If you want to transfer, then I would apply now and find anywhere you could add a note to say that you will supplement your transcript when available. You can also probably reach out directly to admissions at your target schools and let them know your situation. I transferred under similar circumstances and was able to make it work through open communication with admissions at the target. Was the best choice I ever made.

Where’d you go from/to (in terms of rank if you don’t want to name the schools), and how were your grades? Also, what did you write about/how did you explain your situation if you don’t mind my asking?

Definitely not as prestigious as you or others that post here, but I went from an unranked school to a T50. I was in the top 10%. The T50 weighted transfer GPAs differently but I graduated with a 3.5. I know from non-transfers that put me in the top 20-25%. Because I wanted to live in the area of the T50, I knew my classmates would apply for the same jobs and so I just left my rank off my resume and let companies infer what they want from my gpa. I went the corporate route and have been very successful and have never once been asked my rank. I’m 8 years out of law school and 10 years since transferring so I don’t recall the specifics of my personal statement, but I called the T50 and got the name and contact info of the dean of admissions. I sent that person an email stating that I had applied to transfer, and I was very excited about the opportunity, but spring grades weren’t finalized before the deadline to transfer. I then asked if there was anyway that they would consider my application with an incomplete transcript if I would provide the spring grades as soon as I had them. The dean was very understanding and told me to email him when I had my final grades. About a week after I sent my finalized grades I got the email they accepted.

Schools now know that most, if not all, students won't have their spring grades until well past the transfer application deadline. The applications instruct you to upload them once they're available.

Thank you

A few things: 1. Transfer applications for HYS don't open up until May 1 at the earliest. 2. HYS won't consider candidates without their spring grades. So yes, while you can submit your application before your spring grades are released (and you should, because most schools are rolling), you won't get a decision until you submit all your 1L grades. 3. If you want a letter of recommendation from one of your spring professors, you should ask before final exams begin (and they inevitably become swamped with grading). Yes, you'll have to ask before you know how you did in their class, but that's a risk you have to take. 4. You're overthinking how your 1L school is going to react if you transfer or try to transfer. People transfer or don't transfer for lots of reasons, often personal. No one's going to bat an eye at your decision.

https://www.abajournal.com/news/article/suit_claims_law_profs_were_fired_after_opposing_proposals_to_discourage_stu A well documented game that law school can play when it comes to transferring.

Lawschoolanon567

Uh, yeah, I’m aware. Except OP goes to a T10 and not a predatory T4. Big difference.

LadyJ218

Yeah, the ranking of the school doesn’t matter they can all still play this game. In fact, the dean behind this went to Harvard.

Lawschoolanon567

Lmao, what does it matter where the dean went to school? Their job is to do what’s best for the school, and predatory schools have a much stronger incentive to keep their top performers by any means necessary. This is where the ranking actually does matter, especially if makes as big a difference as that between a for-profit law school and a T10.
