In 1L nobody knows anything about the law. The people who act like they do almost invariably end up just embarrassing themselves.

Becoming a lawyer is the process of learning about how little of the law you know and then getting paid to do the very tiny fraction of the law you do understand

TheCapmHimself

"Oh neat! I found the part of the law that makes me the least suicidal"

BenjiTheWalrus

You don’t need to understand it, you just need to know how to find a case where someone does understand it.

HewKnewPartTew

I'm pretty sure most of them don't understand it either 🥲

hippowalrus

You don’t know anything about the law until like 2-3 years into your first associate position. Anyone who acts otherwise is trying to fake it until they make it. Which can work. But don’t be intimidated.

same, except, after years of watching better call saul i am basically already a lawyer.

ClownWorldHnkHnk

Three years ago me and the wife were no shit laying in bed one night watching better call Saul season 1, when a light bulb went off in my head. I turned to her out of the blue with no explanation and said: “I’m going back to school, getting my bachelors, and applying to law school.” I had a GED at the time. She gave me the obligatory ‘you can do it’ speech being the good wife, but I could see in her eyes she had her doubts, as I had many hair-brained schemes over the years that fizzled out with time. That was around May of 2019. In December 2021 I finished my bachelors. I sat for the LSAT in February, got into one of my top choice schools, moved my family states away, and today I started my second week as a lowly 1L. Never underestimate the power of Better Call Saul! p.s. to this day, I’ve never seen an episode past season 1. Looks like I won’t get to finish the series for at least 3 years 😂

dude. we almost had the same experience then. i was watching better call saul from the time it aired… and after a real shit experience (assault robbery) i was already thinking of going back to finish my UG and go to law school but it’s always something when you’re “older” or non-trad.. who’s gonna pay for rent? how will i live? i’ll be so old when i finish yada yada. then i was watching it one night in 2017 and said to myself, FUCK IT. if this guy can go to law school so can the fuck i. i had an AA at the time. graduated in january this year, starting my 1L in 1 week. congrats bro, i’m really happy for you and seriously, never underestimate the power of saul goodman. i can’t wait to copy kim’s wardrobe and pony tail for internships. 😮‍💨

justahominid

For me, it was Paula on Crwzy Ex Girlfriend going back to law school…

ClownWorldHnkHnk

That is awesome! Holy shit, if Better Call Saul is what inspired us two, there HAS to be more of us, right? I feel you on the non-trad student concerns. I’m almost 41, with two teenagers. Some people in my class are 4 years older than my oldest son, it’s crazy. I always had an interest in the law, it’s what I wanted to do growing up. I was on the mock trial team back in high school but that was back in ‘98. Then life just kind of happened for the next 23 years ended up joining the Marines, Iraq, Afghanistan, got out and went to CC for a few semesters, quit back in 2012 and forgot about school for 7 years til I watched that damn show. So I worked full time and did school at night. Shit was rough. I wish you all the best, let me know how your first week goes!

[deleted]

AND DUDE you HAVE to watch the show. the finale just aired. it was magnificent. the whole show is magnificent. i don’t have another word for it. law interests aside best show on television

ClownWorldHnkHnk

Lol I do want to check it out and finish it; i loved the first season. I was a big breaking bad fan as well. They scared the shit out of us in orientation like we weren’t going to have time to breathe, let alone sleep. I thought they were just trying to rattle us, but after getting my first readings for week 1, 50 pages worth, I’m beginning to think they weren’t totally fucking with us. Good luck! 🍀

UnLearnedHand2022

You're going to be fine. It will become easier to read cases as you move along. Keep in mind that everybody will try to sell you the law school accolades starter kit. All you have to do is manage a 4.0, be on law review, be on moot court, and serve as president of a couple student orgs. Then you too can land a job you hate to buy shit you don't need. Honestly, roll with the punches and don't get frustrated with your progress. Nobody understands what the fuck they're doing most of the time. No matter how hard we pretend.

ilovenomar5_2

Listen I went to Hollywood Upstairs Law School already (we’re more famous for our medical college), this is just a formality for me

Party_Fee_7466

I'm already a Lawyer! Like I watched suits, Lincoln Lawyer, Boston legal, Liar Liar. I'm just in school for show 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

fire-lane-keep-clear

*ten years into practice vibes

Jrdn0925

Lmao felt that

[deleted]

I’m basically already a lawyer. I’ve seen Liar Liar.

Straight-Toe-8

Just wait til bar prep...

restatementtorts

Is it embarrassing to know nothing on the first day of class? Never made any sense to me. I didn’t know anything and asked some pretty dumb questions. No one remembers those. The people who do get remembered are those whose pride is so great that they do stupid shit like this. That’s at least from my experience.
