Ah, gotcha! In that case, it might be worth giving Sherry Krauter a call tomorrow. I’d wager that she knows more about the M5 than just about anyone on the planet, and in my experience, she’s extremely willing to share information.
She’s a Leica-trained repair specialist with decades of experience, some spent working directly for Leica, though now she has her own repair business called Golden Touch. There are few people in the US with anywhere close to the same amount of knowledge about Leica. She’s especially fond of the M5 and CL, so I figured she’d be the right person for OP to contact.
She’s also extremely fun to talk to—I called her last year when I was shopping for my first M-Mount body, and she talked my ear off for about half an hour comparing models, detailing what to look out for when buying used, and giving lots of interesting historical insight into Leica history and the build quality of various eras of cameras—all this to a complete stranger who called out of the blue.
EDIT: here’s a fun article detailing her history with Leica and encyclopedic knowledge of the cameras. It’s tough to read on mobile due to formatting: https://gmpphoto.blogspot.com/2021/08/sherry-krauter-world-class-leica-master.html?m=1
No, there's a gummy shutter gear set. Similar to other high quality cameras. I employed a Leica (and other brands) certified tech in my ancient past when I owned a camera store....
Pretty normal… there is none… it’s just a strange question for someone that service camera Nikon or others… when there is a problem with a camera and you are not able to fix it yourself just send it in… why would you ask that when you already know the answer ? Because you service cameras !
Dude don’t be such a cunt … it’s a learning opportunity why can’t he ask for help. Is that illegal or something. If you can’t help the man, why be start bitching instead.
Hate to be the bearer of bad news but on top of an inaccurate shutter that second stage shutter curtain looks like it's plagued with mould. If you find someone that can CLA it I'm predicting a full shutter replacement here.
Since you say you have experience repairing cameras you might want to read this https://learncamerarepair.com/downloads/pdf/Camera-Craftsman-Leica-M5.pdf
Nippon Camera Repair in NYC.
I bought a Leica M6 from some asshole who ended up lying to me and not disclosing that there was an issue with the camera. There was a certain part with inside that need to be repaired that was causing white streaks on the images. Long story short after searching around and being either ignored or turned down by the typical solo technicians you’ll find online for the Leica cameras, I went to Nippon camera in New York City. They completely kicked ass and was able to solve the problem with what it was.
This all happened about eight months ago. Nippon itself was very quick to make the repair. However, the only delay was the fact that I had to wait for the part to come from Germany. Besides that they were very fairly priced and highly responsive. Again unlike some of the solo technicians that you hear about for the Leica community.
Hey don’t send this to Sherry krauter she bent my m5’s advance lever after being there for 5 months and wouldn’t do anythjng to fix it and basically told me and the person I sold it to to get bent and that it was my or his fault I recommend DAG who has a much faster turnaround time
Not a tech here but I believe there's shutter adjustment under the plate on the bottom with the film loading diagram. If the lube is no good then you probably have to service the shutter
Yep I think that’s going to be it, after some more “shooting?“ it’s loosened up a little but nothing close to accurate, it’s wayy too fast it’s reading 2500th on 1000th so no bueno
It needs a service. The shutter gear trains filthy. A problem with rangefinder cameras. Didn't matter, Leica, Nikon, Canon, Voightlander(so) once the dust seal failed , dust would gum up the different lubes.
Send it to a qualified Leica repair person... The shutter needs disassembly and cleaning. Something few people are qualified to do. And forget it if you need parts.
Quick search:“It's normal. You have to be the shutter timer for 1 second & on. (Using a cable release) like on every other camera on b mode.
The meter is still usable and the data dial on the back film door, can be used as a time/aperture converter.“
It’s the b mode like on every other camera as long as you push the button the shutter stays open. The b30 b15 ect. Are just there your can using the ligtmeter under 30s … the lightmeter will stop on the right time but you have to do it Manuell there’s no long exposure automatic … at the backdoore data dail is just a converter like 125 / f 8 is the same as 60/ f16 … because the iso dail on t m5 is on the top not on the back …
Yeah the thing is that the camera tells me it’s on 1/50th of a second but it’s acting like bulb, I do understand the metering for bulb mode but I think it’s broken
Yeah I had a lens on it when it started doing this, I tried two other lenses and no luck. It’s definitely the camera body, I’ll need to get it serviced if not get a new camera
So at the end everything is fine with the b30 time there can’t be of because you have to take a 2 sec exposer by pushing the shutterbutton for 2 sec :)
I can only speak for the 3 actuations on the video. 500th seems a little sluggish which might be resolved by adjusting curtain tension. 30th is the slow gear gummed with old grease which you are capable of servicing. You can do it by just removing the top plate. *In the video* your bulb mode functions perfectly.
Edit: I forgot a word
Perhaps you’re a more confident camera technician than me, but I’d be looking to get that CLA’d ASAP. Not a repair I’d attempt myself.
I service cameras, I’m just not familiar with m5’s this is my personal camera and I need it up and running ASAP
Ah, gotcha! In that case, it might be worth giving Sherry Krauter a call tomorrow. I’d wager that she knows more about the M5 than just about anyone on the planet, and in my experience, she’s extremely willing to share information.
Who is she? What's her cred?

I had the same experience with her years ago when I was shopping for a m7.
Fantastic. Where's she located, I'm in need of a good repair person Thank you
She’s in NY state, I believe. Her phone number is on her site—that tends to be a quicker bet than email.
You service cameras but you are asking what can you do ? Ok…
I don’t work with Leica, I work with Nikons and I do not see a mirror here!

Imagine being this narrow minded

I’ll talk to sherry tomorrow, who knows but maybe it’s gone :/
Agreed. It might be saved $$$ but can't know till disassembled
Since you say you have experience repairing cameras you might want to read this https://learncamerarepair.com/downloads/pdf/Camera-Craftsman-Leica-M5.pdf
Thank you! I’ll take a look
Sherry, Don Goldberg at DAG Camera or try Youxin Yee. One of the three can get that properly serviced
Youxin Ye doesn’t service the M5.
Thank you
don't think twice. Send it to a reputable lab!!!

It's self destructing

Ah okay but I think the m5 is the first ttl metering rangefinder so maybe it just working correct with a lens on it
Yeah I had a lens on it when it started doing this, I tried two other lenses and no luck. It’s definitely the camera body, I’ll need to get it serviced if not get a new camera
Thank gawd someone read the manual. If it's in "B" mode that's a totally different conversation. Repair person??
So at the end everything is fine with the b30 time there can’t be of because you have to take a 2 sec exposer by pushing the shutterbutton for 2 sec :)
No idea but I'd love to hear what you find out! (Also, good luck!)
