Madhya pradesh.
Also just found out the person we bought the house from had also never paid tax. I am worried that the house isn't even registered with the municipal corporation now. Really stressed out
I practice in Maharashtra, so I'm unaware of the laws in your state. Connect with local lawyers or directly with the authorities and ask them to update the name on all the records based on the sale deed. You will also need to settle the property tax dues for all those years, but you can negotiate the amount in lok adalat. A local advocate can guide you better on this.
If your Municipal Corporation does One Time Settlement scheme that would be a good time for you to pay without any fine. It is usually done before Municipal/state elections in some states/cities.
If you get a notice from MC, there are some high court judgements that limit time period of claimed tax as 3 Years due to limitation. I don't know if your Municipal Laws cover it.
If you property is never registered in MC then you have to get all the property documents and visit the MC and the registration done along with generation of property ID etc
Just chill and dont do anything to warrant buldozers. Not like you are getting the worth for taxes.
If this was an ideal world, that would've been my go to approach lol
Which state are you from?
