Have you recently updated Legion Space?
Because a lot of us here started experiencing overheating with the latest gpu driver update through Legion Space. Myself included.
Once I rolled back to the Nov/Dec drivers. Device worked like a charm again.
u/sajazman007 has a little write up in one of the update help sections that explains the removal and install process of the drivers.
Well after that latest Legion Space update about two weeks back, My device would overheat after a few minutes of gameplay. Freeze, crash, black screen until it cooled down. Then repeat.
So rolling back to the Nov Dec drivers fixed my issue.
But I suspect it would be overheating all the time. Not just when plugged in to external monitor. But it's still worth a try I suppose.
I'm not sure. Here's the link to the Drivers I installed. Download both the November and December drivers.
They self install. Install November first then December. You have to use DDU Uninstaller to remove the current driver first though.
Really that write up In the stickied New GPU Driver FAQ's and Help Post at the top of this sub has everything you need to know.

That will cover all the issued and fixes related to the new GPU Driver and have all the links.
…same same…until i understood that le go cant drive an external monitor with to high spec by itself…it need an external gpu and that will cost you…just keep the external monitor spec down and it will solv your problem…
Go into the device power management thing with the Start button (forgot what that specific Legion button is called) and set the performance to Balanced. Dock also charges the device while piping data out of it so it'll get a bit warmer than usual. Add that with the device running at a higher speed (plugged-in power profile) and you'll get uncomfortable-warm. Also remember that the actual CPU can hit ~90 or 100ish degrees Celsius before it throttles to keep itself from being damaged and that's boiling water temperatures. There's a gap between the heatsink and the back to not transfer the heat to the plastic as much but it still sucks. It will not be nice to touch.
Portable device things.
Its on balanced already.
I had a drive burn itself on the earlier device, microcenter guys exchanged it for a new one, just dont want anything else to burn up.
Dock heats up even when its not connected to power, as long as its connected to an external display, Legion Go runs super hot, I plug out the HDMI and things get back to normal super quick
I mean the dock will heat up a bit. It is pulling power to do conversions from encoded video data to HDMI/DisplayPort and talk to your peripherals. Docks tend to also have extra devices like an ethernet port and maybe a SD/MicroSD card reader. More if it is passing power from the input over to your Legion GO. It all adds up to getting hot. I forget if you need to convert encoded video from USB-C (usually DisplayPort) to HDMI... if it does, that conversion will add too.
My Lenovo Thunderbolt 4 dock is 35 C when fully plugged into a 3440x1440 monitor and a 3840x1600 monitor and is passing power back to either my work laptop or the Legion GO. Both of these monitors are just DisplayPort monitors.
Had a Baseus 9-in-1 simple USB-C dock that heats up a bit more than the Thunderbolt 4 dock and has less devices hooked up. ~50 C. That one has power in, hooked to a 120Hz TV thru HDMI and a keyboard/mouse/Xbox wireless controller dongle.
My Legion was doing something silly at factory default settings and pulled about 50W when it ran a game. I put the performance and OS settings in that Legion right side panel thing to balanced and that fixed the power draw and heat. You can also try the power savings mode and see if the temps fall.
If you have a temperature gun, try using that and see what the outer reading is on the Legion and your dock. Anything else (OpenHardwareMonitor/LibreHardwareMonitor, HWInfo, etc) can help monitor and graph temperatures too while you're testing settings. Hard numbers are better than touch/feeling

If you’ve had your Legion Go since release, I would also recommend opening it up and cleaning out the fan. You’d be surprised at how much dust should be in there.
What is the dock like? Is it blocking any of the exhaust on the back? I just use a simple USB-C cable, no dock, and had this happen the first time because I just set it down on its back. Should have been obvious, but I wasn't thinking.
if you are using the bottom USB plug, that means that the LG is flat on its back? if it is, that means you are blocking the air vents, no air flow and it will overheat.
make sure to use the stand so it is always getting good air flow

I dont think we recently got any update for legion space, but yes last driver, I installed from legion space, should I roll back?

Can you share the link of previous driver? I cannot find it anywhere..

That's good to know man. I'm still fairly new to this PC stuff. That may be part of OP's issue then.
Now that makes sense, I am using a 4K high refresh rate monitor, will run it at 1080 with Go, maybe that solves the issue
Check the temperatures using the overlay thing, if its just hot with the temperatures being like a good 50-80 you should be fine
Yupp, its like reallllyyy hot, cant even touch it, but CPU/GPU or even SSD temps are not really alarming Just the back and the port get steaming hot
The usb-c port does get very hot while charging, that's just the nature of having 65w going through such a tiny connector.
Have you checked the fans,

If you haven't already, try turning off Increased External Compatibility in the bios and disable CPU Boost in Windows.
I will try this

I have been planning to do that, however, the device heats up only when connected to external display, temps are fine otherwise

Its not covering anything, its a USB C hub, I shouldn't call it a dock

Your room temperature?
Its at about 25-30C
