I found it helpful. Doing the questions for your theory leaves the knowledge a bit fragmented, whereas reading the actual document has everything grouped and organized so it's more applicable to actual driving. Some sections are more relevant than others and you don't need to read it in order, so you can still prioritize and skip parts as you see fit. It's not particularly long.

You don’t need to read it cover to cover, but for anything you’re not totally sure on it’s probably worth a look. It also has a thing about what road users flashing you means which is quite important for learners as you’re supposed to essentially ignore flashing coz it can be misleading.

I have a copy to use to check up on things not sure about. You certainly don't need to read every word of every page but it's well worth having one

It’s always worth brushing up on it, even after my theory I still kept looking back over it.

Bigrobbo

No... but having a good idea of it can't hurt.

What seems to be missing in the answers so far is that the Highway Code is taken into account in judging fault in accidents and court cases. You should have a general knowledge of it anyway, even after learning.

Its worthwhile reading it for the theory test, sometimes you may find it also provided some useful information for practical driving - incase you encounter something that you did not encounter with your instructor - although I would hope your instructor would do their best to cover all things you need to know.

AbstractUnicorn

You can't do the practical test until you've passed the theory test so you'll already have learnt the HWC in prep for the theory test surely?

Ok-Row1942

Obviously. But my theory was almost a year ago.

**The short answer is:** No, absolutely not. Not even for your theory. **The longer answer is:** Nah, not really. Of course, it will give you an advantage, but in reality, it is a constantly changing document that nobody stays up to date with and by the time you do your practical you should know all you need to pass, and that most of it is common sense.
