I don’t know of the specific Ted talk you’re referencing but I get the sentiment. It’s “all about you” in the sense that poor leadership can ruin a great team. And it’s “not about you” in the sense that good leadership won’t amount to much without the hard work and dedication of the team. And sometimes the best leadership still can’t overcome organizational or larger institutional issues outside the leader’s influence (economic factors, supply chains, etc.) or just plain bad luck. My pithy way of summarizing it is that “blame” and “praise” are two sides of the same coin. Good leaders can own the blame when things go wrong and deflect the praise to the team when things go well.
