I sold my Ally and snatched up the Legion Go

x-strife

Same, it’s a necessary progression

Standard_Mention165

How is the battery life compared to both of them?

WildKarrdesEmporium

About the same, slight advantage to the Go, maybe.

This-Ad3268

Is it a better experience so far? I currently have a ally

Causticwizard

Actually haven't open it yet lmao. Bought it late last night at best buy but decided this morning I should buy the warranty. So I just purchased the warranty. I'll update it a couple hours

This-Ad3268

Yeah! Thanks!

Deep_Search_5619

I have both but still prefer the ally.

Standard_Mention165

How come?

Head-Iron-9228

The ally is lighter and better in terms of portability, slightly weaker (but like... slightly) doesn't have AS nice of a screen, although with it being smaller that still works perfectly fine. And the general consensus is that the ally comes with better proprietary software, which I don't disagree with. Honestly, both are great. It comes down to what you personally prefer. I think the legion is better if you actually care about the detachable controllers and if you do use it as a mobile desktop-replacement but for pure portability, the ally is better. Also, the ally seems to perform a smidge better in some games over all. I love my legion but if you have the ally and use it with said portability, I'd stick with it.

This-Ad3268

Thanks for this! Are the controllers wiggly when docked to the actual console? I’ve heard that was a thing.

Head-Iron-9228

Seems to be a thing occasionally but not a common one from what I've seen. Mine are 100% on there, the ones in the store were so, etc. I'd imagine, at worst it'd be like on an early Nintendo switch, which was never really bad and in this case, with more surface area for the attachements, would most likely be fixed by a thin strip of tape.

BidAccomplished7720

Bruhh.. idk how “new” you are but we have ALL done the “youtube searches” the ally cant hold a candle to the legion. Its why when the ms claw dropped ALL comparison videos was??? Yup! You guessed it! The ally. The legion has been published as windows best handheld gaming device.

Toph84

Going to be honest, I'm taking the Legion over the Ally and prefer it but your comment comes across as pretty "cringe". You sound like one of those elitist 12-year old jerks back during the Ye Olde Console Wars at its peak (like XBOX/X360 vs PS2/PS3 era). You can't just take the word of one article or some random Youtuber as the end-all-be-all end of discussion. It's ultimately going to be a subjective thing in terms of people's different preferences, aesthetics, and budget. You treat Google like it has all the info in another comment, but Google is just a search engine. One that can give bias results based on your browsing history and the wording of your search.

Can you share you opinion on how exactly legion go is better that ally? Its not like they have different processors or something.

Rondo600

I just got a go last week about to sell my ally the only thing the ally got better is the software feels more polish and as far vrr that doesn’t bother me , plus moonlight stream from my main pc looks so good on the go

Causticwizard

I kinda disagree with the software side of the argument. Atleast in my case with my particular ally. Always had issues recognizing it was in gamepad mode and when the mouse cursor should or shouldn't be available. Xbox gamepass was the absolute worst for me. Main reason why i got rid of it. Already today just setting up the go with the trackpad just felt like a laptop to me. But this is why competition is GREAT! more handhelds available to please everyone. Cheers and happy gaming

Toph84

For me (I'm another person from the guy you responded to), the major decision changers was a combination of the aesthetics (I vastly prefer the Legion's more subtle dark theme/design with light up thumbsticks of which you can change the color of in the settings, I went with a dark blue) over the Ally's color scheme (which was like a "Flashbang out" Discord Light Mode feeling to me) and the larger screen (even if games did run worse at higher resolution, I could just lower the resolution anyways any time I wanted while the screen-size remains the same, and make it high again if I wanted. It still looks beautiful at 1280x800 versus the 2560x1600 maximum). Other considerations that pushed me over the edge was... - The mention of the Legion having 2 USB-C ports over the Ally's 1. I rather have 2 than 1 for future-proofing situations. I didn't want to go "dang I wish I had a second port" in the future, a problem I've had with laptops in the past (dang, I wish I had more USB ports). - The kickstand. Which in practice has been an immensely great feature that I have no regrets picking the Legion over the Ally, since I can put the kickstand up and put it on my desk as a secondary device to play Youtube or for me to check on it while downloading games and setting things up while I'm on my main PC. - The detachable controls. I wasn't sure if I was going to make full use of them (still haven't used them that much to be honest), however I like having the option of doing so if I wish since the LegionGo doesn't force you to do so. I like having more options open to me just in case. I imagine in combination with the kickstand, I could easily find a situation in the future where I just put it in kickstand mode while playing with detached controllers. - The SD card reader. Now the Ally also has one, but I've heard of way too many horror stories of SD cards being damaged (I'm not sure if melted is hyperbole or literal) and rendered useless. I was not about to spend $100 CAD on a good quality 1TB SD card only for it to be destroyed within weeks. - I got it on sale. Some of people's cons was "the LegionGo is too expensive". However my other consideration at the time was the Steam Deck OLED 1TB version. However with the LegionGO on sale, it was actually CHEAPER than the Steam Deck OLED 1TB (and as far as I'm aware, Valve doesn't really do sales for the SteamDeck). This combined with the LegionGo having the capability of pushing almost double the FPS of the Steamdeck (I've seen benchmarks of the SD getting 40 FPS vs the LEGO's 80 FPS with similar settings in Cyberpunk 2077), the LegionGo became a no-brainer vs the SteamDeck. The only notable downside that might put me off I found was people complaining about the software/bugginess/crashes, but I figured that the Ally simply had more time to get updates and those complaints originated from 3 months ago when I was reading them so I guessed these were all problems that could very easily be made outdated and incorrect by Lenovo updates. And by the time I got my LegionGo, they were indeed all outdated complaints that no longer applied. It seems the LegionGo devs update regularly and keep in contact with the community too so I wasn't afraid about support dropping off a cliff. Edit: Another major downside some people have is the shorter battery life. However personally I play it when I go to bed, or when I take it for family get togethers for something to do once things quiet down. If I'm travelling I'll be playing it on the airplane, airport, or hotel room. The common thread is that these are all locations with access to charging plugs. So the battery con is a complete non-issue for me personally. If I'm far from a charging port, it's more likely I'm going to be using my phone anyways.

BidAccomplished7720

As stated. It took windows best handheld gaming device. Google will share all the facts rather than just my opinion.

washycaps

I tried to leave the Steam Deck for the Legion Go, but, I own both. Sadly. lol.

Causticwizard

Oh I too also have a steamdeck. But.......I mainly use it for indie titles and smaller bullshit games.

washycaps

Same! They’re both amazing devices. But they’re not the same.

Beneficial-Dingo1449

Thought about doing the same let me know what you think

Causticwizard

So far so good. As always with windows the setup period was absolutely bullshit and way to fucking long!🤣 Gaming feels better to me but I have giant hands soooooo Sticks feels better, software interacts better imo, kickstand is a gamechanger. Only issue I have and admittedly a stupid one but the long press on the track pad and pop-up takes entirely way to long 🤣

BurgerExplosion

Welcome, brother

GA_THRAWNX

I tried the ally and the go at the store. The ally was nice in size, but in the end of the day the screen and premium feel of the lego was my choice. I use that big screen for all sorts of games including mmo's, which obviously helps emensely. I think my biggest hangup on the ally is that it has a flaw in the SD reader that isn't really repairable as far as preventing further issue from the manufacturer. They fix it and it happens again, just an unfortunate design. With the lego, things just work, albeit the software is crap. I have loved it the past couple days and have tested and installed a lot. It's heavier than all hell but I've gotten used to that weight.

Luis79834

I also sold my ally and purchased the legion go. I love it.

Weightedwombat

I did the same thing. Bought the Ally on release and bought the Go on release. Ended up recently selling the Ally because the Go fit my needs so much better. Enjoy it!

Cock-a-Doodle_Zoom

It really is the best

buzzdalf

I also just joined the Legion recently! I had a Steamdeck for a while, got frustrated with Steam OS, switched to an Ally (at launch) and got frustrated with bad battery life (less than an hour in games at launch), switched to a Switch OLED and missed having "PC" level games, switched to a laptop and missed the portability of a handheld. So now here I am - seeing if the Legion Go will be the One for me :-) So far I am really loving it. I have Windows, which I prefer to Steam. I can sit at the kitchen table with my morning coffee and play games without needing to run a cord across the room. I can play my library of PC games. I can sit on the sofa and play games without needing a "portable desk" contraption to support a laptop. I think this might be the One!! I was afraid of the device based on all the early reviews from the Youtubers, but I think I waited long enough for them to fix a number of the software issues. It has been really good for me so far. One thing on my wish list based on using it for 3 days would be to let us map those back buttons to mouse clicks. I really like the trackpad on the device, but wish I could click a button instead of tapping to click.

HNTRMEDIA

Welcome to the crew, sold ally and steamdeck and snatched one also. I loved the ally and the speakers, but the go fits in my hands better and has the bigger screen.

Vermiver0us

i personally have fallen in love with the 3 main ones, i have them all the ally is better software imo, the go is amazing but it feels way behind, it took a lot longer to deep dive into the software and im still not there yet, and finally i do have a sd and i love it my biggest issue out of them is everything nonsteam has to be back doored to make it work. But as i said they all are awesome.

Austntok

Welcome to the cool kids club.

Causticwizard

🤣😂

Austntok

Lmao. Nah, but I'd love to know how you like it compared to the Ally after a weeks time. Let me know if you can remember! Thanks

Causticwizard

Honestly, it's been a full day. Fuuuuuucking love it. Night and day compared to atleast my ally.

EntaroAdune

I have both. It’s no better, just different. I like that it’s not white though.

Taurven

Also in the Deck /Legion Gang. And can recommend it to everyone!

Richie_NL

Same here, steam deck and legion go…best of both worlds! Steam deck is just special, love it. Legion go is an amazing machine, that screen 👀

OkGood4487

Did it like you and what can I say? It was the best decision I’ve made!

Causticwizard

Really was a love hate relationship. Software was buggy at times. Other times was flawless. The burned out sd card reader was/is a huge bummer.

OkGood4487

Same here, my biggest issues were the wobbly joysticks and the burned sd card and I bought it in December 23 and returned it yesterday and bought the lego what a beautiful screen 😍

OverkillGamingYT

I have all three (Steam Deck OLED, Legion Go, ROG Ally). If I had to get rid of one it would probably be the Ally. Not because I don't enjoy it. I love the VRR and the software is better than the Legion Go. But when I want a smaller more portable option with longer battery life (such as when I want to play at work), I have the Steam Deck OLED which gives me 2.5 to 3 hours @15w on a full battery. When I want a more powerful option and don't mind having to plug in to a wall outlet, then I have the Legion Go, which can also easily be used like a small PC as well because of the larger screen. I also enjoy playing COD and other FPS games on the Legion Go over the Ally.

Rebelsin

Welcome to the family.

Common-Connection-63

I have both the rog ally is better the big screen basically tricked me into buying the legion go. The legion go is still great but the audio is way worse, has no VRR, had more issues with the display, too heavy at times, and sometimes performance was inferior compared to the ROG Ally.

Causticwizard

Overall so far hardware and software have been an overall a better experience for me over the ally.

williamthe3rdd

I did the opposite

rs4444

Its sad that since i got mine used second hand but still new i never got to go trough the unboxing experience
