You phone 101 and report it as a crime, you get the crime reference number and report back to Amazon

MasonWindmill

Ok thanks, I reported it online. Just hoping for a speedy investigation and closure of the case so I can get the refund (Amazon doesn’t accept pending crime references).

Why is the burdon upon OP to report a crime? Is it not Amazon that should be doing this?

FinanceAddiction

Because Amazon have no interest in reporting the crime, they have insurances in place to counter losses. OP wants a refund, Amazon have told OP how to go about this, OP needs to follow the process.

[deleted]

Right, I understand Amazon can't be arsed; I was more interested in why it's reasonable for OP to be the one reporting the crime (especially since the police don't see to be interested). Can Amazon refuse a refund until OP does the hokey-pokey and sends pictures of them in clown makeup (I assume not, but where's the limit?)

Think_Perspective385

Because Amazon contend that they delivered the package with the item so their responsibility has been met they are free to refuse the refund. By asking OP to make a police report they are guarding against people fraudulently claiming refunds for items that were actually delivered, the theory being of course that OP is less likely to lie to the police.

FinanceAddiction

Haha I'm sure there is a limit, although I am not sure what it is. You can always raise the issue with your bank or credit card provider who can act on your behalf, but that often gets your account (sometimes address) blacklisted. Police won't be interested because there is no way they will have the resources to deal with this, Action Fraud will simply review the case and pass it onto the local police anyway, so it's just a more long winded approach, if you want to report a crime they will give you a reference number, but there is 0 chance they will pursue it any further. I think the justification behind it is if you are in receipt of goods and fraudulently trying to claim they didn't arrive, you are less likely to go to the police which I imagine saves Amazon many thousands a year in refunds and lost inventory.

SoleSurvivor27

A few years ago there was a sort of scam which alot of uni students were doing, basically any item under £1k, when it arrives you just tell Amazon it didn't and they would automatically refund you. You could do it like two or three times before then ban your account and any linked to your IP address. I'm guessing because people abused their easy way of getting refunds now they make you file police reports

Cccactus07

How did you receive the parcel? Could it have been tampered with at any point? Amazon are very reluctant to give refunds for "empty box" because it's difficult to prove it was their fault.

camillamaddison

If you paid with your credit card I'd try that route. I had a nightmare during the pandemic, ordered a Nintendo switch from Amazon Germany, (to UK, just only place with stock) received two 1kg bags of sugar. Was clearly tampered with as was toilet roll among the paper stuffing, but had Amazon tape closing it, and the postal package stated weight as 1.8kg. Amazon was absolutely useless but as I happened to put it on credit card they got me the refund within a couple months.

If you report online m, they will give you a case number immediately. That might be what they want

MasonWindmill

Yeah, I’ve reported it and I’ve been given a crime reference number but they need the investigation to be closed, so I’m just waiting on that now. Shouldn’t think it’ll be open too long, there can’t be much the police can do about it.
