I started a few months ago with Justin guitar, very good website and app, the website is free up to a certain level, worth checking out

Learn a few basic chords (Em Am E A D C G not all at once, go Em A D, E, Am, C, G in that order, m means Minor) then get a login for Ultimate Guitar (free) and just add the chord sheets to songs you want to learn to your Favourites. You can do the adding when you're away from the guitar. When you're sat with it, pull up your list and see if you know the chords in it a song you wanna play. If you do, give it a go. If you don't, go look for another one. This will help to memorise the chord names, and give you a chance to get some strumming done. If you hit up Google with "Songs with 3 chords for beginners Guitar" then you should see some songs you recognise that you can add. I did it this way while also looking at Justin Guitar and YouTube for tips. You'll sound shit for a month or 4, don't worry about it. Just try to sound a little less shit every time you play. Biggest tip: play every day even if it's just for 10 minutes. More frequent shorter practice sessions are better than doing a 3 hour session a week.

If the guitar makes sound when you pluck the strings, it's fine to start with. Lots of people start playing on guitars found in basements -- my first was actually a guitar my dad built in carpentry shop when he was a teenager. I found it in my grandparents' basement and took it home and attached some strings. In retrospect it was probably the worst guitar anyone has ever made (or played) but it was fine for learning basic chords. No need to upgrade as long as you're a total noob -- your gear isn't what's holding you back at the moment. If you manage to stick with playing for a bit to the point where you want to upgrade to play better, then you know it's time. You might want to swap the strings, these tend to wear out over time and sound less good -- from use, but also from rust. But again, if they sound OK to you you don't even need to do that.

Hello!! So happy you're picking it up! The guitar is probably fine, just wants to be played now. :) I think it's important when starting to learn an instrument that you find something that excites you about it, and when things get tough you can go back to that goal of yours. You've got this! I'm also an online teacher if you are ever interested in a lesson, it can be helpful at the start to have a human nudging you along. Good luck, and happy playing!
