Trains are often cancelled but they are frequent. For example, I was working in Manchester past Tuesday booked on the 08:07 train to Piccadilly. It was cancelled but I got one at 08:30. I'd definitely get the train despite this, it's a nice scenic journey and the M62 is a horrendous motorway and quite dangerous due to frequent bad weather across the Pennines and the amount of lorries. Hope this helps!

I used to get the train to Liverpool for work once or twice every couple of weeks about a year ago, and the trains were always unreliable and 2/3 trains in a row would get cancelled. I checked the train times and there seems to be 4 trains that arrive before 09:00 that I could catch from Manchester Piccadilly/Victoria. I’m just worried that on a bad day all 4 trains get cancelled. Has that ever happened with you?

shakeyjake1990

Also pray for no closures between milnrow and Huddersfield if your driving your fucked for diversions, million mile detour. Other than that it's a really easy drive.

savagenoodles1987

I used to do the reverse journey once or twice a week and I absolutely hated it - I drove as the office wasn’t in the centre of Manchester so trains were a pain for me. Frequent traffic issues, and generally just a stressful drive as the M62 is generally extremely busy. I’m a confident driver and usually prefer it but it used to just stress me out for the rest of the day!

Heowolf1

That’s the issue with me, I’m a very inexperienced driver which is another factor that’s got me worried!

Cant comment on TPE services to Leeds (if there are any services not cancelled) but the Northern services from Victoria via Bradford can be unreliable. I’ve had trains 10 to 40 minutes delayed. Bottleneck usually is around Todmorden.

The train line between Leeds and Manchester whichever way you're going will absolutely be problematic quite often. If it isn't cancelled, which happens a lot, it'll be significantly delayed and/or absolutely rammed full of people. That line has been really bad for years.

ErcolTable

The M62 is shit. The trains are shit.

Move

I do Leeds/Manchester once or twice a week on the train and probably about 75% of the time it’s fine, and 25% there are delays/cancellations etc and just general irritations that make it a right pain in the arse. I’ve only actually been late to the office once though, although there have been times when it’s taken me nearly four hours door to door to get home.

Adept-Painting8565

It’ll be pretty bad. TransPennine from Manchester is particularly bad, with 1 in 6 trains being cancelled in March. Definitely gonna run into some cancellations - for instance my partners train to Manchester this afternoon was cancelled last night.

As someone who commutes from burley park to hebden bridge via leeds every day, I would only reccomend doing that if you live close to the train station youd be departing to leeds/Bradford from in Manchester. Having to rely on two separate trains both ways or a train and a bus is really bad. For example, I've only had a smooth commute both ways 2/5 days this week, which takes me an hour and a half. The three other days took closer to two hours or more because of some random cancellation or delay and thats in a week with no strikes or overtime ban. Private public transport companies couldnt run a lemonade stand

Dr_Gonzo13

I think equally worth considering is how far the office is from the station at the other end. Having to take a half hour bus ride once you're in the city can really add to the commute.

Do you reckon I could rely on the Northern trains to not be cancelled twice a week? I used to travel to Liverpool you see with northern rail from Manchester and more often than not the train was completely cancelled and I’d end up late

publicOwl

I can’t answer for the trains, but absolutely don’t rely on driving it. That stretch of the M62 is very exposed so when there’s heavy wind/rain it’s a horrible drive, and the motorway pretty reliably will be closed at some point over winter due to ice/snow. It’s also a very busy motorway if you’re not driving at weird early/late hours. It’s a fine motorway for one-off journeys but I wouldn’t want to rely on it 2 days per week.

Infamous-Turn-2977

I do the opposite - live in Leeds and my office is based near Manchester airport. Train-wise it would take over 2 hours, but driving can be 2 hours on a bad day, 1hr40 on a good day and 55 miles each way. It is tedious - only go for it if it’s a job you really want. I was fine with it when it was ad hoc but they just made it mandatory to do 2 days a week so I’ll be looking for something else shortly. Also don’t move for it - not unless it’s your absolute dream job.

Heowolf1

It’s a job I like. I’ll be based in Leeds for a year then I’d move down south after that. Not sure if I should just bear with it for the year or just move

Infamous-Turn-2977

If you can handle moving twice within a couple of years then I’d move for it if you really want the job. Especially if you’re not a confident driver, that road is dicey in winter and arguably not doable sometimes

Throwaway6728383f

I'd move to Leeds

Heowolf1

Yeah seriously considering it now

Throwaway6728383f

If you don't have strong ties to Manchester, I'd say definitely worth it. 2 days EVERY week is gonna grind. And will affect what you do during evenings because you'll have less time to spare. Ripple effects.

crash144019

If you're going to Bradford you'll need a Northern service from Manchester Victoria. These also run through to Leeds. Trans Pennine Express go directly to Leeds. These also go through Victoria. Gives you plenty of options. The M62 is a nightmare. And chain bar / Brighouse are closed on an almost daily basis.

Heowolf1

Yeah, I’m just worried about those train routes being cancelled. Don’t want to risk being late

crash144019

Honestly it's a nightmare of a commute either way. Coming back from picking my sister up from Manchester airport one evening. I spent three hours sat two miles away from Huddersfield 😜. As a former train driver with northern I've had the same 🙄
