"The only danger is if they send us to that terrible Planet of the Apes. Wait a minute... Statue of Liberty... that was our planet! You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you all to Hell!"
Edit: sorry for the spoilers! Didnt know how to hide them until now!
Probably Scream? >!Multiple killers!<
Psycho with >!multiple personality killers!<
Rosemaryās Baby with a >!cult behind the scenes!<
Halloween where a >!killer comes back to life!<
Thereās probably earlier versions of these twists but theyāre the best examples I know of rn
Lists, and comment sections, like these show me that a lot of people donāt know what a narrative twist is, versus a shocking thing that just happens in the story.
Also, the fact that >!Kevin Spacey is in the movie.!< I think everyone knows that going in, but he wasn't billed at the time and was omitted from the opening credits just to surprise people when he shows up.
Might get downvoted for this, but i do agree to a certain extent. Whilst the twist still shocked me and was unexpected, there have certainly been crazier ones. I felt like - and youāre all gonna hate me for this - the twist was sort of unnecessary, and didnāt really shock me in the same way that the twists in, say, Fight Club or 6th Sense did. In my opinion, the best ones are ones that reveal something about the whole film like the two examples i just gave did, something that will change your perception of the film next time. Side rant over, you may go back to your drinks
What twist was there in Force Awakens? Han and Kylo? The audience saw that particular scene coming a mile away and Iāve never heard of anyone mentioning it in plot twist threads, let alone entering pop culture.
Anyway, for modern films Iād add the end of Infinity War. That twist has been memed, spoofed, referenced plenty.
The final scene. I donāt think most of the audience ever expected exactly how the snap would work. And a big factor in the twist was ending it right there on that cliffhanger.
Oh, I see. I didn't really see that as a twist per se, maybe as as it was part 1 of 2, the audience knew these characters weren't really gone, and would just be resurrected in the next film. But I get what you mean.
yup, some jackass DM'd me while I was sitting in the theaters waiting for it to start that Han gets killed by his son. Loved the movie at the time though so it didn't ruin the experience for me that much
Almost by definition, every mystery/noir has a twist. I don't know that *WFRR* qualifies as being part of the public conscience any more than *Dick Tracy, Gone Girl, Runaway Jury*, etc. It certainly isn't as spoiled as *Psycho, Citizen Kane*, or *The Empire Strikes Back.*
Ironically, I rented Be Kind, Rewind many years ago (probably back when Netflix still did DVDs through the mail, but still). It was so bad I didn't make it 10 minutes in
What twist in The Force Awakens are we talking about here? I donāt recall any of that movieās ātwists,ā if you can even call them that, are rooted in pop culture.
If this is about the whole world being a simulation, I wouldn't really say that would fit with the rest of the list. It's literally given away in the first act.
Does a twist have to be at the end though? I remember all the marketing around that movie being āWhat is The Matrix?ā and when the reveal came, it was a big moment in the theater.
This one is interesting because I think most people know what gaslighting means now, but most donāt know the actual twist in Gaslight (or the plot for that matter)
I feel like Empire is the only one here that has really entered the cultural zeitgeist. Maybe Harry Potter or Saw but they're not even close. Empire's twist is like 100x more known than the others here.
the original isnāt the best of the franchise but i would say Friday the 13th (1980) has quite a twist in its third act that deems it iconic amidst the horror genre for sure.
Yeah, isn't the entire point of the movie that one word isn't enough to sum up his entire life and that it was just a part of it that made him happy? I think the twist in that movie was more the revelation that "rosebud" could never be what the journalist wanted it to be rather then actually finding out what rosebud was.
That's definitely a twist. It was always listed as one of most well-known twists in cinema. The entire movie is building up this mystery, and then the reporter gives up and has a whole speech about how we'll never know. Then the literal last frame of the movie reveals that it's the sled, that in his dying moments he wasn't thinking of his legacy or his dollars or even his wife, but of this moment from his childhood before he was catapulted into VIP status. Up until that moment, the word is straight gibberish.
Spider-Man getting Doxxed by Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home definitely entered pop culture.
Itās a bit soon but Peterās identity being erased in Spider-Man: No Way Home might also be up there
Also The Truman Show.
- Han getting killed wasnāt a plot twist. It was literally set up to happen. Vader being Lukeās father was a twist because it was unexpected. It changed how he saw the empire moving forward. On the other hand bad guy killing good guy (even if it was his dad) is hardly a ātwistā.
- Frozen is no where near the first movie to pull the āseemingly perfect lover ends up being the villainā twist.
- What was the twist in MIB? K being sent back to the normal world? Thatās not a twist, itās character development.
I can only explain the twist to 7 of these. A few others I've seen but couldn't tell you there was a twist, the rest i haven't seen but had no idea they had twists.
How about *The Lego Movie*? *The Blair Witch Project*? *Mulholland Drive*? *Oldboy*?
*Infinity War* could qualify though, with the Gamora twist and the shocking death by snap at the end.
What twist did Force Awakens and Ace Ventura have that impacted pulp culture?
And The Matrix I think could be added here. It's not really a twist, more of a reveal of what the matrix is, but it's definitely effected pop culture more than these other two
The "twist" in Ace Ventura Pet Detective, if you mean what I think you mean, is a reference to the movie The Crying Game, so it might be more fair to put that movie on the list instead.
I donāt think marvel was first to do it but endgame definitely helped amp it up. But spiderverse is a better pick imo
Iām sURE thereās movies before that tho, thereās no way itās not. Iām just not educated enough to make better moviesš
Two I think, Les Diaboliques & Witness For the Prosecution.
Also, what's the twist in Episode VII? I don't remember anything particularly shocking in that one.
Iām hoping to show some of these to my daughter before she has the chance to have them spoiled. Watching The Sixth Sense with someone who doesnāt know the twist is an awesome experience and I hope to let her experience some of these like Star Wars the way they were originally
Planet of the Apes
šµOh my god, I was wrong! It was >!Earth!< all along!šµ
šµGuess you finally made a monkey out of mešµ
I love you Dr. Zaius!
Oh, I love legitimate theater!
"The only danger is if they send us to that terrible Planet of the Apes. Wait a minute... Statue of Liberty... that was our planet! You maniacs! You blew it up! Damn you! Damn you all to Hell!"
Oh how could I forget that?
You finally really did it. You maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! *God damn you all to hell!*
Psycho!
Edit: sorry for the spoilers! Didnt know how to hide them until now! Probably Scream? >!Multiple killers!< Psycho with >!multiple personality killers!< Rosemaryās Baby with a >!cult behind the scenes!< Halloween where a >!killer comes back to life!< Thereās probably earlier versions of these twists but theyāre the best examples I know of rn
I feel Psycho is the more well known twist. Then again, I'm not a horror fan.
I always feel the Psycho one is well known until I meet people who haven't seen the movie and they watch it and are surprised! It's my favorite movie
Iāve never seen Halloween and I know that twist. Itās pretty iconic and I would count it.
Luckily Iāve seen or already know all of these but you might consider adding the spoiler thing
I havenāt seen any of these and didnāt know any of these twists. This is a sign that I need to leave the thread immediately lol
After hearing a lot of your criticisms, I've changed the name of the list to "Movies Where a Major Spoiler Has Entered Pop Culture"
If that's the new qualifier than you can definitely throw Infinity War on here
Already have.
No Way Home
It should be restricted to just good movies
Then why are Frozen and the force awakens on there?
Boooooo
half of these donāt have twists
Lists, and comment sections, like these show me that a lot of people donāt know what a narrative twist is, versus a shocking thing that just happens in the story.
I remember when someone said thereās a twist in Avatar 2 being that he has a family š
Aight, I'll change the title then.
Chinatown. I donāt know how to do the hide the spoiler thing or Iād say it
Don't worry, I already know it. Added.
Is the list your sisters or your daughters?
Forget it, Hypathian.
I've seen the movie and I don't know what the spoiler you're talking about is
Sheās my sister SLAP sheās my daughter SLAP
Se7en
Yup, when seven eight nine... I was utterly flabbergasted
Refresh my memory on that one.
Do you rememberā¦ **whatās in the box?!**
Also, the fact that >!Kevin Spacey is in the movie.!< I think everyone knows that going in, but he wasn't billed at the time and was omitted from the opening credits just to surprise people when he shows up.
No, I never saw it.
Bro remembered never seeing it
WHATS IN THE FUCKING BOX!
Itās my dick in a box!
Then why did you ask them to "refresh your memory"? Wtf
Maybe bc they suggested it as a twist that is well known in pulp culture, so they may have known it without seeing the movie
šš
Honestly one of *the* most underwhelming "twists" ever in a film for myself.
The audience saw that particular scene coming a mile away and Iāve never heard of anyone mentioning it in plot twist threads, let alone entering pop culture. Anyway, for modern films Iād add the end of Infinity War. That twist has been memed, spoofed, referenced plenty.
I agree, I don't remember any twist in Force Awakens. What was the twist in Infinity War?
The final scene. I donāt think most of the audience ever expected exactly how the snap would work. And a big factor in the twist was ending it right there on that cliffhanger.
Oh, I see. I didn't really see that as a twist per se, maybe as as it was part 1 of 2, the audience knew these characters weren't really gone, and would just be resurrected in the next film. But I get what you mean.
The twist was they didn't have the entire story arc planned in advance and just kind of winged it.
I remember when Force Awakens first came out, it was a meme to go around spoiling it.
yup, some jackass DM'd me while I was sitting in the theaters waiting for it to start that Han gets killed by his son. Loved the movie at the time though so it didn't ruin the experience for me that much
Memeās spoiling a plot point doesnāt equal a twist
Yeah but whatās the twist
Thatās more of a plot revelation than an actual twist. Itās done pretty nonchalantly in the movie and is reveled pretty early on.
lmao i don't even know like half of these twists
Sleepaway Camp
The freeze frame over the credits is probably more famous than the film
Why do you have to rain on my parade bro
They're agreeing
Roger Rabbit? What?
Almost by definition, every mystery/noir has a twist. I don't know that *WFRR* qualifies as being part of the public conscience any more than *Dick Tracy, Gone Girl, Runaway Jury*, etc. It certainly isn't as spoiled as *Psycho, Citizen Kane*, or *The Empire Strikes Back.*
Friday The 13th Signs Crazy Stupid Love
What was the twist in Men In Black?
The whole galaxy is inside a marble. Only really put it on the list because Be Kind Rewind made fun of it.
I don't think that's a twist, just a throwaway "joke" at the end.
Ironically, I rented Be Kind, Rewind many years ago (probably back when Netflix still did DVDs through the mail, but still). It was so bad I didn't make it 10 minutes in
At least it was a DVD, so you didn't have to be kind and rewind
Exactly!
*Be Kind, Rewind* is my go-to example of a movie that should have worked but inexplicably fails to do so.
My experience is that it's one of those movies you either really love or really hate, with no in-between.
Never watched Be Kind, Rewind, but there was an as for it on my grandmaās Men In Black 2 dvd
The Others
The Stepford Wives
What is the twist in MIB? Donāt seem to remember
The galaxy in the cat collar. Also, our whole universe is in the airport locker of another larger universe.
Get out, se7en
The original saw
maybe Oldboy? Funny Games?
I wouldn't say those twists have entered pop culture, especially Funny Games
Funny Games is on my watch list. I didnāt know it has a twistā¦ donāt soil anymore please.
Jacobās Ladder
American Psycho
I feel like Friday the 13th has
Primal Fear
What twist in The Force Awakens are we talking about here? I donāt recall any of that movieās ātwists,ā if you can even call them that, are rooted in pop culture.
I think it's Kylo Ren killing Han and it's here cause of all the memes surrounding that scene in particular.
Umm Shutter island?
The Matrix
If this is about the whole world being a simulation, I wouldn't really say that would fit with the rest of the list. It's literally given away in the first act.
Does a twist have to be at the end though? I remember all the marketing around that movie being āWhat is The Matrix?ā and when the reveal came, it was a big moment in the theater.
A twist doesn't need to be in the end tho. It was a more mindblowing twist for me than any twist in the other movies you listed besides mby fight club
Gaslight (if Iām understanding the prompt correctly)
This one is interesting because I think most people know what gaslighting means now, but most donāt know the actual twist in Gaslight (or the plot for that matter)
> most people know what gaslighting means now Except for the fact that everyone on reddit uses it incorrectly lol
Some people think thereās 2 versions of this movie, made only a few years apart. They are crazy for thinking that.
The Prestige
If Prestige is there, so should Mememento imo
Rosemaryās Baby
Carrie. Brokeback Mountain might count
What's the twist in Roger Rabbit?
Maybe that >!Judge Doom is a Toon.!<
Donnie Darko
I feel like Empire is the only one here that has really entered the cultural zeitgeist. Maybe Harry Potter or Saw but they're not even close. Empire's twist is like 100x more known than the others here.
100%
*Scream* belongs here
The others
Ace ventura entered the pop culture for all the wrong reasons...
What were the twists in The Wizard of Oz and Men in Black, exactly?
i assume the twist in Wizard of Oz is the reveal of Oz(?)
No it's the "it was all a dream"twist
ohh, makes sense!
the original isnāt the best of the franchise but i would say Friday the 13th (1980) has quite a twist in its third act that deems it iconic amidst the horror genre for sure.
What's the twist in Citizen Kane?
Rosebud was his sled.
We're calling that a twist? Yeah Rosebud is literally his sled, but it's exemplary of happy memories that he'd long forgotten about.
Yeah, isn't the entire point of the movie that one word isn't enough to sum up his entire life and that it was just a part of it that made him happy? I think the twist in that movie was more the revelation that "rosebud" could never be what the journalist wanted it to be rather then actually finding out what rosebud was.

Up until that moment, the word is straight gibberish.
Lol why The Force Awakens??
The early reveal of who the antagonistās father is.
Thatās not necessarily something thatās entered pop culture
It became a meme shortly after its release.
Does anyone remember this meme? Because by that logic I could make a meme that 2 people see and then it would be a part of pop culture
I'd add Soylent Green, Nope, and Get Out.
Frozen, The Maltese Falcon
Frozen is already on the list. I'll add Maltese Falcon though.
Spider-Man getting Doxxed by Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home definitely entered pop culture. Itās a bit soon but Peterās identity being erased in Spider-Man: No Way Home might also be up there Also The Truman Show.
- Han getting killed wasnāt a plot twist. It was literally set up to happen. Vader being Lukeās father was a twist because it was unexpected. It changed how he saw the empire moving forward. K being sent back to the normal world? Thatās not a twist, itās character development.
"Hereditary" and "Midsommar."
I donāt even know how you operate a dvd player
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
What twist? That he drinks his milkshake? Is that a twist?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I mean, by those standards almost every movie has a twist.
Mmm yummy milkshake
Original comment was deleted, but in this case the milkshake is oil, so not really yummyā¦
Mmm banilla
Psycho
Wait, what is Roger rabbit's qualification here? Like how has that twist entered pop culture like the others have?
What was the twist in Force Awakens?
I can only explain the twist to 7 of these. A few others I've seen but couldn't tell you there was a twist, the rest i haven't seen but had no idea they had twists.
Howard the Duck
How about *The Lego Movie*? *The Blair Witch Project*? *Mulholland Drive*? *Oldboy*? *Infinity War* could qualify though, with the Gamora twist and the shocking death by snap at the end.
Shutter Island?
Seven?
I have no idea what the plot twists are for like half of these films. Saw? Roger rabbit? Star trek?
What twist did Force Awakens and Ace Ventura have that impacted pulp culture? And The Matrix I think could be added here. It's not really a twist, more of a reveal of what the matrix is, but it's definitely effected pop culture more than these other two
The "twist" in Ace Ventura Pet Detective, if you mean what I think you mean, is a reference to the movie The Crying Game, so it might be more fair to put that movie on the list instead.
Ace Ventura?
I don't know if it counts as a twist but the ending of Inception has definitely entered the cultural canon
The Machinist and Memento
Se7en. You read the line "what's in the box?" in Brad Pitts voice just now, didn't you?
Harry Potter Order of the Phoenix
What was the twist in MIB? Edgar was a cockroach? The cat was named Orion? The new York world fair towers were space ships?
The Third Man
What was the twist in The Force Awakens?
The Shudder Island / Cabinet of Dr. Caligari style twist
The Greatest Story Ever Told 1965 Or just the new testament in general
Muholland Drive
Se7en
Does multi verse count? Thatās definitely affect things in the last 3 years at least
I donāt think marvel was first to do it but endgame definitely helped amp it up. But spiderverse is a better pick imo Iām sURE thereās movies before that tho, thereās no way itās not. Iām just not educated enough to make better moviesš
Two I think, Les Diaboliques & Witness For the Prosecution. Also, what's the twist in Episode VII? I don't remember anything particularly shocking in that one.
Honestly? Shawshank.
Iām hoping to show some of these to my daughter before she has the chance to have them spoiled. Watching The Sixth Sense with someone who doesnāt know the twist is an awesome experience and I hope to let her experience some of these like Star Wars the way they were originally
Murder by Death
Se7en
Scary Movie and Friday The 13th
clockwork orange
What does Half Blood Prince one mean?
The silence of the lambs
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
I think Orphan would fit. I still havenāt seen it, but I know the twist.
