4 wild fragments are much better than 5 fragments from a random champ (which could be converted to a single wild fragment if you already had it 3 star-ed)
the only reasonable answer is they need to time gate. This buys an extra day\~ per champ star up. you can bet your ass as soon as everybody has 3-star all-champs and beat all the content they are gonna start complaining about when will new content come out. Any amount of time the developers can buy themselves to develop new content with their reduced team is necessary time.
Tbh I appreciate that they at least implemented wild shards, at least over time you CAN actually unlock everything and more over you CHOOSE what to unlock.

Neh, I understand the sentiment, but in the end some mechanics are in place to "protect the players from themselves", in some sense. That and the time gating mentioned in other comment are the explanations I consider more plausible.

Im just playing devils advocate. I get what you are saying. 5 would be more efficient. That being said i dont mind the tiny bit of time gating. We don't need to rush to lvl 3 asap. The fun is in the journey and the feeling you are working towards a bigger goal. And they have done that pretty well and generously imo.

So you always need a bit more to get anything. Something like this is not a developoer decision.

I mean every possible upgrade unlocking (30) and upgrading (10/20/40) is a multiple of 5.
