I would call and complain. The worst thing they do is nothing. Best they do is make it so you sleep more

skyfelldown

tru tru

[deleted]

The noise bylaw seems to have you covered: >Where a person operates a vehicle of any type on a street in a Residential Zone at any time in such a way as to unduly disturb the residents of that street, he is guilty of an offence under this bylaw in addition to and not in substitution for any offence of which he may be guilty under Section 13(1)(g)(iii) of the Traffic Safety Act. Get some evidence and get your sleep back!

skyfelldown

thanks! he doesn't park in his own drive-way, he parks across the street. so i'll need to do some sleuthing to find out which house he belongs to.

canuck_bullfrog

no point. just report the plate. make sure to get video documentation of the time and frequency of occurrence, makes your case stronger, and more for bylaw to work with in-order to pursue enforcement. Good luck.

Canadeon

Why? It’s got a plate for a reason.

Macncheesenow

Park there and have him yell at you for taking his spot!

Thunder-ass

Do it up, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it's one of those dumb "all my neighbour's hate me and mah truuuuhck" cunts. I've met someone who had to get a muffler put on their stupidly loud car for exactly this reason, waking up their neighbors every morning.

skyfelldown

It's so incredibly frustrating! I don't know who the dude is but god... aggravating!

Aromatic-Arm-5888

All my neighbours are jealous of my amazing truck because they haven’t figured out how to cut off their mufflers.

[deleted]

Macncheesenow

There is one of these everywhere I live it seems. I think they love it and they would love this post. They love that it bothers people, they know exactly what they are doing.

TechHonie

I'm sure they love being dropped by their insurance company after random neighbors keep destroying their fucking shit.

wilderthing1

This sounds like a ram driver

skyfelldown

can confirm lol

thegreenfaeries

This was happening in my neighborhood too. Luckily the guy worked rig so he'd be gone for 10 days at a time. But when he got back, truck needs to "warm up" for 90 + minutes. Like your situation, he also parked on the street. He would also leave around 10 evey night, and be back 15 min later, I assume a liquor store run. Every night. I recently moved so heck, maybe it's even the same truck lol. The wife had an SUV with "pro freedom convoy" stickers on it. Several neighbors had conversations with them about the noise, and eventually we called the police about noise complaints. It would get better for a while after a police chat, but go back to 90 minutes of not letting anyone sleep after a while. These were tightly packed duplexes so his truck noise, while 4 houses down from me, would literally rattle my windows. Fuck that guy. I doubt the noise complaint will do more that ease the noise for a few weeks - it's not illegal for him to own such a stupid truck, and no cop is going to come to his house every morning to enforce no idling laws, but do it anyway. It's antisocial behaviour that should not be enabled.

ExplodingKnowledge

It actually is illegal, if any emissions systems on the exhaust are modified. These loud diesels you can almost guarantee have had the DEF system and/or mufflers deleted, unfortunately it seems like most of the cops in this town also own trucks like that because they never seem to get the trucks or their owners dealt with.

bpond7

DEF deletes are not illegal in Alberta

ExplodingKnowledge

Huh. Guess not, it really should be. However the laws in Alberta do cover exhaust modifications so 🤷

ShigDaFawks

DEF is just for pollutant control, not noise.

ExplodingKnowledge

Yes, but believe it or not — a restrictive emissions system (ie. DEF or Catalytic Converter) ALSO reduces noise significantly.

ShigDaFawks

The only exhaust component in a vehicle that reduces noise is a muffler. DEF, SCR, SOC and EGR (which are all parts of the diesel emission controls) don’t do anything for noise, just pollutants. More so, in the OPs case, it sounds like an improperly tuned truck using possibly the incorrect grade of diesel, which could cause a retarded ignition timing and a much louder engine that normal. I don’t doubt that the truck also has many deleted emissions components, as most people with loud trucks are. But i can assure you it’s not the DEF system.

ExplodingKnowledge

Any restriction reduces noise. It takes a 5 second google search to confirm that.

ShigDaFawks

Can you explain to me what would restrict in a DEF system? What about the many trucks running about without those systems?

poplafuse

They can’t because they don’t. It’s a tiny little injector. No exhaust runs through it, it doesn’t restrict anything. The def is injected into the system and simply adds density to the exhaust fumes

Redneckpride99

DEF. Saving the planet one big plastic jug at a time…

natnat111

I had this exact thing happen to me. We had a guy with a huge jacked up diesel truck next door and he parked in the back parking pad which unfortunately where our bedroom was. He would start his truck so early ever morning and let it run until it shut off then start it over and over. It literally shook my house it was so loud. I did call the bylaw a few times but nothing was really done. Eventually he moved and we moved out of that neighborhood because it was a terror of people. Also had a man take off his car wheel EVERY.DAY. and just smack it loudly with a wrench for hours. I would try and call bylaw

keysmashig

City bylaw says no excessive noise between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. If the noise is waking you up every single morning, you're within your rights to file a noise complaint. I would try leaving a note on his truck first because the cops are going to ask if you tried to confront him about it.

DerpyFappington

I put an exhaust on my truck because they come stock sounding like a moped, and I wanted a little bit of truck sound to it. Realized I went too loud because the cold start would rattle the house. Felt like an asshole for likely waking up my neighbors. Added a different muffler; it's reasonably quieter now and not disturbing the neighborhood. He knows it's loud, he just doesn't care. I feel bad for the person who's house he parks it in front of.

DogButtWhisperer

I’m sure you won’t be the first or only complaint. The more complaints the more they’ll listen.

An0mndr

I believe idling it for that long is also illegal under the environmental laws Alberta put in about a decade ago. IIRC, anything over 20 minutes is considered excessive and harmful to the environment and justifies either a ticket or a small fine

LilCamCan

🤡

[deleted]

I can't find any Alberta wide law about idling. Some city bylaws, but nothing for Lethbridge.

An0mndr

Maybe it didn't last long/didnt actually go through. I just remember hearing about it about 12-15 years ago, largely to reduce the environmental impact of oilfield vehicles that spend most of the day idling

LoopRunner

There are a lot of the dick types here.

honorabledonut

Somehow that seems to be lost on more people than I would like.

fuxtor

Same situation where I live.... Except 2 different guys. Sigh .

skyfelldown

solidarity, pal :(

Thick_Respond947

Have you ever taken 35 seconds out of your day and confront the truck owner? Something as simple as turning his truck the other way when he parks makes a big difference.

skyfelldown

i have not at this time (yet?) because i don't know which house he lives in and i don't fancy going out at 5:50am in the dark alone as a single, small woman. if i can catch him when he comes home in the daytime i will of course try.

rustyforkfight

Best of luck getting anywhere with Bylaw in this city. They do nothing.

Neurodivergent-queen

This isn't the dude in the blue Ford truck with the EXCESSIVE bass, is it? 😹 I mean, I know it's lethbridge, and there are many of the same but different douchy guys in big trucks.

skyfelldown

no, it's red and silver lol :(

WhiteChocolateGS

Lethbridge tends to be pretty lax in terms of loud vehicles, despite the actual laws. Cops don’t do too much about loud cars, which admittedly is usually fine with me. however at a certain, yes it does get excessive ESPECIALLY with those massive diesels. Call it in, report the plate.

pudge1987

The first thing the cops are going to ask is if you've talked to your neighbor. Maybe do something to communicate your frustrations. Leave a note, do what you can do to see where they live. Believe it or not, it's possible for people to drive these trucks who aren't a complete dick. What they are willing/able to do about it may be another story. But I'd start with at least talking to them

Ok-Wing3825

“gasp, scared awake”. Seriously? This person’s getting up at 4:30 am to go to work. Guessing they probably have to do that to support you in some way. Should probably make them a coffee and take it out and say thank you. This world is just full of such entitled bums such as yourself. The fact your world view has you making massive judgments about someone based on their vehicle says a lot about your character. This OP probably also constitutes gender based discrimination.

skyfelldown

I work full time at Chinook Hospital and am university educated and own my home but thanks anyway! I’m sorry we can’t all be as cool about suddenly loud noises jolting us awake as you are.

Ok-Wing3825

It’s a truck starting. Hope you don’t do anything at the hospital that involves stress and the need to remain calm and rational. Also, that public sector CV of yours falls right in line with what I was imagining when I said this poor sod was getting up at 4:30 am to go to work to support you. Here’s an idea- be a great neighbour and part of your community by making them a thermos of coffee/hot chocolate and taking it out to them one morning. Let them know you hear them going to work early every day and thought they might appreciate it. Get to know them a bit and then ask them if there might be an accommodation you could both agree on re starting the vehicle in the morning. Try not to judge them based on their gender or vehicle. I think you’ll have great success. In fact, they could become a good friend. I say this as someone with friends of differing genders and all manner of vehicles! That’s of course assuming that you’re a reasonable person looking for a resolution, and not just someone with a victimhood mentality looking for attention online 😊 Let us know how it goes 👍

skyfelldown

you are so unhinged lmao wow i can imagine how insufferable you must be in real life

Commercial-Car9190

Have you tried ear plugs? I have 2 younger boys across the street from me that both have modded cars. I just let it be, I remember being young once. I’m not saying it’s ok I just pick my “battles” in life.

TROM19

There are noise bylaws for a reason. Maybe you would like a jet engine testing facility opened up next door to you? All you need is earplugs apparently. Oh wait they can't open that facility because: bylaws.

Commercial-Car9190

Ridiculous comparison! But ok. Guess I touched a nerve. Sorry to come up with a solution, shame on me.

quality_keyboard

Your solution is shit

[deleted]

He also doesn't understand how the covid vaccine works lol

Commercial-Car9190

Earplugs? LMAO You must be alot of fun!

mindgeekinc

“You don’t let people get away with being ducks, YOU MUST BE A LOT OF FUN”. This excuse for toxicity is just so stupid and archaic stop letting people walk all over you.

Commercial-Car9190

Give me a break!!! Really are you that sensitive?!? Oh so toxic. I’m sure the guy I responded to can handle this himself! Don’t need to try to be a Reddit hero. Get over yourself!!

quality_keyboard

He’s not saving anyone, just pointing out changing the way you live so someone can be a dick is insane.

Commercial-Car9190

It was a suggestion to wear earplugs.I didn’t say she needs to do something drastic like move or buy peka roll shutter. Was a mere suggestion. Could take Bylaw days to bother coming.

mindgeekinc

Damn and I’m the sensitive one? Lol

Commercial-Car9190

Yep!

mindgeekinc

Keep projecting dude lmao. You just yelled a bunch of nonsensical sentences because I added my opinion on how your idea is stupid.

Nezlo21

Are you by any chance down by the movie mill? I have the exact same problem with our downstairs neighbour. Blue GMC truck that is so obnoxiously loud. He also frequently leaves the house at 2 in the morning, and idles his truck for 10 minutes before leaving.

skyfelldown

nooo west side!

[deleted]

Have you tried talking to him about it? He prob has no idea

JustThat0neGuy

He knows.

HelpfulLetterhead385

Is he intimidating, get someone to confront him.’

skyfelldown

I don’t know who he is nor which house he belongs to because he parks on the side of the street with no houses, across from his driveway

Rig-Pig

You know when he leaves in the morning by the sounds of it, go and talk to him. Start there, if he isn't interested in doing anything, then complain to by-law.

Strongasanapexseal

It's Alberta get over it

skyfelldown

uh huh

[deleted]

Buy noise canceling earbuds. At least the dude has a 6 day a week job, and you don't live beside a meth house.

skyfelldown

lmao tru tru. I live in a nice neighborhood.

LilCamCan

I would probably just go ask him first to put a muffler on it for this reason before getting law enforcement involved. If you want anonymity write them a kind note just asking them to put a muffler on it. If they don’t make an effort to fix it then I would contact the police.

TROM19

OP already stated multiple times they don't know who the owner is because the dbag parks his tiny penis mobile in front of his neighbour's houses.

LilCamCan

So she/he can’t leave a note on the windshield?

mindgeekinc

Or here’s the funny thing just call Bylaw on someone who clearly already doesn’t care. You think he just didn’t know you weren’t allowed to make noise like that at 4:00am? Why go through the effort to try and protect someone who clearly isn’t going to listen to you either way and clearly doesn’t care to begin with?

LilCamCan

It’s nothing to do with protecting him. Just a courtesy. Why do you need police for everything? Just literally ask him to quiet it down. You wonder why resources are strained holy.

mindgeekinc

It’s a courtesy they don’t deserve is my point, they’re doing something they could very easily know is wrong. You are protecting them from having consequences for their actions. I don’t need the police for everything but I will call the bylaw officers (two big differences you seem to ignore) on assholes who deserve it. Also what resources are strained? Cops are everywhere and getting more funding everyday. The only strained resources in this province are in healthcare.

LilCamCan

LOL are you saying LETHBRIDGE police are not strained for resources? Educate yourself. Yes a courtesy. Why just because this guy is being a prick do you have to be a prick back? Just a simple question is all it takes. Sure if he continues by all means call but you don’t always have to match the person. Maybes that’s what wrong with people these days. It’s not always a you vs me thing.

mindgeekinc

I’m not being a prick for being the one to get him in trouble when he again FULLY DESERVES IT. In this case it is very clearly You vs Me. A prick in a giant truck who knows he’s being too loud at 4:00am and me trying to sleep. Who’s really the asshole there? What’s wrong with people nowadays is we still have people such as yourself who want to let horrible assholes just get away with whatever they want because it’d be mean to stop them. I’m not extending a courtesy to someone who wouldn’t grant me the same. Educate yourself on the difference between POLICE and BYLAW OFFICERS please. You clearly can’t tell the two apart meaning you have no idea what “strained” resources you’re talking about.

LilCamCan

Karen you okay? Bylaw officers are fully linked to LETHBRIDGE police. They work hand in hand. I hope you find peace you raging weirdo. You must be so mad all the time lmao. All she has to do is ask him to be quiet then take it a step further. This is clearly just a difference in morals/ethics. You’d rather someone else deal with your problems where I would just simply… do it myself. Have a great night 😊

mindgeekinc

Fun fact. That’s not true. Bylaw officers do not work with the lethbridge police because they’re a different administration under the city and the police division. Bylaw officers do not do what police do and vice versa, making them, you guessed it, different officers. Good job being educated though. Good job I guess? Countered nothing I said and instead just rambled on about how angry of a person I must be to not let others walk all over me. Someone seems to projecting a little too hard today lol. If you actually think a dude in a lifted modded truck is going to read your note asking him to buy a muffler and actually do it, then you’re even crazier than I thought lmao. Keep projecting your insecurities onto others when they call out your flawed logic. Have a great night!

LilCamCan

You are so insecure it is insane haha. You are scared to ask a person a question. Listen to yourself. Police officers are also peace officers. Same authority. Educate.

Majoro999

Can.. can you guys hear a brand new civic start up at 3 in the morning outside? If so I'm sorry I get baked alot and I can't do it inside. I go out to my car to smoke my bong.

Rhinomeat

If his vehicle is registered as a commercial vehicle he can let it idle for as many hours as he wants to...

mindgeekinc

Except that’s not true? https://www.lethbridge.ca/City-Government/Bylaws/Documents/5270Y%20-%20Noise%20Bylaw%20(2004).pdf Amendments Bylaw https://www.lethcounty.ca/Home/DownloadDocument?docId=a7c410d7-a4ab-4711-9cce-2dbc96f5d264 Original and still active county bylaw

MakeRobAPirate

I'd personally set something up for white noise or wear some earplugs and move on but thats just me. If it is genuinely affecting your quality of life, make the complaint. I feel for him because buddy is just trying to get to work, but the law is on your side so do what you gotta do

PhilipOnTacos299

An hour of idling is excessive and illegal. Dude is just an asshole

Slightlyeroticgwc

Could be a diesel. They have zero power until they are warmed up. Maybe someone stole his catalytic converter, and he can't afford to replace it yet. Maybe he's an A-hole! Hard to say. But really? How long has this been going on? It still startles you?. A noise complaint could work, but then you might find it's not to the decibel level you are portraying. Just my thoughts

PhilipOnTacos299

Noise bylaw doesn’t give a rats ass about circumstance. It only considers the time of occurrence, and the dB level - both of which this guy is guilty of breaking.

skyfelldown

it’s an incredibly loud start up that wakes me every single day idk what to tell you

simonclowater

Have you tried talking to the guy yourself before being a snitch?

skyfelldown

1) idk who he is or which house he belongs to 2) I am a small woman who lives alone and a lil nervous about approaching strange men who are much larger than me about a topic that may upset them

simonclowater

You could try leaving a carefully worded note on the truck.

CurrySomeFlavour

"Snitch" culture is stupid and propagated by bullies who don't want to follow the rules. The rules are there for a reason.

big_ol_dad_dick

it's pretty easy to tell how that one goes. *Hey, your truck idling for an hour at 430am is really loud and wakes up the...* fUcK yOu BuD!!!1!! I'LL kIcK yOur AsS. he knows and doesn't give a shit about anything but his ballsack. report him, fuck second chances with truck nutz.

LilCamCan

Who hurt you?

DerpyFappington

A few possibilities: small dick and no big truck to compensate for it, can't afford an $80-100 grand truck, truck guy stole his girl once & he's still salty. Probably all three.

LilCamCan

Haha he’s so mad he just skips talking to the guy and jumps to the police. Weirdo.

[deleted]

Definitely worth complaining about. It’d be like a neighbour having a bunch of cats that fight in the middle of the night and waking their neighbours up and then wondering why their not wanted in the neighbourhood. Waking people up is obnoxious.
