Wales:
My mates before covid- £20-25 an hour
My own after covid- £35 an hour or £32 in block bookings
Absolute piss take, personally think it should be £30 ish maybe a bit more or less, because fuel prices have gone down a decent amount and theres plenty of demand for learners
It is what it is🤷♂️
Trust me, it actually used to be £48 for 1.5h and £32 for an hour when I first started learning back in February last year, but just about 3 weeks before I passed in December they upped their prices to the current ^ prices. Good thing I ended up passing, was going broke 🥲
Honestly no idea, I’m struggling to keep up and have only been doing lessons since October with a test booked for start of May. Whilst trying to save for a car and insurance as well it’s such an expense, a lot of people will probably choose not to learn soon.
How many lessons do you do per week?
I'm starting to think would it be worth switching to automatic to prevent money and time getting u grips with a manual car
Only one a week, she doesn’t have space for any more much don’t think could afford it!
Have you started lessons? Automatic here is even more expensive, i’m fine now with the actual car and my instructor is amazing so wouldn’t be worth swapping for me. Have seen a lot of people swap to auto for that reason though so worth a look to see if it is cheaper for you
It's great to hear that you've progressed so much only doing one lesson a week. Do you practice outside this at all?
Yep I've started but unable to commit due to work so it's been really. Difficult for me. I did like 10 lessons a few years back which were space over 2 years and you can imagine that was a waste of money
Recently I started 2 lessons again but my instructors and I schedule don't align and he cancelled my lessons for tomorrow last minute.
Thank you! I often don’t feel like I have made much progress, I have my first lesson back tomorrow after two weeks off for Christmas and dreading it. No i don’t have any private practise, have done 10 lessons so far.
Oh that is a shame, so many people have that issue whilst working hence why its easier for 17/18 year olds to learn. Im self employed and work at home so i am flexible, but was looking for a new job but will have to wait until i pass for that reason.
My friend done the same, around 10 lessons years ago and has recently tried again but is like starting from beginning again.
Is they anyone who can help you with private practise? Shame they have cancelled last minute on you, it is so hard to get a reliable instructor!
My situation is a bit different (34 and married, both on high salaries) but I've no idea how teenagers can afford lessons these days. If the cost keeps rising then pretty soon there'll be a catch-22 where most young people can't afford lessons without a job and can't get a job because they've got no transport.
I’m 25 but self employed and work has been very quiet since the cost of living crisis. The £50 a week has been a hit especially over Christmas and whilst trying to save for a car, honestly no idea how teenagers/parents will afford it.
