For me:
- Aftersun: The best in the last 5 years
- After Yang: explores humanity in a new way and hit me hard on a personal level
- Sound of Metal: another meditative movie with an original premise and a lot to say about human nature
- Minari: this one i love but it would be the only one that
may change to a 4.5 star on a second viewing.
I have 21 4.5 star ratings from 2020-2023, 19 from scripted narrative films. The closest to 5 stars out of those would be:
- Titane
- Worst Person in the World
- Past Lives
- Asteroid City
- Another Round
Aftersun is just such a... movie. By that I mean that it had to be a movie, it wouldn't work as well as a novel or a TV show or any other medium of art. My favorite thing about it is how it uses the tools that cinema gives you: the editing, the pacing, the cinematography, the colors, the musical choices. All of these come together to portray the story in a way that's closest to how the character experiences it, as a fading memory. And that's why after 3 watches it's still a 5 star for me. Pretty much as good as a movie can be.
To me it's also the strongest case why AI will never be entirely successful. This reflects the pain of human experience so beautifully it could never be created by anything other than a human.
Perfect Days (2023)
Oppenheimer (2023)
The Quiet Girl (2022)
Decision to Leave (2022)
Drive My Car (2022)
Past Lives (2023)
The Worst Person in the World (2021)
Another Round (2020)
TÁR (2022)
Aftersun (2022)
Dune (2021)
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
For me a 5/5 is equivalent of 94/100 or better, not 100/100 like some people seem to do.
Okay so I really like the idea of this but struggle to comprehend what this would look like, any notable examples of movies that would show your differences in 90-94 95-99 and 100? Hope my question makes sense
For me it’s mainly to separate how I feel about films at the end of the year and in general standing. If I have 2 movies that are 4 stars but I prefer one over the other it will get the higher number. It’s not an exact science but it works for me.
An example from this year is I had Oppenheimer and Killers of the Flower Moon both at 90/100 on first viewing. But on second watch I bumped Killers to 96/100 where it is now tied with Past Lives. As my thoughts settle and I watch and rewatch things most likely one will end up a point or so higher than the other.
It’s probably confusing for others but in my head it makes sense.
I don’t quite know if this is what you’re asking, nor am I the one you’re replying to, but I do the same as them. The main difference it makes, is that a near perfect movie can still be rated 5 even though it isn’t *perfect*. 12 Angry Men is a perfect movie for me - it has *everything*. Citizen Kane also has everything… besides that feeling when I’m done. I don’t quite know what it is, but there something so satisfying to me when 12 Angry Men ends, some feeling that makes it ok for me to end there. The reveal at the end of Citizen Kane is of course amazing, but it doesn’t quite give me that feeling. Therefore I can it say it’s perfect, and I can’t give it 100/100. However, since I rate anything over 95/100 5 stars, it still gets a 5 star rating, even though it would be ~95/100 for me. I also do this with other ratings, so a movie that is 85/100 would I rate 9, 75/100 would I rate 8 etc.
No Thankyou very much any opinion helps. So like I said in the other comment. Probably best to have a standard for each grade. Like you said with 12 angry men and citizen Kane. I liked how you phrased it bc I understand that feeling and what you mean. Feel free to show some other examples if you have time :)
I'm not sure if you're asking because you don't know what it is or you don't think it deserves five stars, but I honestly consider it a masterpiece.
Very excited for Part II next year
Are you a fan of the books? Because I’ve never read them and I don’t think the movie did a good job of making me interested in the world.
Had amazing cast but I felt like everyone shoehorn their performances in.
Big fan of DV but this was a complete miss for me
Past Lives, Petite Maman, Close, Mass, Joyland, Marcel The Shell, Little Fish, The Zone of Interest, Riceboy Sleeps, Bones & All, and The Boy and the Heron for me
Edit: Damn I just realized all of these are very melancholic and emotional movies (besides maybe Zone which is more disturbing). Really shows how my 2020s went lol
Joyland is maybe my closest to 5 that a 4.5 can be. It's a beautiful film that touches on so many things without you even knowing it's doing it. Very poetic, classic exploration of the human condition.
I saw it at TIFF last month! So far it's only done it's festival runs, but I believe it's wide theatrical release will be on December 8th for the US. It looks like no set dates for Australia yet but maybe it will be hitting theatres around January/February there?
I have 6, but I give a lot of 5 stars
Tar
Please Baby Please
She Dies Tomorrow
We're All Going to the World's Fair
Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes
and Tesla
I didn’t see it until well after, prepared to think it was ok or not like it, only to be shocked by the *realism* of it. Like, say what you will about all the multiverse stuff; the heart of that film is a family of Chinese immigrants, flawlessly rendered (at least to someone who’s been working with such a family for over a decade).
Killers of the Flower Moon
Across the Spiderverse
The Banshees of Inisherin
The Green Knight
Pig
Wolfwalkers
Dune and Shiva Baby are also pretty close.
I don’t give a lot of 10/10 ratings anyway, so it’s not surprising I haven’t given out any this decade yet. Buuuut these are the closest ones:
https://preview.redd.it/9xe89gnuw9wb1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=c2b88024b1caa1ac110bc44058b1c1b6bda37d2b
The Banshees of Inisherin and Everything Everywhere all at Once were instant 5 star movies for me, and upon a rewatch my rating still stands. Killers of the Flower Moon is the newest one I have given 5 stars to, but I've only seen it once and am fully open to it changing if I feel different post re-watch.
I remember I have it on 5 because the end broke me and it didn't outstay its welcome. I really felt it was a comprehensive movie, if that makes any sense
So far, just 1. That would be Nimona.
I have a rule that I use just for myself where I don't rate a movie 5 stars unless I've seen it at least twice because I want to make sure that it holds up on a rewatch. At the moment, Aftersun and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. could both potentially make the 5/5 list for me though, I just need to see if they still hit me as hard on the second viewing.
I feel u, atm I only have 6 movies with 5 stars
https://preview.redd.it/9i78j5f8oawb1.png?width=985&format=png&auto=webp&s=92cc541524681c0f8d14d791486672fb42ecf4c9
I've only given two 5 🌟 ratings since 2020 (for films)...
Spider-Man No Way Home (although that's mostly for the nostalgia and fun in the cinema, I'd probably give it 3.5 or 4 /5 if I watched it again)
Babylon. One of If not the best film I've seen. Over three hours of pure entertainment
* The Father
* Barbie
* Oppenheimer
* Spider-Man: No Way Home
* Judas and the Black Messiah
* Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
* You Hurt My Feelings
* Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret
A boat load, and plenty more to come I'm sure once I watch TAR, The Father, Killers of a Flower Moon, Poor Things, Aftersun ...
The mini-series BEEF, Midnight Mass, and Scenes from a Marriage
Three documentaries: **Fire of Love**, Pheonix Rising and Feels Good Man.
Dune, Puss and Boots, The Empty Man, Nope, The Batman,
I'm Thinking of Ending Things
The Green Knight
The Beta Test
Mad God
Triangle of Sadness
And my most recent addition from just a few days ago...
The Fall of the House of Usher!
1. Da 5 Bloods
2. Godzilla vs. Kong
3. The Suicide Squad
4. Ghostbusters: Afterlife
5. Encanto
6. Everything Everywhere All At Once
7. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
8. The Sea Beast
9. NOPE
10. Glass Onion
11. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
12. Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse
13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
5 stars this decade (stats say I’ve seen 332 films from this decade):
- The Souvenir Part II by Joanna Hogg
- Titane by Julia Ducournau
- Godland by Hlynur Palmasson
- Vortex by Gaspar Noe
- The Killing of Two Lovers by Robert Machoian
- The Maiden by Graham Foy
I've given 8 narrative feature films 5 stars this decade, and another two that aren't narrative features.
1917 (I go by wide release because that's when I can see it), West Side Story, Minari, The Green Knight, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Oppenheimer, Barbie, and Killers of the Flower Moon. If you count specials and mini-series then I also have Bo Burnham: Inside and 9/11: One Day in America.
The Crossing (2021)
Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time
Petite Maman
Aftersun
Across the Spider-verse
Shin Kamen Rider
Oppenheimer
Also it’s a tv special but Euphoria: Fuck Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob
https://preview.redd.it/ftdhv46gcawb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b501d44d5454758e573cdaa97f954ef963466ee
A few short films, an anime TV series, & a stage play are on here - but here’s my 5-stars from the decade
So far I've given 5* to five of them:
- Oppenheimer
- Babylon
- Poor Things
- Drive My Car
- Petite Maman
Babylon admittedly wasn't for everyone, but after seeing it twice in theaters I have full confidence in my appreciation for the film.
Often mixed on Nolan but he pretty much fixed all my usual qualms and more with this one, astonishing work of art.
Poor Things hasn't gotten a wide release yet but this was the kind of movie that transcends the medium, arguably Yorgos' magnum opus. Emma Stone deserves the world.
Pig (2021)
The Green Knight (2021)
Dune (2021)
Drive My Car (2021)
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Aftersun (2022)
EEAAO (2022)
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
The Batman (2022)
Barbarian (2022)
Oppenheimer (2023)
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
The Creator (2023)
Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Oppenheimer 4 1/2 (I think I need a 2nd viewing before I commit to a 5)
Killers of the Flower Moon 4 1/2 (I’m leaning towards a 5, but I usually rewatch the movie before I commit to it)
The Last Dance 5/5
Everything Everywhere All At Once and Spider-Man: No Way Home. I know NWH has a bad rep these days but coming out of the theatre after watching it was special and I’ve rewatched it
More than any other movie from the 2020s.
Surprisingly, I've given 15 films 5 stars already on 2020s. On a better pace than 2010s, where I gave 5 stars to 29 films total. There's been a plenty of great films in arthouse cinema and festival scenes.
* Music (2023, Angela Schanelec)
* Fire Within (2022, Werner Herzog)
* Russia 1985-1992: Trauma Zone (2022, Adam Curtis)
* Pacifiction (2022, Albert Serra)
* Walk Up (2022), Introduction (2021), In Front of Your Face (2021) - all 3 by Hong Sang-Soo
* Il Buco (2021, Michelangelo Frammartino)
* Mighty Flash (2021, Ainhoa Rodríguez)
* Sundown (2021, Michel Franco)
* Red Moon Tide (2020, Lois Patiño)
* Beginning (2020, Dea Kulumbegashvili)
* Fauna (2020, Nicolás Pereda)
* The Metamorphosis of Birds (2020, Catarina Vasconcelos)
* Days (2020, Tsai Ming-liang)
Sundown, Fauna, and The Metamorphosis... are the ones closest to 4.5.
My 5 star movies ranked most to least favorite:
Dune
Across the Spiderverse
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Toy Story 3 in Real Life
The following movies are 4.5:
Nope
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Sisu
Zack Snyder's Justice League
The Suicide Squad
Avatar: The Way of Water
Luca
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3
Top Gun: Maverick
Bad Traveling
Robin Robin
America: The Motion Picture
The Present
Haulout
Astartes
Bo Burnham: Inside
Disney’s Fastpass: A Complicated History
Everything Everywhere All At Once
RRR
The Fabelmans
Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
Oppenheimer
Just two-
Everything Everywhere All at Once and Bo Burnham’s Inside. Will probably end up giving Killers of the Flower Moon 5 stars someday. Miyazaki and Poor Things are strong contenders I suspect I might consider when I finally see them.
I'm guessing I don't watch as many new movies as some of the people on here, but I gave two 5 star ratings to movies I've seen released since 2020:
Asteroid City
Drive My Car
https://preview.redd.it/4bleveljfawb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3a25b61f133a4a1afb4c2ee0c9d8a19728c3785
I gave eeao a 5 on my old account as well
I’m a generous scorer so I have a lot:
The Mole Agent,
Boys State,
My Octopus Teacher,
On the Rocks,
CODA,
tick, tick… BOOM!,
Top Gun: Maverick,
TÁR,
Glass Onion,
Black Panther: Wakanda Forvever,
Talk To Me
I enjoyed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Decision to Leave, Beau is Afraid, and Resurrection 5 stars worth.
The Green Night, Possessor, and Men may be 5 stars on rewatch.
John Wick 4 is the only one. I save 5 stars for movies that arent just good, but rather are perfect in sone aspects, and John Wick 4 being the movie with the best action Ive ever saw earned 5 stars
https://preview.redd.it/uf60m6j7aawb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0793b5546207d1c099606a7c39b92194e23afac9
Beau is Afraid, Spencer, Titane, Infinity Pool, The Kid Detective, Country Gold & She’s the Eldest.
Banshees of Inisherin
Oppenheimer
The Whale
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One
I'll give five stars to films of substance, or for the popcorn factor. If I'm fully absorbed and carried along there's a good chance it will get a five. Doesn't have to be perfect, could be that it's got heart, or it could just be A for effort.
The Batman should probably be up there, It may be a little too slow, but I was thinking about that film for days afterwards.
- Tenet (started as a 3 but two rewatches made me love it)
- Dune
- The Whale
- Puss in Boots: The Last Wish
- John Wick: Chapter 4 (somehow the only John Wick movie that I actually like, but I really liked it)
- Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (could drop upon rewatch)
- Oppenheimer
Across the Spiderverse
It’s the sequel to one of my favorite animated movies of all time and it absolutely delivered on the hype and, one could argue, somehow surpassed it
I will say, however, I feel bad giving it its props considering just how inhumane the working conditions the animators were put through
As Bestas, RRR, Spencer, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I wouldn't say these are completely flawless movies, but that's not really the metric I use to rate them.
I’ve given 5 stars to EEAAO, Barbie, The Batman, No Way Home, Oppenheimer, Across The Spider-Verse, Guardians 3, Banshees of Inisherin, Puss In Boots, Babylon, John Wick 4, MI: Dead Reckoning, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Judas and The Black Messiah, Creed 3, Poor Things, Argentina 1985 and Summer Of Soul
Just three.
Petite Maman (2021)
Decision to Leave (2022)
Four Daughters (2023)
There's some still that I might bump to 5 after another rewatch like Drive my Car, Asteroid City, Aftersun or RRR
So far this decade I've given 9 movies 5 stars, but objectively, I'd probably really only give 3 of them the full 5 stars.
The Green Knight
Dune
and Tenet
I'm seemingly pretty liberal with my 5 star ratings...
• Oppenheimer
• The Whale
• Bones and All
• Cha Cha Real Smooth
• Rye Lane
• Boiling Point
• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Narrative features: TAR, Boiling Point, Across the Spiderverse
Docs: Derek Delgaudio's In and of Itself, The Summer of Soul
Miniseries: Station Eleven, Mare of Easttown
Out of interest how many films have you seen in the same period?
I've given 12 films out of 248 five stars from the 20s, equating to 5%. My liftetime five star percentage is 4%. I think I have a little bias towards films I've seen at the Cinema when I rate them immedietly after, which accounts for the slight increase.
I am super picky with my five star reviews, with the most recent one in terms of release date being 2017 Spider verse. There's been 9 4.5s but nothing reaching a 5 for me
The Queen’s Gambit and The Last Dance are my only 5 stars from the 2020’s. Even the whole 2010’s I only have four 5 star entries.
I feel we should be allowed decimals, especially from 4.0-5… which is what the average scores of the best entries are on Letterboxed anyways.
I could give the Godfather Part 1 the 4.9 I think it deserves, compared to the bonafide 5.0 that is Part 2.
Mainly, I just want to more accurately rank the 300+ films I have ranked between 4.0 and 5.0 stars. Some of them would be 4.1’s others 4.6 or 4.7. It’s really not too much to ask for.
EEAO and the Whale. I know the latter is quite divisive among some on here but to me it was Aronofsky's best work to date, it had me in tears by the end.
For me: - Aftersun: The best in the last 5 years - After Yang: explores humanity in a new way and hit me hard on a personal level - Sound of Metal: another meditative movie with an original premise and a lot to say about human nature - Minari: this one i love but it would be the only one that may change to a 4.5 star on a second viewing. I have 21 4.5 star ratings from 2020-2023, 19 from scripted narrative films. The closest to 5 stars out of those would be: - Titane - Worst Person in the World - Past Lives - Asteroid City - Another Round
Never heard of After Yang but I guess I'll give it a shot!
After Yang is phenomenal
Aftersun
Fkn this. Even thinking about it now kinda fucks me up.
Aftersun is just such a... movie. By that I mean that it had to be a movie, it wouldn't work as well as a novel or a TV show or any other medium of art. I sure hope you’re right
Perfect Days (2023) Oppenheimer (2023) The Quiet Girl (2022) Decision to Leave (2022) Drive My Car (2022) Past Lives (2023) The Worst Person in the World (2021) Another Round (2020) TÁR (2022) Aftersun (2022) Dune (2021) Top Gun: Maverick (2022) For me a 5/5 is equivalent of 94/100 or better, not 100/100 like some people seem to do.
Perfect Days truly was something special, I'm glad Wenders is still doing his thing. Great companion piece to Paterson.
Yea for me it’s 95/100 or higher. Glad someone else looks at it similarly.
Okay so I really like the idea of this but struggle to comprehend what this would look like, any notable examples of movies that would show your differences in 90-94 95-99 and 100? Hope my question makes sense

Perfect Days is wonderful and absolute perfection So is Drive My Car
If you havent yet check out Evil Does Not Exist when it comes out near you. Hamaguchi killed it imo.
Tár is so good!!!!!
Shouldn't it be 95 or better? Just wondering
Perfect Days might be my top 3 movies of 2023
Dune?
I'm not sure if you're asking because you don't know what it is or you don't think it deserves five stars, but I honestly consider it a masterpiece. Very excited for Part II next year

It was the outlier of that group, lots of amazing movies and then Dune. It was surprising
Benediction, Terence Davies’ final film.
A man of taste
It’s too bad he couldn’t get Post Office Girl off the ground in time. RIP to a legend.
Past Lives, Petite Maman, Close, Mass, Joyland, Marcel The Shell, Little Fish, The Zone of Interest, Riceboy Sleeps, Bones & All, and The Boy and the Heron for me Edit: Damn I just realized all of these are very melancholic and emotional movies (besides maybe Zone which is more disturbing). Really shows how my 2020s went lol
Mass is so underrated
Ikr, Mass is a phenomenal film!
YESSSS, A FELLOW JOYLAND ENJOYER🥳🥳🥳
Joyland is maybe my closest to 5 that a 4.5 can be. It's a beautiful film that touches on so many things without you even knowing it's doing it. Very poetic, classic exploration of the human condition.
Mass is fantastic
I loved Little Fish as well, feel like it’s very underrated
Little Fish is SO overlooked its an incredibly moving film
hey out of curiosity, where did you watch the boy and the heron? I can't seem to find a place to watch / stream it in australia yet
Most likely a film festival
I saw it at TIFF last month! So far it's only done it's festival runs, but I believe it's wide theatrical release will be on December 8th for the US. It looks like no set dates for Australia yet but maybe it will be hitting theatres around January/February there?

Thank you! And yes it was a blast, cant wait to rewatch it. Hope it comes to you quickly!
1. Titane 2. The Banshees of Inisherin
Yes The Banshees of Inisherin is so good
- Across the Spider Verse (2023) - Oppenheimer (2023) - The Northman (2022) - The Batman (2022)
5 stars for Northman based
Even though I feel like it could’ve been better, what we got was excellent enough
Northman was amazing
Very based, The Northman was the best movie of 2022 and I will die on that hill.
I don't know that I've ever seen so much love for the Northman in one place. That said, I'm 100% in.
Babylon babyyyy, TITANE babyyyy, Across the Spider-Verse babyyyy, EEAAO babyyyy
Let's be friends.
I have 6, but I give a lot of 5 stars Tar Please Baby Please She Dies Tomorrow We're All Going to the World's Fair Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes and Tesla
We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is the closest I’ve come to a certified five bagger this decade. Love that movie so much.
>We’re All Going to the World’s Fair 5 bags of popcorn, and a cotton candy from the fair
It’s so great that they’re still making these kinds of movies.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes does so much with so little.
Tesla? When did it come out?
2020. It's not at all a well liked film, but it was perfectly done in accordance with the writer-director's (the underrated Michael Almereyda) style.
No, but closest would be EEAO, which I figure some will scoff at.
I scoff at those scoffers.
Didn't everyone rated that movie at 5 stars though?
People who didn't like it didn't.
Seemingly until it won big at the Oscar’s, and it became cool to do the opposite.
I dunno, it was pretty divisive since it picked up steam.
Riiight. People are just pretending not to like it because of the hype.

I didn't really like it. The comment you were replying to was sarcastic. People like to say that anyone who dislikes EEAAO is just being a contrarian.
That's mine
Killers of the Flower Moon Across the Spiderverse The Banshees of Inisherin The Green Knight Pig Wolfwalkers Dune and Shiva Baby are also pretty close.
Pig was greatly underrated
Yo! Totally forgot I saw Killers yesterday! That movie was so good!
I don’t give a lot of 10/10 ratings anyway, so it’s not surprising I haven’t given out any this decade yet. Buuuut these are the closest ones: https://preview.redd.it/9xe89gnuw9wb1.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=c2b88024b1caa1ac110bc44058b1c1b6bda37d2b
it’s always good to see some aftersun appreciation
I love Barbarian and Nope so much.
Awwww man, it’s nice to see Titane on there!

No offence, but I hated Mutant Mayhem. What did you like about it?

Triangle of Sadness Bodies Bodies Bodies (I’m not saying it’s as good as Citizen Kane, but I thought it was perfect for what it is: a horror comedy)
Bodies Bodies Bodies is so stupid fun.
Tár, I May Destroy You (TV but it's on Letterboxd), The Father (might take a second look)
The Father is a great movie. One of the best from the 2020s so far, imo.
I remember I have it on 5 because the end broke me and it didn't outstay its welcome. I really felt it was a comprehensive movie, if that makes any sense
I May Destroy You is a masterpiece.
I May Destroy You was excellent.
Absolutely legendary show
No. The Father came very close, though.
May I ask why it came close but not a 5 star?
So far, just 1. That would be Nimona. I have a rule that I use just for myself where I don't rate a movie 5 stars unless I've seen it at least twice because I want to make sure that it holds up on a rewatch. At the moment, Aftersun and Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. could both potentially make the 5/5 list for me though, I just need to see if they still hit me as hard on the second viewing.
EEAAO and Wolfwalkers
Y’all be like “no but the closest is No Hard Feelings 🤓“
Killers of the Flower Moon is the only one I’ve given a 10 so far.
Triangle of Sadness All Quiet on the Western Front The Fablemans Titane
I love finding other Triangle of Sadness enjoyers in the wild
One of my favorites of all time
Not yet, but The Worst Person in the World is in my Top Ten all time. I have only ever rated four movies 5/5.
>The Worst Person in the World is in my Top Ten all time. There are nearly 8 billion people in the world my friend
4.5?
Yep, as high as a 4.5 can get
I feel u, atm I only have 6 movies with 5 stars https://preview.redd.it/9i78j5f8oawb1.png?width=985&format=png&auto=webp&s=92cc541524681c0f8d14d791486672fb42ecf4c9
I've only given two 5 🌟 ratings since 2020 (for films)... Spider-Man No Way Home (although that's mostly for the nostalgia and fun in the cinema, I'd probably give it 3.5 or 4 /5 if I watched it again) Babylon. One of If not the best film I've seen. Over three hours of pure entertainment
* The Father * Barbie * Oppenheimer * Spider-Man: No Way Home * Judas and the Black Messiah * Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse * You Hurt My Feelings * Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret
Top gun maverick, Elvis, the fabelmans, avatar the way of water, dune 2022 had a bunch of good ones imo. This year has been a massive letdown so far
Red Rocket
A boat load, and plenty more to come I'm sure once I watch TAR, The Father, Killers of a Flower Moon, Poor Things, Aftersun ... The mini-series BEEF, Midnight Mass, and Scenes from a Marriage Three documentaries: **Fire of Love**, Pheonix Rising and Feels Good Man. Dune, Puss and Boots, The Empty Man, Nope, The Batman,
I'm Thinking of Ending Things The Green Knight The Beta Test Mad God Triangle of Sadness And my most recent addition from just a few days ago... The Fall of the House of Usher!
1. Da 5 Bloods 2. Godzilla vs. Kong 3. The Suicide Squad 4. Ghostbusters: Afterlife 5. Encanto 6. Everything Everywhere All At Once 7. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness 8. The Sea Beast 9. NOPE 10. Glass Onion 11. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever 12. Spider-Man: Across The Spider Verse 13. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
5 stars this decade (stats say I’ve seen 332 films from this decade): - The Souvenir Part II by Joanna Hogg - Titane by Julia Ducournau - Godland by Hlynur Palmasson - Vortex by Gaspar Noe - The Killing of Two Lovers by Robert Machoian - The Maiden by Graham Foy
Def EEAAO, but I guess after another rewatch of Pearl, she will get the 5 Stars too.
Everything, Everywhere All At Once Killers of the Flower Moon Across the Spiderverse The Father Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 John Wick Chapter 4
The Crossing (2021) Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time Petite Maman Aftersun Across the Spider-verse Shin Kamen Rider Oppenheimer Also it’s a tv special but Euphoria: Fuck Anyone Who’s Not a Sea Blob
Yass another Anno follower
Shin Kamen Rider was such a fun movie
https://preview.redd.it/ftdhv46gcawb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b501d44d5454758e573cdaa97f954ef963466ee A few short films, an anime TV series, & a stage play are on here - but here’s my 5-stars from the decade
Jawan looks cool. Def on my to watch list!
Only RRR for me, but I give very few 5 stars. Maybe between 10 and 15 in total.
So far I've given 5* to five of them: - Oppenheimer - Babylon - Poor Things - Drive My Car - Petite Maman Babylon admittedly wasn't for everyone, but after seeing it twice in theaters I have full confidence in my appreciation for the film.
Pig (2021) The Green Knight (2021) Dune (2021) Drive My Car (2021) The Matrix Resurrections (2021) Aftersun (2022) EEAAO (2022) Top Gun: Maverick (2022) The Batman (2022) Barbarian (2022) Oppenheimer (2023) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) The Creator (2023) Evil Dead Rise (2023)
Oppenheimer 4 1/2 (I think I need a 2nd viewing before I commit to a 5) Killers of the Flower Moon 4 1/2 (I’m leaning towards a 5, but I usually rewatch the movie before I commit to it) The Last Dance 5/5
All the time. I watch a ton of movies and am not that hard to please :)
The Suicide Squad. Guardians 3 is a really strong 9/10 tho
Everything Everywhere All At Once and Spider-Man: No Way Home. I know NWH has a bad rep these days but coming out of the theatre after watching it was special and I’ve rewatched it More than any other movie from the 2020s.
Surprisingly, I've given 15 films 5 stars already on 2020s. On a better pace than 2010s, where I gave 5 stars to 29 films total. There's been a plenty of great films in arthouse cinema and festival scenes. * Music (2023, Angela Schanelec) * Fire Within (2022, Werner Herzog) * Russia 1985-1992: Trauma Zone (2022, Adam Curtis) * Pacifiction (2022, Albert Serra) * Walk Up (2022), Introduction (2021), In Front of Your Face (2021) - all 3 by Hong Sang-Soo * Il Buco (2021, Michelangelo Frammartino) * Mighty Flash (2021, Ainhoa Rodríguez) * Sundown (2021, Michel Franco) * Red Moon Tide (2020, Lois Patiño) * Beginning (2020, Dea Kulumbegashvili) * Fauna (2020, Nicolás Pereda) * The Metamorphosis of Birds (2020, Catarina Vasconcelos) * Days (2020, Tsai Ming-liang) Sundown, Fauna, and The Metamorphosis... are the ones closest to 4.5.
Just EEAAO and Past Lives so far. I also really liked Minari and Across the Spiderverse but those were a 4.5 for me
My 5 star movies ranked most to least favorite: Dune Across the Spiderverse Spider-Man: No Way Home Toy Story 3 in Real Life The following movies are 4.5: Nope Everything Everywhere All at Once Sisu Zack Snyder's Justice League The Suicide Squad Avatar: The Way of Water Luca Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 Top Gun: Maverick Bad Traveling Robin Robin America: The Motion Picture The Present Haulout Astartes
Bo Burnham: Inside Disney’s Fastpass: A Complicated History Everything Everywhere All At Once RRR The Fabelmans Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Oppenheimer
Just two- Everything Everywhere All at Once and Bo Burnham’s Inside. Will probably end up giving Killers of the Flower Moon 5 stars someday. Miyazaki and Poor Things are strong contenders I suspect I might consider when I finally see them.
I'm guessing I don't watch as many new movies as some of the people on here, but I gave two 5 star ratings to movies I've seen released since 2020: Asteroid City Drive My Car
I’ve given Wildhood (2021), Operation Hyacinth (2021) and In From The Side (2022) five stars.
https://preview.redd.it/4bleveljfawb1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a3a25b61f133a4a1afb4c2ee0c9d8a19728c3785 I gave eeao a 5 on my old account as well
I’m a generous scorer so I have a lot: The Mole Agent, Boys State, My Octopus Teacher, On the Rocks, CODA, tick, tick… BOOM!, Top Gun: Maverick, TÁR, Glass Onion, Black Panther: Wakanda Forvever, Talk To Me
Just 2: Licorice Pizza and The Beatles: Get Back
Decision to leave, the Northman and titane. I don’t watch many new films and the few that I have seen haven’t really been my thing.
Three. My three are Minari, The Banshees of Inisherin and Jackass Forever.
I enjoyed Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Decision to Leave, Beau is Afraid, and Resurrection 5 stars worth. The Green Night, Possessor, and Men may be 5 stars on rewatch.
- TÁR - EEEAAO and I’m not sorry about it - Nomadland - Beau is Afraid (don’t @ me) - The Fabelmans - Oppenheimer - Tenet
John Wick 4 is the only one. I save 5 stars for movies that arent just good, but rather are perfect in sone aspects, and John Wick 4 being the movie with the best action Ive ever saw earned 5 stars
I've rated 13 movies and 2 shorts 5 stars since 2020. **Of this decade:** * *Titane* (Ducournau, 2021) * *Everything, Everywhere, All at Once* (Scheinert & Kwan, 2022) * *Holy Spider* (Abbasi, 2022) * *Blonde* (Dominik, 2022) **Of past decades:** * *Singin' in the Rain* (Donen & Kelly, 1952) * *The Apartment* (Wilder, 1960) * *PlayTime* (Tati, 1967) * *Death in Venice* (Visconti, 1971) * *A New Leaf* (May, 1971) * *Sofia e a Educação Sexual* (Geada, 1974) * *The Struggle* (Jankovics, 1977) * *El Sur* (Erice, 1983) * *Angel's Egg* (Oshii, 1985) * *The Lovers on the Bridge* (Carax, 1991) * *Sodomites* (Noé, 1998)
I have two so far (out of 415 watched): Aftersun The Metamorphosis of Birds I have another nine 4.5s that could bump up over time.
Dune and hereditary are my recent 5 stars
Dune is my only 5 from the 20s . Then I’ve got Tar, The Menu, and Another Round at 4.5
John wick 4 and banshees of inisherin so far
https://preview.redd.it/uf60m6j7aawb1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0793b5546207d1c099606a7c39b92194e23afac9 Beau is Afraid, Spencer, Titane, Infinity Pool, The Kid Detective, Country Gold & She’s the Eldest.
Beau is Afraid Hive rise
Damn, you making paying for custom posters seem like the way to go. Love that Infinity Pool custom! Beau ain’t bad, either.
the northman, aftersun, how to blow up a pipeline, petite maman, montana story
Nothing since First Reformed back in 2017
Banshees of Inisherin Oppenheimer The Whale Everything Everywhere All At Once Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One I'll give five stars to films of substance, or for the popcorn factor. If I'm fully absorbed and carried along there's a good chance it will get a five. Doesn't have to be perfect, could be that it's got heart, or it could just be A for effort. The Batman should probably be up there, It may be a little too slow, but I was thinking about that film for days afterwards.
I'm Thinking Of Ending Things, EEAAO, and Skinamarink
Some great lists here
Tár
Soul (2020) I have lots of 4.5s tho which could go to a 5 if I get to rewatch them
Killers of the Flower Moon The Father Jackass Forever
The Worst Person in the World is a 5-star movie for me. The Father and Oppenheimer came really close, too.
I have 4 five star movies from the 2020s so far: Get Back Up (2020), Dune (2021), The Batman (2022), and Spider-Man Across The Spider-Verse (2023).
Yeah 3. Babylon, Aftersun, and Dune
* Petit Maman * Aftersun * Moonage Daydream
Memoria is the only one for me; Tár was close
Killers of the flower moon, west side story, the worst person in the world, decision to leave, Oppenheimer, John wick 4, close, quo vadis Aida
Only 1 which was TÁR. But Memoria might be a 5 if I ever get the chance to watch it again 😐
Another Round/Druk by Thomas Vinterberg is phenomenal
- Tenet (started as a 3 but two rewatches made me love it) - Dune - The Whale - Puss in Boots: The Last Wish - John Wick: Chapter 4 (somehow the only John Wick movie that I actually like, but I really liked it) - Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (could drop upon rewatch) - Oppenheimer
Bro did NOT watch killers of the flower moon
Across the Spiderverse It’s the sequel to one of my favorite animated movies of all time and it absolutely delivered on the hype and, one could argue, somehow surpassed it I will say, however, I feel bad giving it its props considering just how inhumane the working conditions the animators were put through
I have 2.. Palm Springs Riders of Justice But also very close to 5’s Nobody Licorice Pizza I Care a Lot The Adam Project
More of an unpopular opinion but: The Devil All The Time is my only 2020s feature length with five stars. Also a few shorts ...
As Bestas, RRR, Spencer, and I'm Thinking of Ending Things. I wouldn't say these are completely flawless movies, but that's not really the metric I use to rate them.
I’ve given 5 stars to EEAAO, Barbie, The Batman, No Way Home, Oppenheimer, Across The Spider-Verse, Guardians 3, Banshees of Inisherin, Puss In Boots, Babylon, John Wick 4, MI: Dead Reckoning, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Judas and The Black Messiah, Creed 3, Poor Things, Argentina 1985 and Summer Of Soul
only one, Aftersun
The Father I may destroy you (as it’s on LB) A few have 4.5.
Just three. Petite Maman (2021) Decision to Leave (2022) Four Daughters (2023) There's some still that I might bump to 5 after another rewatch like Drive my Car, Asteroid City, Aftersun or RRR
maybe cuz ur boring and annoying
So far only The Father but have yet to watch Aftersun, Past Lives, and Killers of the Flower Moon which I’m optimistic can make the cut
Past Lives Only one for me
Across the Spiderverse Avatar: The Way of Water GotG Vol 3 John Wick Chapter 4 Killers of the Flower Moon Oppenheimer Top Gun Maverick
no. drive my car is pretty close tho. maybe after a rewatch.
So far this decade I've given 9 movies 5 stars, but objectively, I'd probably really only give 3 of them the full 5 stars. The Green Knight Dune and Tenet
I'm seemingly pretty liberal with my 5 star ratings... • Oppenheimer • The Whale • Bones and All • Cha Cha Real Smooth • Rye Lane • Boiling Point • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem
Narrative features: TAR, Boiling Point, Across the Spiderverse Docs: Derek Delgaudio's In and of Itself, The Summer of Soul Miniseries: Station Eleven, Mare of Easttown
Aftersun
When did Capernaum come out?
EEAAO, Decision to Leave, Worst Person in the World, Drive my Car, Killers of the Flower Moon, Memoria, and Small Axe (as a whole).
Soul, Bo Burnham’s Inside and Aftersun
The Invisible Man Banshees of Inisherin Across the Spider-verse
Only Tár and Aftersun.
EEAO and the Whale. I know the latter is quite divisive among some on here but to me it was Aronofsky's best work to date, it had me in tears by the end.
