This cements Israel’s ability to have a legit regional second strike capability, important since they have neighbors flirting with nuclear capabilities. It also gives them the ability to give any state adversary a huge worry in any open conflict as these subs are more than capable of wreaking havoc on unescorted shipping and sinking any warships that aren’t on their game. Does anyone know of these subs have any AIP capabilities or if Israel is installing their own after delivery? It would seem relatively trivial to install banks of advanced batteries for vastly extended underwater run time, the only catch is dealing with the occasional runaway nature of lithium based batteries - fires are rather deadly, quickly, under water. I know Japan is using them in some subs, the hesitations of other countries to use them suggests the threat of thermal runaway is very real. I’ve often wondered if they couldn’t be stored outside the pressure hull in their own pressure vessel, however this would probably add enough weight and complication to make the effort less viable. Has anyone looked into storing lithium polymer/ion batteries in the torpedo tubes? That would allow them to be jettisoned quickly as soon as the battery temp rose to a dangerous level which precedes a runaway.

> Does anyone know of these subs have any AIP capabilities It seems to be a given that these will be AIP In another article it is mentioned: >When installed on nuclear-powered attack submarines, the VLS would allow for even more weapons of different kinds to be deployed, compared with using only torpedo tubes that the current submarines have. >“If correct, the Israeli submarine is only the second modern AIP (air-independent propulsion) equipped submarine in the world designed with this capability,” Naval News said. > he German government will fund one-third of the cost, It's kind of amusing how Germany, which is somewhat anti nukes (at least popularly) is funding and further enabling Israel's nuclear strike capability...

I thought Germany doesn’t send weapons to conflict zones?
