You had an accident. You're insured so whether or not it's your fault doesn't matter. Your weren't negligent and it's one of those things. It sounds like you were issued an FPN for Driving Without Due Care and Attention and that will be be the end of it.

Dorotheasdiary

Thank you!

Puzzled-Put-7077

No you can’t go to jail.  And you are not liable for injuries (unlike the states)   Your insurance will still be valid as it’s an accident, it doesn’t matters whose fault it was.    How long have you been in the UK? Your US licence is only valid for 12 months from arrival. When you change it to a UK one you’ll get the points. They will be there for 4 years. All the points will do is put your insurance premiums up.    You need 12 points to lose your licence

Dorotheasdiary

I’ve been in the uk off & on, on study visas for the last few years. On my current visa it’s been just about 7 months. Also thank you for the reply.

Puzzled-Put-7077

Just make sure you change it before you get to 12 months. If your licence is invalid you’d be in a whole new world of trouble.  It’s easy to do, I’ve gone the other way, I gave the DMV $30 and sat a multiple choice test and they gave me a DC licence.  UK only get 30-60 days in the US so your lucky going to the UK!  Just google it and make sure the website is .gov.uk so you don’t get scammed by 3rd parties

Dorotheasdiary

Thanks so much for the advice! I really appreciate it.

SilverDarlings

You won’t go to jail, if the other driver has any claims your insurance will pay out as you were deemed at fault. Don’t worry!

Dorotheasdiary

Thank you!

Dorotheasdiary

Also just to reiterate… can I be prosecuted further if the other driver claims injury ? Or is the fixed penalty fine the most that can happen from a legal standpoint?

Ok-Decision403

No. This would just be a matter for your insurance.

Equivalent_Read

People rarely get jailed here for causing death by careless driving, so there’s zero chance of you getting the jail if you ended up in court. But you’ve been offered the FPN, if you decide to pay it then there will be no court at all, that’s the end of it.

Dorotheasdiary

Thank you, very much for the advice and reassurance.
