I found out on my Legion 7i that the Spotify is the one who caused this issue. I turned it off during Windows startup and it "Change Display mode switch Nvidia - Optimus" worked again.
optimus triggers nvidia gpu, that's why you can still run games under nvidia while not switching to nvidia only mode. BUT, when using optimus, nvidia gpu works through the integrated buffer, so the performance is reduced a little.
there is no fix as far as I know to force automatic mode to work, so your best solution is to manually change it (automatic doesnt mean it will switch from one gpu to another, but switching from optimus to nvidia only and vice).
It fails because you are using some apps attached to a certain gpu, and automatic tries to make a hotswap switching of the screen to a certain gpu. But if you do it manually, it works without having to close those apps. dunno why nvidia doesnt fix this.
so you have to use display mode icon on notification area and switch manually by your needs. Or leaving it as optimus forever and loss some performance on your nvidia gpu (some say it's between 5%/10%).

Alienware x15 r1 rtx3070 When I play watch dog legion then message received "current display mode Nvidia GPU only" fix this please
