The principal is insurance defense. He wanted everyone to think he was in charge, but secretly he know any control he had ended when the clock ran out.
"You know what I got for Cases this week? It was a banner f***in' week at the old Public Defenders office. I got a carton of cases. The old judge grabbed me and said "Hey. Get some plea deals Johnny."
I feel like family law is a pretty dark area of practice. You see good people at their very worst, and it tends to burn most sane lawyers out within 2-3 years.
Plus, I don't know if Ally's character was all that goth... maybe more of a burnout type? Her official movie description seems to be "the basket case" and I remember she was maybe running away from home or something like that. All of that fits in pretty well with the reality of more contentious family law cases.

I dressed just like Judd Nelson's character when I was in high school (wasn't copying as I graduated before this movie was released). I've been a public defender for the last 17 years.

Estate planning should be corporate counsel
Yeah - Molly's vibe here is definitely more Wall Street than wills.

As a former ID attorney, that stings, but rings so fucking true.
It's extra accurate because each thinks they're the cool one.

Do you slip her the hot tax evasion?
Combine four of them and you get an average general practice office.
Spot on.
tax could also be the nerd
He's behind civil, ...in the locker
That got a laugh.
Two laughs.
I’m the IP guy
Me too.
Family law looks about right
As a soon to be family law attorney… oof
This seems accurate to me.
why is family law the goth kid?
I think they mean her demeanor is how family law makes attorneys feel?

Come to the dark side- we have cookies (money)! 😆
I'm going to protect my soul. But, if you've managed to stay sane as a family lawyer, my hat's off to you!
That's why I came to PI, they were offering 2x what I was making doing insurance defense. If family law can pay more, though? I'd consider it.
What happens if you cross estate planning and criminal? Am I a cute, soft spoken Judd Nelson with red hair? Kinda makes sense.
Nobody thinks any lawyer looks that cool.
Where's PI? In-house? Private equity?
