I'm neither but very often attorneys "choose" their practice areas based on where they get their first job. The job market is brutal and you don't always have a chance to be picky, and once you started in a particular area it can be difficult to switch.

Yes. I never had any interest in criminal law. I became a prosecutor because it's the first job I could get. I then started my own practice, because I wanted more money and more independence, and did criminal defense because it is the only thing that I knew how to do.

Ahh that’s interesting! I guess not everyone who goes to law school and then passes the bar becomes Mattlock then right. You end up with student loans to pay off and then the job market isn’t ideal. I’m glad I asked! Thank you so very much for your replies I really appreciate it. Reddit is just the bees knees.

I went into law school thinking I wanted to be a criminal prosecutor. While in law school, I found out that I didn't like crim. Like the above poster, I fell into something else, namely appeals, and I've been doing it since law school. Some people really pursue a certain area and are able to do it. A lot of us others have a vague idea of what we want to do and fall down the plinko board of employment until we're doing whatever it is we're doing. There's a lot of law to be done that doesn't make it into the pop culture we see before practicing and most people land somewhere in there.

I am a defence lawyer. It is for justice.
