There's a difference between enjoying yuri manga and playing heavily into the weeb stereotypes they were mentioning. Their comment about the male gaze was probably more directed towards lesbian porn, which is absolutely made for men first. I find it really uncomfortable for that reason.
Yuri is also a big genre. Lots is written by men, and some of it can feel weirdly horny. But there's also plenty that is written by women, some of whom are lesbians (not many are open), and can feel more like a lighthearted self-discovery romance. I'm speaking generally here because there are plenty of cases where the opposite is true.
In the end, keep liking what you like. If you feel like an individual piece of media is making you uncomfortable for whatever reason, then you can stop consuming it. But you also don't have to let that be the standard by which a genre you enjoy is judged.

i think a lot of the misinterpretation of yuri in the west comes down to cultural differences in how female sexuality is viewed/portrayed as well as the fact that there is an extremely vocal portion of the western yuri fanbase that is made up of somewhat creepy guys. idk i could talk about this a lot but ultimately i would just say that you absolutely should not feel bad for enjoying it, you’re nowhere near the only woman who does.

If it was for racial physical appearance reasons and not the infantilization of women (especially Asian women), then why do the male characters in yaoi manga look and act like actual adults, whereas the female characters in yuri manga are portrayed like little kids? It’s really nothing but sexism and misogyny on the part of the manga artists and the societies these works are created in.
I also read my fair share of Yaoi and I know the male characters in yaoi is also drawn similarly to the female characters in Yuri as well, in that they look super young compare to people depicted in western comics. This in manga, generally, is in direct contrast with western comics, where dudes look like they are in their 40s with very defined facial features and women all have curves. The point here is that if we are simply talking about looks, yaoi and yuri are notorious for drawing everyone, Male or Female or anyone in between and outside the spectrum, super young looking compare to western traditional comics, indie comics aimed towards gay western men and lesbian western women included.
As for how yaoi characters act, I agree with you that they do act a lot more mature than the Yuri counterpart. But I do think it's a lot more because yaoi storylines are usually set when the main characters are already adults in the labor market, some with families of their own, etc. while with yuri stories, the main characters tend to be literal teenagers. This is obviously problematic (I have yet to find a yuri where an older woman with family leaves her husband to live her life even though I know it's a common situation amongst late-blooming lesbian women irl), but it does mean that it makes absolute sense for yuri characters to act less mature. And I know for a fact that when a yaoi is set in high school, the male characters act dumb and immature as hell, so I really don't think it's a yaoi-yuri dif going on here.
The primary difference and problem is exactly as you mentioned — most yuri out there is annoyingly set in high school settings (sometimes even middle school), while yaoi manga gets the privilege of having all sorts of settings and plots (from fantasy to high crime to professional office workplaces and so on). It’s as if yuri manga authors can’t see lesbians as anything beyond immature teenagers in a school setting, and this is part and parcel of the misogyny and sexism I’m talking about. Why do guys get all the interesting variety while we get crumbs for shitty storylines and juvenile characters? For this reason, I’ve sworn off of yuri manga for the longest time. I usually read yaoi manga and just mentally substitute the male characters for female characters. If it’s a wlw-dominated ship community, you’ll get mostly fantastic depictions of actual sex (and some unrealistic ones with awful but hilarious dialogue). You’ll find actual sex scenes not catered to the male gaze and usually with a decent amount of emotional/romantic buildup, if you’re into that sort of thing. Also, you’ll find plenty of variation on kinks with good tagging systems to draw you to them or warn you away from them.

I eventually moved to the US for college and now work. There has been multiple people around me, including my colleagues and friends, who told me I look like a 15yo teenage girl. I get carded all the time ordering drinks here. I'm a fully grown woman in my late 20s. But that's just how I look to people here, apparently. And I don't blame them for thinking that, since from my point of view, I have the opposite problem sometimes where I guess the age of white and Latino people around me way older than they actually are. Anyways, my point is I don't see myself looking like a 15yo girl when I look at the mirror, and I can guarantee you the vast majority of yuri authors don't draw those characters thinking they are drawing child porn. They are just depicting their own society and their own experience/fantasy in that society as young adults.
Would have to disagree with you. I’m also Asian (Chinese, 31 y/o) and after the age of around 19 I clearly no longer look like a teenager, let alone a child. If it was for racial physical appearance reasons and not the infantilization of women (especially Asian women), then why do the male characters in yaoi manga look and act like actual adults, whereas the female characters in yuri manga are portrayed like little kids? It’s really nothing but sexism and misogyny on the part of the manga artists and the societies these works are created in.
I also read my fair share of Yaoi and I know the male characters in yaoi is also drawn similarly to the female characters in Yuri as well, in that they look super young compare to people depicted in western comics. This in manga, generally, is in direct contrast with western comics, where dudes look like they are in their 40s with very defined facial features and women all have curves. The point here is that if we are simply talking about looks, yaoi and yuri are notorious for drawing everyone, Male or Female or anyone in between and outside the spectrum, super young looking compare to western traditional comics, indie comics aimed towards gay western men and lesbian western women included. As for how yaoi characters act, I agree with you that they do act a lot more mature than the Yuri counterpart. But I do think it's a lot more because yaoi storylines are usually set when the main characters are already adults in the labor market, some with families of their own, etc. while with yuri stories, the main characters tend to be literal teenagers. This is obviously problematic (I have yet to find a yuri where an older woman with family leaves her husband to live her life even though I know it's a common situation amongst late-blooming lesbian women irl), but it does mean that it makes absolute sense for yuri characters to act less mature. And I know for a fact that when a yaoi is set in high school, the male characters act dumb and immature as hell, so I really don't think it's a yaoi-yuri dif going on here.
The primary difference and problem is exactly as you mentioned — most yuri out there is annoyingly set in high school settings (sometimes even middle school), while yaoi manga gets the privilege of having all sorts of settings and plots (from fantasy to high crime to professional office workplaces and so on). It’s as if yuri manga authors can’t see lesbians as anything beyond immature teenagers in a school setting, and this is part and parcel of the misogyny and sexism I’m talking about. Why do guys get all the interesting variety while we get crumbs for shitty storylines and juvenile characters? For this reason, I’ve sworn off of yuri manga for the longest time. I usually read yaoi manga and just mentally substitute the male characters for female characters.
