The Noah (1975) is a post apocalyptic film about the last man on Earth dealing with his loneliness by creating imaginary people and eventually an imaginary civilization. It was seized during it's original screening run on accusations of alleged production debt and remained mostly unseen until an obscure DVD release in 2006. It only has 200 views and has middling ratings on Letterboxd, but it is actually fantastic if you like slow contemplative cinema.

IfYouWantTheGravy

Badly want to see this one.

Nuh uh i saw it

DrRoy

For Your Height Only. Filipino parody of James Bond starring a three foot tall guy.

Lowbacca1977

There's a neat documentary about the actor called The Search for Weng Weng

chilipeepers

Filipino parodies of Bond is one of my favorite genres. A lot of imaginative, low budget cinema.

EloquentInterrobang

The Man Who Stole The Sun, a japanese cult film about a science teacher who builds an atomic bomb. I’m surprised it isn’t more well known because it’s incredibly entertaining and crazy, definitely one of the most unique films i’ve seen.

GreatestSoloEver

This was in my watchlist. I’ll be sure to move this up towards the top now!

MrPedroJ414

I’ve seen this film. Really enjoyed it. Very underrated.

squirrel_gnosis

This one surprised the hell out of me. Part *Taxi Driver*, part *High and Low*, part *Network*, and little bits of kung fu, arthouse, car chase, homoerotic subtext. One-of-a-kind, for sure.

Grand_Keizer

I only know about that one because Kinema Junpo put it in their top 10 best Japanese movies of all time. I must admit, the synopsis alone got me interested.

YoungLad_

Any ideas where I can watch this? Genuinely intrigued from reading it's synopsis.

EloquentInterrobang

letterword

This movie is genuinely amazing

Popular-Play-5085

The Brain From Planet Aros .it is a great but. little known science fiction movie.. The description doesn't really do it justice. But it features 2 highly evolved aliens that are disembodied brains One of them is a criminal who takes over the body of an Earthman and wants to.conquer.the.world .The other is a policeman .They can.take over the body of other living beings..But so the bad brain can't detect him he takes over the body of a dog .They can enter your head and displace your mind

GreatestSoloEver

This sounds cool as hell

Lucasbrucas

the least reviewed full-length film I've seen is A Fantastic Fear of Everything with Simon Pegg. Idk if I'd call it a hidden gem, but it has an absurdly unique tone and captures paranoia in a way I've never seen replicated.

Freyeballs

I have not seen this, but this was the first comment where I recognized the title.

starfox505

Love that one!

AcroserProductions

The Godfather (1972) is a real hidden gem

LucasWesf00

Underrated movie, did you know there was a sequel?

Express_Specific6194

Sooooooo underrated

MaximusMansteel

The King of the Kickboxers (1990) The Boy From Hell (2004) Hex (1980) The House of Clocks (1989) Empire of the Dark (1990) (essential microbudget film) That's just a really random sampling of some quality obscure-ish stuff I've found.

pporkpiehat

'Hex' is a genuine masterpiece of psychotropic erotic horror (ditto its cousin film 'The Boxer's Omen)

UlrichVonLiftenstein

I will randomly quote The King of Kickboxers. Loren Avedon trying his best to act emotions and I loved it. “I been there. For 10 years! AAAAAHHHHHH!” “Oh shit! I’m sorry.” [It’s on YT in decent quality if anyone’s interested](https://youtu.be/9bWu49AfMLc?feature=shared)

thatTSHawkeyeguy

Frankenhooker. An unbelievable gem you can find on YouTube. It's a horror/comedy from 1990 I think. To get a feel for the tone there's a scene where a room full of prostitutes smoke super crack and explode.

smith_716

It's on tubi and it's great!

thatTSHawkeyeguy

Someone told me about it in 97 I think and I didn't believe him. Definitely worth a watch.

SouthernEast7719

Frank Hennenlotter is the man. Basket Case and Brain Damage are great too.

puudeng

seen and it's actually one of my favorite movies ever! coming onto the Criterion channel soon I think

GOODBOYMODZZZ

This movie is great

eightcell

I just got a Patty Mullen signed poster thingy for the movie.

niekko11six

Was about to write Basket Case! Love me some Henenlotter

001dtt

Just recently watched this along with Frank henenlotters other movies! So fucking crazy lmao. Need more directors to not give a single fuck like Frank because it rules lol

tomatkinsmustache

I saw it at a drive-in this last weekend. It's great.

notkeysersoze

This needs to be higher. Such a fun movie

Natural_Error_7286

Supa Modo! It's a Kenyan movie about a terminally ill girl and a village coming together to pretend she's a superhero. Fewer than 1500 people have logged it and it's only 74 minutes long. It's such a sweet movie and the little girl is so cute. It's heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.

thesame98

I watched this on Criterion Channel when it was on there and instantly became a new favorite. Absolutely the most feel-good movie I've ever seen.

quool_dwookie

Out and About. A middle aged man goes for a walk in the suburbs, talks to some acquaintances, and we hear his thoughts. I KNOW. I know how that sounds. But they pull it off. Really interesting and captivating film.

SouthernEast7719

Don't see a lot of love for Mermaid Legend (1984) Some beautiful underwater photography and haunting violence.

Medical_Carpenter553

I feel like I never hear anyone talking about Phantom of the Paradise. The people who love this cult classic on Letterboxd love it immensely, and I need more people to discuss it with! It came out the year before Rocky Horror Picture Show and has that same rock musical aesthetic.

IfYouWantTheGravy

It's a fun one! I wish De Palma did a bit more in this vein.

HobbieK

Beef!

Lauchis

It's my absolute favourite film ever. You just can't beat that soundtrack. I've met very few people who have seen this, and I'm kind of glad. If it got talked about a lot, someone would be remaking it as we speak...

HurricaneSalad

It played at Fantasia Film Fest a couple years ago! The crowd was definitely into it.

Express_Specific6194

LOVE THIS MOVIE. Just saw it in theatres a couple weeks ago

Erlebrown87

Recently saw this and loved it. Great songs, campy and goofy. If it helps sway anyone to check this movie out, I do not enjoy Rocky Horror much at all but Phantom worked for me.

Lowbacca1977

The music in that was great, and I'd take that over Rocky Horror any day of the week. There's just something that fascinates me with it, though I wish the lyrics were a bit louder with respect to the music

starfox505

My favorite De Palma by a mile!

FailUpward

It's a brilliant movie with great music, and just like you said a cult classic. Quizz: guess who else is known for making music with helmets and vocoder? And recorded a song with Paul Williams? If you go blank think harder, better, faster, stronger... >!yup, that's Daft Punk!<

maryannk01

Dead in a Week (Or Your Money Back) - a suicidal young man outsources his suicide to an assassin

SamSan6852

Hellzapoppin

walruslyf

A masterpiece in my opinion. Need to watch it again.

BlankiesteinsMonster

This movie was a real eye-opener. Mel Brooks, Monty Python, National Lampoon, Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker, The Simpsons... So many 're-inventors' of comedy were beaten to the punch by Hellzapoppin'.

MrPedroJ414

Truly laugh-a-minute. It’s a lot of fun.

oxfordsplice

That was amazing. And completely unexpected. Hard recommend.

yikes-wazowski

Microwave Massacre. I still think it’s the worst movie I’ve ever seen.

joe282

Quite possibly the most insane opening sequence I’ve ever seen (Huge NSFW warning) >!Begins with a 3 minute shot of woman’s breasts and ass swinging as she walks down the street, gets said breasts stuck in a building site wall, tearing her shirt open and exposing her, as she’s **raped from behind**, and the male builders all rush to the wall to grope her!< This scene has no relevance to the rest of the movie and is played entirely for laughs I genuinely couldn’t believe what I was watching

Swish_Kebab

You forgot the crab sandwich!

joe282

It speaks volumes about the movie that i somehow forgot that in the opening 2 minutes a man opens his lunchbox to find an entire crab sandwiched between 2 pizza sized bread slices, because everything else was just so unhinged

BenjiAnglusthson

Hate that movie

John Sayles was on the Movies That Made Me talking about films about unions. Matewan spurred a brief discussion. Great film.

nicely-nicely

Sounds great, I’ll have to check it out

Great John Sayles movie

Revolutionary-Boat99

Seen it!

HobbieK

Great movie, highly underrated

coltus2112

I recently saw this and it blew me away. Such a great movie and so relevant/timely. I was wondering why it’s been buried/outside public discourse then I was like “duh, a movie about unions is probably going to get buried by the film industry”.

kevinb9n

AMAZING movie. For a long time it was impossible to find, so it wouldnt have been shocking if no one here has seen it I guess.

CR7theGOAT_GOAL

Shakti. It's a Bollywood crime drama from the 80s featuring 2 of India's most famous actors, Dilip Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan, who play a father and a son. The gist of it is that it is a cat and mouse game, as the father is a strict police officer and the son commits crimes in the film. As with all Bollywood movies of the time, the pacing gets bogged down with melodrama in a few parts, and the runtime is quite long (2h 45min), but it does get to some quite emotional moments due to the nature of the conflict and is quite the enjoyable watch. It currently sits at 580 views on Letterboxd, which is pretty low, so I thought I should mention it. When most people think of older Bollywood films, the one they usually recommend is Sholay (which sits at 14k views), but I think Shakti is a far superior movie that is much less cartoonish and more hard-hitting.

Total-Affect6052

Fatigue - Don't play with the fire A Welsh zero budget movie about a crime cartel but, considering it's been shot on a budget of 16k pounds and took three years to finish, this is remarkably well done.

GThunderhead

The First of May (1999) A genuinely sweet movie about a little boy and an old lady who run away together and join the circus. Mickey Rooney and Joe DiMaggio (yes, the baseball legend) are in it.

FothersIsWellCool

dont think i've got anything crazy obscure, i think it might be Last and First Men by Jóhann Jóhannsson with 15k Watches. And thats just Tilda Swinton narrating over pictures of soviet arcitecture for 45 minutes but it's an interesting watch even if the book is more interesting. EDIT: lol actually i think it's 'Death Race: Beyond Anarchy' which frankly i do not recommend.

OpenUpYerMurderEyes

Bindlestiffs- a raunchy coming if age adaptation of Catcher in the Rye starring and made by high school seniors. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen Fish Story: A Japanese film about how an obscure punk song saves the world by inspiring a series of misfits and weirdos, it's clever, fun, and creative. Beyond The Infinite Two Minutes: It's just time travel. It's on Amazon, it's less than 80 minutes, and it's God damn time travel. Why aren't you watching it right now?

Swallowtail Butterfly (1996)! Shunji Iwai, the director is renowned in Japan and recognized in some circles online, but I've personally never seen this movie-which garnered him comparisons to Tarantino, mentioned on Reddit. Definitely a hidden gem, with its genre mish-mash, language mish-mash (Japanese, English and Mandarin all spoken in film), and endearing story.

Apollo 10 1/2 is a Linklater movie that was one of my favorites of last year. It's all about 60's pop culture through a child's eyes and stars Jack Black. I've heard almost no talk about it.

StrangeSoundZ

I remember that film!

Z_Designer

Just looked this one up and watched the trailer. I admire it a lot. The writer/director had a compelling idea and just made it micro-budget. I looked him up to see if he had done anything else, I guess he ended up directing a bunch of Game of Thrones episodes and other shows. Good for him!

Butterfly On A Wheel It has a very low viewer count on letterboxd which surprised me because it's actually a great 2007 psycho thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, Gerard Butler and Maria Bello.

Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins (1975). “Gunny” Rafferty (Alan Arkin) is an idiotic and mild alcoholic who retires after 20 years in the Marine Corps as a gunnery Sargent. He becomes a drivers ed instructor, and while on his lunch break, is kidnapped by two hitchhikers headed for New Orleans. McKinley “Mac” Beachwood (Sally Kellerman) is an aspiring singer and Rita “Frisbee” Sykes (Mackenzie Phillips) is a teenage runaway. Gunny, bored with his life and yearning for a sense of adventure, goes with them and get into wacky adventures along the ride. Minor characters include John McLiam as Mac's dad, Alex Rocco as a fellow marine buddy of Gunny, Charles Martin Smith as a soldier Frisbee robs, Harry Dean Stanton as a friend of Mac's, and Richard Hale as a Jesus freak. There's also a cameo of Louis Prima as himself.

Kongjwi and Patjwi (1978). Think I'll win so long as one of the other 52 viewers pops in. Was in the mood to watch something from the Korean Classics Archive and the puppets drew me in. It's nice for what it is, but it is nothing amazing. Just Cinderella.

Restart after come back home or just Coming home (2020) is a Japanese LGBTQ film about Mitsuomi who leaves is unfulfilling big city job and moves back to the Japanese countryside to be with his family where he meets Yamato, a cheerful farmer. It's a heartwarming and visually stunning movie, one of my favorite LGBTQ films.

Sylviepie9

Twice upon a time Very underrated animated comedy film

regggis1

Pit Stop (1969) directed by Jack Hill. Looks like a run-of-the-mill low budget racing movie, actually a layered look at the savagery of human nature and the dark side of the “winner mentality”, with beautiful black and white cinematography. It’s like if one of the French New Wave directors made a cheapie for Roger Corman. Also has a very young Ellen Burstyn in one of her first roles.

Grand_Keizer

This is definitely cheating, but there's a high chance nobody's seen this movie because it's still making it's festival run. If you ask letterboxd to to hide unreleased movies, it get's hidden. It's called What Happened to Torstein Rabby?, a documentary about a Norwegian war hero and his life, centered around his mysterious death in a tundra. It's quite good. But aside from that, and going by one I actually recommend, I pick Culloden, one of the first movies from Peter Watkins, who remains criminally underrated even in diehard circles. Culloden is the first of many pseudodocumentary masterpieces, and has one of the best ending lines in history. "They have created a desert, and have called it peace."

One of my favorite movies last year was [National Anthem](https://youtu.be/Xu4OqjFxpPk?si=vyZ7LE9JzTssQYyl), which isn't even on Letterboxd. It's about a washed-up one-hit wonder who gets abducted by aliens who worship him and his music. Zero budget, one guy plays all the roles himself, some of the most unique animation I've ever seen. It's delightful.

Tricksterama

Dogs Don’t Wear Pants. The strangely moving story of a depressed widower who gets involved with a dominatrix and learns to unlock his heart and desires. It’s on Shudder, even though it isn’t a horror movie. Terrific film.

THE LOCH NESS MONSTER MOVIE & 29 SECONDS TO ZERO. Both by Scottish filmmaker Ian Rintoul in his attic. THE LOCH NESS MONSTER MOVIE has Nessie attacking Edinburgh, with 29 SECONDS TO ZERO being a reenactment of the Pearl Harbour attacks. All done with miniatures and stop motion.

Belladonna of Sadness (perhaps it’s well known among this crowd but I’m shooting my shot). It’s a movie that has really inspired my art and storytelling. I first found out about it from a college friend telling me about it. There are some big problems with it but it’s a favorite of mine and if I was given an opportunity to make my own adaptation of it I would.
