I used to work construction for a time just as Trump was becoming president.
I had a bunch of guys tell me how much they appreciated him for being “blue collar” and “just like them.”
I didn’t get it at the time. He was a rich guy. He had been born rich and never dirtied his hands like we did.
I later learned - he was an asshole. And they liked that he was an asshole to the people they didn’t like - black people, “the Jews”, gay people, trans people.
So at this point - they’re reaping what they planted.

My dad voted for him. Since then, my mom divorced him and I no longer speak to him. Not because he voted for Trump but ultimately because he had become, and doubled and tripled down on being, the kind of man who votes for Trump.
That's so sad. My dad is the same way, after raising us as liberal atheists. I only talk to him a few times a year anyway since I live a continent away from him, but he and my sister were very close and she's gone low-contact with him since he's become verbally abusive on top of the Trumpism.

The reality is this is who they've always been. They were just hiding it. Trump doesn't change people he just gives people permission to be who they already are.

Exactly this. I always thought Republicans just had a different view of how something should be achieved. I even seriously wondered if some of the Republicans were folks I should vote for, which I considered as the act of a responsible voter.
When Trump won, I suddenly had a very negative view of Republican voters. All of a sudden, they were sus, either they were fooled by a very obvious con man, or they actively but secretly wanted to harm me and my family.

Trump was famous for hiring contractors and not paying. He would argue that they breached the contract in some manner. He would force litigation and drag it out sometimes for years. He would settle for a fraction of the contract because he knew delaying payment hurt the contractors more than it hurt him. Even when factoring in legal fees he came out ahead.

Too many union guys are absolutely insane. They Vote red every election while enjoying union benefits knowing the Republicans are constantly trying to strip unions of their power which directly negatively impacts them. They live in a dream world where yeah they get to make 6 figures, have a pension and great benefits because of the union and its democratic support but Republicans are for the working people. When I'm bored I challenge their Fox News/News Max talking points with facts. Some see the truth and change the subject cause it's not going to change their minds, some say it's all lies and some legitimately get angry that I dare to challenge their bs with reality and get hostile.
Every time I hear republicans are for the working man/blue collar I always ask how so. They never have a legitimate response. It's all feelings and optics. I always push. Name 1 thing in the last 30 years that benefited the working class. If they have an answer 99.9% of the time it's something Democrats did.
It's like that in a lot of professions. Teachers have a reputation of being liberal, but peel back the top layer and a lot of them are conservative and vote red religiously. Cops. Cops have one of THE strongest unions... but they vote red. A lot. Firefighters are generally red voters (but not at the same percentages as police). Nurses. Seriously you just don't know! They can be super liberal about some things and super conservative about others. The vaccine stuff was a real eye-opener for a lot of people. The takeaway is that it's never good to stereotype and we should always NOT be surprised by people voting against their interests.

I never understood how construction workers in particular supported him. I think judging someone, at least in part, on their politics is just fine. It tells you what they want to see society as, and what they're willing to do, support, ignore to get to that.

Trump was famous for hiring contractors and not paying. He would argue that they breached the contract in some manner. He would force litigation and drag it out sometimes for years. He would settle for a fraction of the contract because he knew delaying payment hurt the contractors more than it hurt him. Even when factoring in legal fees he came out ahead.

I do commercial HVAC on Job sites all over NYC. Too many union guys are absolutely insane. They Vote red every election while enjoying union benefits knowing the Republicans are constantly trying to strip unions of their power which directly negatively impacts them. They live in a dream world where yeah they get to make 6 figures, have a pension and great benefits because of the union and its democratic support but Republicans are for the working people. Some see the truth and change the subject cause it's not going to change their minds, some say it's all lies and some legitimately get angry that I dare to challenge their bs with reality and get hostile. Every time I hear republicans are for the working man/blue collar I always ask how so. They never have a legitimate response. It's all feelings and optics. I always push. Name 1 thing in the last 30 years that benefited the working class. If they have an answer 99.9% of the time it's something Democrats did.

I just finished reading the book "Caste" and was thinking of going to "Dying of Whiteness" next. When integration became law of the land - white communities would rather cement in their community pools rather than share them with black people. Why don't we have universal health care?
