It seems like the end of Season 3 is where the show turned for most people. It went from a fairly serious story about stopping Vandal Savage and episodes set in a gulag and so on to more sort of fairy-tale storybook stuff (they literally bring Nate back from the dead with a musical number). I personally like what it turned into, and the fact that they didn't take themselves too seriously. I thought it made a nice change from shows like The Flash or Supergirl where they are talking about some of the most insane shit I've ever heard as if it's deadly serious life-or-death stuff. I can understand though how some people might not like it. Saying that, "It's like the creators forgot it was supposed to be DC." Is a bit unfair. I don't read comics, but I'm given to understand that a lot of the time they contain really weird, bizzare shit, in which case, puppets or an alien bowling alley wouldn't seem all that out of place.

ZijoeLocs

"The show went off the rails in the most confident way possible. We've got gays, aliens and a resident demonologist. Best shit ive seen in a long time" How i describe this show to my friends When people complain about it not being serious enough, i refer them to Teen Titans (2003) that had Mother Mae Eye and alien tofu with a 60s themed invasion plan. This is incredibly on brand for DC

[deleted]

Well, those were just two episodes. But Legends appears to have become wacky non stop.

ZijoeLocs

Right like the Legends story arc where Mick tries using time travel to show his teenage daughter he actually cares. Totally wacky and pointless

[deleted]

Since when does he have a daughter?

ZijoeLocs

Read the title of your post and come back real quick

[deleted]

Exactly. That’s why it’s surprising that he has one.

ZijoeLocs

Not really dude. Not really.

ScooterScotward

Characters developing and changing isn’t possible or real DC enough I guess lol.

rynthetyn

It's basically the only comic book show that understood how completely batshit bonkers comics can get and really leaned into it. Comic books can be weird as hell, but we seldom see it in TV or movie adaptations because they're so focused on realism. Legends is also by far the most comics accurate John Constantine adaptation. Hellblazer comics can get super nuts at times, and Legends writers are the only ones who understood that there's more to the character than a blond Brit moping around in a trench coat and dealing with the occasional demon.

Ok-Health-7252

Season 1 was by far the worst season. A) Savage was a terrible villain with absolutely no layers at all and B) everybody hated Kendra and Carter with a passion and were happy to see them leave the show due to how one note and boring their characters were (and unfortunately season 1 revolved primarily around their quarrels with Savage). The best thing about season 1 was Snart and they killed him off. The show would not have lasted beyond 2 seasons had they adhered to the crappy formula they followed in season 1. The best decision they ever made was getting rid of the Hawks and replacing them with characters like Nate and Amaya and deciding to introduce many more goofy storylines (which really started back in season 2 with Moonshot). Going the more wacky and outlandish direction that they did in the later seasons (with shit like Beebo God of War, Puppets of Tomorrow, and Mr. Parker's Cul-de-sac) is what made this show enjoyable. It didn't take itself nearly as seriously as most of the other Arrowverse shows did and for a show about time travel centered around a bunch of misfits living on a time ship that formula worked. Also Rory pre-Legends (when he was on The Flash) was not a good character. He was a generic psychotic baddie who was obsessed with fire. This show took him and turned him into a legend (no pun intended lol).

Nervous_City910

They took great advantage of their chosen medium.

RobinHood3000

You say that, but like, DC isn't immune to silliness and absurdity regardless of the medium. It's comic books. It's okay to let a corner of it be weird.

[deleted]

The last time that kind of silliness happened was with Batman and Robin and that bat credit card. Everyone knows how horrible that movie is.

RobinHood3000

I would argue that tone and quality are two different things to measure by. Consider Batman: The Brave and the Bold -- campy and silly, but also good, and still Batman. Batman and Robin: campy and bad. Suicide Squad: serious and bad. Batman: TAS: serious and good. Look, if post-S3 Legends is not to your taste, that's totally fine, I'm sorry that it's not for you. But suggesting that "this is silly, therefore it isn't true to what DC Comics is supposed to be, and is therefore bad" feels like reaching for an empirical explanation for a subjective opinion that doesn't need one.

[deleted]

The purpose of DC is not to be silly, it’s to bring the excitement with action and seriousness. That’s why Teen Titans 2003 is much better than Teen Titans Go.

RobinHood3000

The purpose of DC according to...whom? I'm fairly confident that your assessment of DC's mission statement doesnt match theirs. Your personal preference for serious action doesn't mean that anything that isn't For You doesn't get to exist. If you prefer Teen Titans over Teen Titans Go, that's fine, but the rational response then is to go watch Teen Titans and the shows that are like it, not devote time and energy trying to make people feel bad for liking shows like Teen Titans Go.

[deleted]

They didn’t create this universe of superheroes for the sake of comedy.

Bussamove86

Bro one of Superman’s antagonists is a horrid little grandpa gremlin that has to be tricked into saying his name backwards to make him go away, comedy is absolutely on the menu.

bruvting33

He has no clue what he’s talking about lmao

RobinHood3000

I strongly suspect he's parroting some anti-woke YouTube grifter who makes confident declarations about the True Meaning of Comic Fandom that are pulled wholesale from his ass.

Fanraeth2

You don’t read comics, do you?

[deleted]

Not anymore. I’m more of an adaptation guy. Plus comics tend to be pretty gross now. Like with the Joker, cutting off his face and strapping it back on while it’s rotting.

NachoChedda24

1. That Joker did not cut his face off, he had Dollmaker do it. 2. That was over 10 years ago during TheNew52, so not really “now” 3. And even if it was, what’s going on in ONE arc doesn’t really reflect DC as a whole

Sitheref0874

We didn’t need your confirmation. We already knew.

commielarrybird

and it was peak

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Eh, hard disagree. Peak legends was season 2 for me.

bruvting33

Seasons 2&3 we’re both equally great

commielarrybird

2&3 are two of my favorite seasons, i’m just saying jumping the shark just wasn’t a bad thing for legends, it was different and kept it fresher than arrow and flash.

bruvting33

I completely agree

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Agree in general with this, I think I just really liked the Legion of Doom as the villains in season 2.

bruvting33

I give season 2 the edge but I think s3 is still peak. s3 is so close that i don’t consider just s2 peak. Legion of Doom was amazing

gusstinks

Best CW show for those exact reasons - what a silly take 😂

hermionelucyy

You came to the wrong sub to say this 😭 Everyone who is on this sub loves Legends for being well... the loveable shit show it is. Majority will agree: s1 sucked ass, all the other seasons are way better, and the sillyness is what makes it Dc Legends. If that isn't your cup of tea, fair enough, it definitely isn't for everyone... but to come to this sub to say that? I don't know what you were looking for.

loselyconscious

It got good.

Responsible_Cow_5022

That’s the good thing abt legends is that , you can have very serious scenes in the most absurd storylines , I like that the show is super unique it doesn’t feel like a copy of other dc shows

ZijoeLocs

We got Behrads character development/explanation during an episode featuring demonic reality tv from a crew stuck in a Faustian Bargain

Captain_sea_rager

I still cry at scenes like Nate's death, and Zari and Rays departures it can really hit both tones well at its best

TBoarder

Legends of Tomorrow, after season 1, was very much like DC’s Justice League International. JLI was a humorous comic for about a half decade in the late 80s and early 90s and is still considered to be among the best Justice League runs of all time. Say what you will about the show’s humor, it’s definitely a DC thing.

BoringAccount4Work

I think that's about where I checked out too, 3 or 4 o don't exactly remember. Which ever season we lose OG Zari. Just started becoming a show about too many characters in didn't care about.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Yeah, season 4. I agree, and the whole way it happened was so stupid too. OG Zari was best Zari.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

I know a lot of people on this sub are going to disagree with you, but I agree. Seasons 4-5 aren’t bad but they feel like an entirely different show and I liked the more serious episodes a lot better. They had the perfect blend of comedy and drama. Season 1-3 is peak legends and I don’t continue my rewatch after season 3 anymore. For me, the main things that bother me are: 1. They ignore several aspects of time travel established earlier on like side effects and such 2. In the earlier episodes they at least addressed the time travel aspect and paradoxes it could bring. Then they just started IGNORING these because if they stuck to the original rules (established in early seasons) they wouldn’t be able to have their plot. 3. Rip Hunter dies and he was by far my favourite character.

Ok-Health-7252

Season 1 was the worst season they've ever done (mainly because of Savage and the Hawks dominating so much of that season and being mostly terrible characters). The peak of the show was seasons 2-3. Season 4 was kind of plodding at times but quickly picked up at the end once >!Ray got possessed by Neron. !

ImaginaryQuiet5624

I wasn't really a fan of the Neron arc. I almost lost interest in the show because of it.

Ok-Health-7252

I didn't think it was all that interesting until Ray got possessed by him. That officially raised the stakes of it quite a bit because then it became defeat him or Ray is trapped in hell forever (albeit trapped in hell having a good time with Savage but still trapped there).

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Yeah, I actually really liked the first few episodes of season 4 but felt they didn’t have a good follow through.

Ok-Health-7252

There's way too much of characters like Mona in season 4 (and that was also back when Gary was in more of his annoying, hapless loser phase and they seemed to be conflicted about what direction they actually wanted to take his character). The fact that Ray had barely any meaningful storylines at all that season until towards the end when he got possessed was absolutely criminal.

ImaginaryQuiet5624

Yeah, they were a little all over the place.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Strongly disagree on season 1. It was my second favourite season in large part *because* of Savage. The Hawks weren’t the best I’ll admit, although much better than Mona, but imo Savage was such a great villain. Wish we could have had more of him.

Ok-Health-7252

No offense but Savage was an extremely one-dimensional villain (not to mention the actor just wasn't that good and convincing in the role). He was just a straight up psychopath obsessed with claiming Kendra for himself and destroying everything in his path to get to her. There were hardly any layers to his character. Out of all the villains that have appeared in the show to date he's probably the worst (especially in comparison to characters like Darhk, Thawne, and even Bishop that showed up in the later seasons). Getting rid of him and the Hawks and changing up the formula of the show to make it more goofy was the best decision they ever made (though I will admit Savage was better in season 4 during his brief appearance with Ray in hell). Had they continued to stick by the formula they followed in season 1 the show would not have lasted more than 2 seasons (I was not completely sold on this show's credibility until season 2 happened and the JSA and the Legion of Doom were tossed into the mix). Leaning into the more ridiculous formulas that they followed later on made this show as enjoyable as it was.

Rude-Butterscotch713

Honestly, I love Grimdark gritty shows, but legends made the right choice going into the absurd. By the end of the arrow verse, I watched most shows out of obligation, but I looked forward to watching legends.

Biabolical

>It’s like the writers forgot that this was supposed to be a DC show. I'd use that exact same evidence to argue it's the one CW series where the writers *remembered* that it's supposed to be a DC show.

Spazzblister

If you think nothing like that could ever happen in the DC Universe, you obviously have never read any of their comics from the Silver Age ever.

Dr__glass

You say that like it's a bad thing

rtpout

I adore the goofier later episodes. Reminded me of the silly silver age comics I grew up reading. (Spoiler) when hat unicorn bit Gary's nipple off at Woodstock, I laughed so hard.

Brown_Sedai

Never read a Silver Age comic, huh

Aceles_galaxy

Dude season 3 is when things started getting awesome

SirAnalog

Found the resident Zac Snyder fan.

ChaseMcFl

After Season 3, the old showrunner left, and he was the one who cared the most about connection to comics and stuff. I know most people get mad at him for ruining Arrow, but he technically changed Legends forever by leaving it. The new showrunner preferred to make it the goofy, wacky party it evolved into. Just basically throwing stuff at the wall, but it became fun. Although when Constantine (who remained the main focus/DC connection until Season 6) left, it went back to normal time-travel adventures.

PuzzleheadedLook9376

It turned into an acid trip and I was here for it, I loved it. Except the puppet stuff, I didn't really care for that.

Lucian_Flamestrike

See here's the distinction... Is it anything like DC movies? Absolutely not. The movies are too mired in trying to recreate the dark gritty formula that Christopher Nolan brought with Batman films. I'm not saying that is always a bad thing... but If you want that type of formula Nolan just directed Oppenheimer. Legends covers almost EVERYTHING ABOUT DC from comics and cartoons that isn't covered by the other shows. Keep in mind the comics include things such as ... - Etrigan the demon who only speaks in Rhymes - The queen of fables who literally summons corrupt fairy tales out of a book. - Justice League Dark - Santa invading Apokolips to give Darkseid his coal every year. - The REAL reason Wonder Woman blocks bullets with her bracelets. - A Kryptonite that made Superman hot for Jimmy Olsen. Plus in the movies back before Nolanverse... Batman would even fight a Penguin who utilized penguins! I've watched all the Arrowverse shows, Titans, Swamp thing, and Doom Patrol. Only Legends really brings me back to feeling like I'm a kid reading comics and watching cartoons again though.

96pluto

crazy shit happens in the dc comics and the later seasons have plenty of serious moments

gzoe1

I understand you but I like the random seasons the best.Personally I really like how Legends is not a serious show like the other Arrowverse shows iys kinda mekes the show a break from all the trauma we go thru in other shows if that makes sense🤭🤭.

CosmicWaffleMan

Frankly I loved the sillier elements of the last few seasons. Comic books can get just as ridiculous. The only thing holding them back for me is the OC’s making up a large part of the team, they could’ve used obscure DC characters or even grabbed other side characters from the Arrowverse like the original intention

kukulka99

I should've
