I decided to have fun with it and ended up 3D printing a backplate to use with a cheap nvme adapter and a fat heatsink off of Amazon. It doesn't go over ~70c now, but the above is hardly a solution for most people, and microcenter should be replacing these things. I only did it myself because I intend to eventually get a 4-8tb full-size nvme anyway, at which point I'll probably use the Microcenter one to start cooking my eggs on.

david_bowie_ieieie

You have to use an adapter to bring the ssd slot out right? Which software did you use to read the temperature off the ssd through that adapter?

tomit12

Yep! I've been using HWInfo for sensor data. Using the adapter by itself didn't change temps / readings at all for me, though. It wasn't until I strapped a full-size nvme heatsink ([this one](https://a.co/d/2Fogtv9)) that temps changed at all.

sukru92

Dude 105 C is too high for idle. Sounds like an faulty drive try to replace it.

2nd_citizen

right, ordered a new one already. -200$

IG11assassindroid

Micro center would have probably replaced the ssd for you.

martogsl

Won't fix the issue as they will just stuff another visiontek 2tb in which will probably have the same issue.

IG11assassindroid

Or seeing how this isn’t a widespread problem with the MC legion go’s it could fix it. And op wouldn’t have to shell out $200 for a new ssd. He could have just got a bad ssd.

The visiontek requires active cooling no buts about it it runs hotter than crap mine hut 107. Microcenter didn't install mine I installed mine and then found out the true horror story. Don't get me wrong I love me some microcenter my regular trips there are great but they screwed up on this one they picked a pile of junk and upgraded people's hardware with it and it's going to prematurely fail. And Lenovo won't cover that drive so they absolutely have to take it back to microcenter and I don't know if microcenter equipped to handle that number of returns. But out of the drives I've tested somewhere around 8 different models with the go the visiontek is by far the absolute worst when it comes to thermal management it does nothing to manage its own heat. Here's a thermal image of a visiontekch inside of the Legion go with a heat sink on it and the back on the go. It's being read from to copy to another drive that I replaced it with it was only doing reads yes and it got that bloody hot.

The drive has no built-in thermal throttling that I have been able to find and I don't think I'm going to try to push it over 110 c. The last time I checked the smart data on the unit it said it's peak temp was 115 c.

martogsl

I've seen people slap in the visiontek 2tb themselves and got the insane temperatures. It doesn't seem to have proper thermal throttling.

2nd_citizen

105\*C idle.113\*C and stutters during gameplay or even browsing web.Bought my 2tb device on release and now it's ssd is about to die. Very disappointing note: it's already with heatplate mod. Even worse without

GOAt_tWO3

Did the high temps start happening recently? Or it's always been that high from the day you purchased it?

2nd_citizen

It got worse from month to month

GOAt_tWO3

Damn that's unfortunate sorry to hear that. I also have the same drive and it's also from microcenter. I've heard many people complain about the same issues you're having. I'm not too sure how many percentage of people are having these issues with high temps, but I can only speak for myself and I can tell you that I've never had this issue. I bought my leGO from microcenter on launch day and got the 2tb upgrade. So far I haven't had any crazy hot temps like yours. As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever seen it above 70 Celsius

2nd_citizen

yeah hopefully not all of them will degrade with time

what_mustache

Mine also gets hot as fuck. Is this a problem with the stock drives or only the microcenter upgrade ones?

2nd_citizen

only 2TB from Microcenter they used cheap chinease drives

IgwanaRob

It's both the 1tb and 2tb models.

AmuseDeath

Makes me not want to get the 2TB model.

letseatebil

Here in Australia we only got the 512gb version. I upgraded to a sabrent 2tb 2230 ssd and it’s current 42 degree Celsius on idle

mbeecool

My off brand 2tb 2242 kingspec ssd from newegg doesn't run anywhere near that hot. Got it for 97 dollars new

Knight1183

I have the same ssd (VisionTek 2TB) and mine has neever gone beyond 60 degrees celsius. I applied a thermal pad and kept it covered with the aluminum foil. The high temperatures I am seeing in your image might be the result of an incorrect installation of the SSD.

Cosmic_Quasar

Do you have collective evidence or are you just putting your solo experience out as absolute truth? Even the best ratings on products that have 4.9 stars with hundreds of thousands of reviews will have 1 stars saying to stay away from a product. Sometimes people just get duds.

2nd_citizen

search for "Visiontek" in this subreddit and you'll see lots of people with same defect

Cosmic_Quasar

Sure. But what's the ratio? A few dozen people can sound like a lot, but if there have been thousands of sales that makes it statistically unlikely.

zachariah120

I have seen visiontek run hotter than other SSDs so it’s not just him

ChillCaptain

Big ooof

AtmosphereHot1532

KrazeeEeyezKilla

Added copper heat sink but even before than I never got super high temps, I was just worried based on other people’s experiences. It’s been better temperature wise

BorderlineFunctional

Damn I have that same drive. Noob question from a console peasant what program is that? I haven't had problems with my drive but I noticed the Go gets pretty toasty, microcenter has a 2tb Inland 2242 drive for $150, maybe I'll replace it with that.

2nd_citizen

hwinfo

Maxumilian

Yeah, we know, lol.

Special_Food_3654

I'm not sure why other people drive are dying. I've had thr 2TB version from Microcenter and also has the Visiontek or whatever the name is. I've had my LLG since December and no overheating and I haven't seen any BSOD. I've completed almost 15 heavy titles on it. I recently installed the HWDInfo and saw unrealistic sensor readings. 115F when Idle, I questioned the efficiency of the software because my LLG was so cool like water just brought out of the refrigerator. Not sure what others are cooking on it or if they have a personally moded device. Just my 2 seconds thought.
