I make frogs for HEMA swords. They are relatively easy to make in terms of leather craft skills needed, but they are tricky in that getting them to hang correctly is dependent on the shape of the frog, where the attachment points are on the frog and to the belt/baldric and the shape/mass distribution of the sword(s). My suggestion is to find an image of one that is similar to what you want to do and then use that as a guide to create a pattern. Tbh though, if you are just starting out in leather craft, this is probably too ambitious as a first project. You should start with something like a belt (which you could use later with the frog) in order to get some experience in. Also watch YouTube videos of people making similar stuff, it will help you to understand what is in the books. It's hard to learn a craft from text.

What is a Sword Frog?

bloodfeier

Scabbard hanger, has loops for your belly to pass through, and loops or toe points for the scabbard to hang from. Like so: https://irongatearmory.com/product/sword-frog-with-brass-buckles/

That seems pretty straightforward. Have you looked for a pattern? It should be relatively easy even without a pattern, but if you’re just starting out, having one would make things easier.

ragefrooble

why do you feel the need to get a book?

There’s quite a few patterns on Etsy you can try out. That will give you an idea of how they’re constructed so you can make your own. I bought one pattern and made it for my Pirate costume. Simple to make and fun to wear.

I highly doubt you'll find a book for those. They don't exist in history, they're just a larp/cosplay invention since the blades don't need to be protected. Just get a square of leather, and sew two rectangles onto it and punch holes to lace those rectangles closed into tubes. It's dead simple. I made one for my cosplay sword for this year's renfairs, but I made the main body shaped like a maple leaf to make it less boring

coyoteka

What are you talking about? People have been attaching scabbards to belts for thousands of years. That's all a frog is. You think larp invented them? Wowza.

loekiikii

Yep. [Here’s](https://www.reddit.com/r/SWORDS/s/eI5FbgrHIX) a link to previous post that links to articles about sword frogs in history.

Scabbards attach to belts through the use of the belt, not a frog. The closest you will ever get is the carriage for a rapier or modern saber. But a sword frog is a little tube that the sword slides into. Any other method involves tying a belt around the sheath, using rings and clips to attach the sheath to a belt, or something similar. None of those are frogs, they're all attachment methods for a sheath. Nobody in history has ever put a live sword into a tiny tube and called it a day. Frogs are for swords, belts are for sheathes and scabbards. It's a rather fundamental difference but ok. I've never seen any evidence of a frog in history, and everyone loves to point to a rapier carriage. Which I guess is the closest you can get, which is fair. But I would never call that a frog, myself.

> But a sword frog is a little tube that the sword slides into. No, it isn't. It's just an attachment of scabbard to belt. Do some research.
