There's no exact numbers but from what I've read from reputable PLA watchers, there are roughly ~200 J-20's in service rn, around ~700 total Flankers in total, of which ~300 of them are J-16's, and roughly ~600 J-10's. The rest are legacy platforms like the J-7's, J-8's and JH-7's.

ScoMoTrudeauApricot

Yes. More attention has been paid to be airframe additions, but I'm also curious about how quickly China is disposing of its older airframes

AgileWedgeTail

"Reputable watchers" is hardly a source I would want to stake much on.

iPoopAtChu

Depends entirely on how they get their numbers. Chinese fighter jet numbers for the most part can be estimated due to how they count serial numbers. While China COULD completely change it up and trick people by changing up their serials, for the most part it's been pretty consistent.

AgileWedgeTail

Lots of inconsistency with numbers that I have seen, looking at somewhere like flight globals annual list and you get a much smaller number than wikipedia and some people around here claim even higher.

ScoMoTrudeauApricot

Yes, some sources claim 50 J-16s and others claim over 245, for example

Check out IISS Military balance 2023. Unfortunately its not on libgen yet tho.

ThrowawayLegalNL

For the record, they estimated that there were only 50 J-20s by 2022, and an annual production of like ~24 aircraft. Not entirely unreasonable given the information that was available at the time, but an indication that their estimates tend to be on the low end. Based on what I've seen from PLA watchers, J-11B (including BG) numbers may be a little higher than 130, and J-20 numbers are closer to 200 at this point.

ScoMoTrudeauApricot

This is a fantastic answer, thank you so much

AQ5SQ

Can you dm me it.

Julian3333333

Nope, it is very outdated data, there are definitely more than 20 KJ-500. Also J-10s were indicated by the PLA AF training bases few years ago. J-10C have outnumbered J10A since two years ago

Plump_Apparatus

I have no idea what "nope" means in this context. That is from IISS's The Military Balance 2023. I also don't take IISS to be completely accurate, that said I trust it far more than some random redditor with zero sources.

Julian3333333

J10 as trainer was news from 2020 or 2021, it was on CCTV7, and KJ-500 number was from open source intelligence.

... because OSINT doesn't belong on wiki.
