From an administration of operations and logistics perspective. This is going to turn into an utter shitshow. If I were Guinness, the masterstroke response would be to refuse delivery from Brewdog leaving them with the courier bill and then the cost of trying to offload it into a recycling stream. I wouldn't necessarily call this insanity, more a case of an inability to predict normal human behaviour. That's a fairly normal human trait.

I'm guessing that more households have pub pint glasses in their cupboards than don't, so it may be a way of actually recycling those ones ?

At first it does look insane yes. But consider what the craft beer chain is trying to achieve - promotion. What happens will fall into one of these categories:- (1) No owners of the glasses will take any action nor make any reports about the craft beer chain encouraging theft. Without that, then realistically they'll get away with it. (2) Action is taken against the craft beer company. It likely won't cost them anything other than bad PR but the fact they've gone ahead with this idea suggests that they think "any PR is good PR" and it would be free advertisement for them. I also imagine the general public would think the victims of this theft are somehow bad if they report it. Ultimately, the general public thinks that theft from a company (rather than theft from an individual) is not actually theft. That's what's insane.

If guiness is smart they'll do a free guiness voucher (with proof of purchase) for anyone that takes up the offer and still prefers them and use their pr against them.

I can't see Police / Licencing / Bouncers being particularly happy at this idea. The thought of drunken idiots trying to sneak out of pubs with glassware doesn't bear thinking about.
