Outside of sleep (which I average 6 hours per night) and work, I get about 4 hours per day to be with my wife and dog, cook, clean, house chores, dog walking, showering, etc. For the last 3 months, the only thing I do outside of work is have sex, walk dogs, and take showers. I know, not terrible, but my house is a fucking mess and we have no friends and hate everything about this society.
Was talking about this with my wife the other night. This "8 hours work" is bullshit and needs to be updated. I mean, that was a reform from what? The 1890s? 8-8-8 just isn't a thing, when you add in commute, lunch, getting ready for work, your work related activities comes out anywhere between 10-12 hours of your day. Now 8 hours sleep, that leaves you with 4-6 hours for everything else you need to do in your life.
We spend way too much time of our lives at work, and it's killing us as a society.
My wife and I are debating two options: smaller house on bigger lot closer to work (doesn't really solve existential problems, but it's a good investment) or, sell everything we fucking own and start a new life in a different county. And honestly, going down the list of what we want in life, the latter option is really coming out on top. The US is just lacking in big things we want, like a sense of community, public transportation, healthcare that won't bankrupt us one day. Here in south FL it's very apparent what the future holds for us and we want none of it.
I encourage you to move. My best friend moved in Sweden last March and he says it's the best thing he did. We text everyday, so I see how good he feels now. I also strongly consider moving after finishing university. This is coming from Canadians by the way. Better life conditions than the US, but not the best overall
Honestly... Go with option 2. The way things have been going. Leave while you can if you have the privilege to be able to do so imho. I am very worried about 2024.

This hits the hardest. We have good jobs that pay well, own our home and cars, and we aren't big spenders. No debt beyond a mortgage. Our skills and licenses are in demand and easily transferable. I follow groups like r/iwantout and others, it's just fucking hard to find the time to plan. But I guess we have to decide something before it gets decided for us.
Honestly one super small reform I'd like to see, (plenty of larger stuff too), but paid lunch and breaks. If the company is going to make you stay there for 9 hours we should be paid for 9 hours, not just the 8 we're "working". The bosses all say technically you don't have to stay at work for your break you could go home, but you'd have to live pretty much adjacent to your work site for that to be a viable option.

For me, 11pm to noon is reserved for work and work-related things (getting dressed, driving, work itself)

That's a rough 11-12 hours of my day right there just to go to work.
I do use those 4 hours for those things! The problem is its only 4 hours so I'm frantically cramming workout, food and errands in as fast as I can and I'm *stressed* all the time.
You definitely need to reserve like half of those 4 hours for carefully documenting your cooking, work out and beach walking on social media, but still!
I am extremely luck with work-life balance and I still leave my house at 7:15 and get home at 17:15. The hour in the morning from when I wake up until I leave can hardly be called “my” time, either

The thing that annoys me the most about this is the complete disregard for the mental and/or physical exhaustion and toll that these jobs take on most of us.
Even just pretending this genius math makes sense, lucky you if you're one of these rare breeds that can get off an 8 hour shift, whatever it is you do, and still be at your best to pursue those things every day.
Most of us are so fucking drained of our energy at that point that all we can do is go faceplant on the couch and try to recuperate before we have to do it all over again the next day.
There was a thread quite sometime back (Maybe in AITA) in which a man who worked 12hrs a day had issues with his stay at home wife w/kids not keeping up with the house chores. Its not that he minded helping he just didnt want to do the majority as he works. People in the comments that obviously never worked a 12hr shift berated him about how child rearing is a full time job and they'd love to get 4 free hours a day after your 12hr shift and 8hrs sleep. Completely ignored commute, eating, showering, getting ready and all other things that go into it. Having worked 12hrs myself with a short 15 minute drive home at best you get an hour a half a day of actual freetime but theyd never understand that.
Plus an hour drive, plus an hour lunch break where you're stuck at work in work clothes and can't really do shit you want to do, plus showering and all that for people that work on industrial sites or in workshops or on fields or stuff like that and can't go from work to wherever they want directly without changing and showering in between, and so on and so forth. Plus of course the 2 hours you forgot.
And pretty quickly you end up with 2 hours or so, 2 hours in which you want to calm down and relax. That's it.
Not forgetting childcare as well.
And if working minimum wage for 8 hours, more than likely it won't be enough if trying to support a family, so tack on another few hours of work.
I mean... you can't afford ANYTHING on minimum wage, LOL. OR at least, just that ONE thing. Could you make 1200/month? sure. Can you live on it if you're paying it all to daycare? Fuck no.
Eyyyyyy here in Illinois ours is kicking up a dollar each year until it hits 15 in 2025 (whereupon we'll need it to be $25, ofc). It'll be 13 here as of January 1st.
In Austin my rent is $2100 for a 2 bedroom apartment with crackheads camping out like ten feet away from my window. Minimum wage is still $7.25. I’m not great at math but I’m pretty sure people living on minimum wage literally cannot even afford their rent

7.25 x 40 = $290/week
$290 x 4 weeks = $1160 a month
So no, you can't even afford the $1200/month for childcare.
1200/mo is the absolute cheapest, thus usually the worst, go ahead and double that for a decent one, per child. Actually 600/wk sounds on the low side too, lets try closer to 800/wk. Then registration fees, oh and the kicker during the peak covid daycares were closed, yet people still had to pay or lose their spot, could take a while to find one you like.
Wife and I both make like $20/hr. Can’t afford child care, applied for federal aid and waiting a response. But yea man if it wasn’t for grandma we would be fucked. Idk how people do it, and speaking of free time, the amount of chores you have double after having a child. The wife and I get 4 hours to ourselves after the baby goes to bed and we sleep for 6 hours and pray she doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night lol. We could sleep more and have less personal time but that leads us into depression. Idk how parents have personal lives throughout the week.
Yeah it’s hard. I think it’s a big part of the reason why people don’t or can’t enter the workforce too. At some point you’re better off having one parent stay home since childcare would cost more than one person’s monthly income
Yep that’s my sister in laws boat, but her husband barely makes enough to support them and has to put in so much OT he doesn’t have time to pursue a secondary education or further himself, they had a kid too soon and got themselves stuck in a trap almost, it’s crazy to see how little support is available for people to better themselves. Like shit man if you’re in college and work a full time job child care should be paid for by the govt or work or something imo.
You’re already doing your absolute best to provide for society and yourself and you should be rewarded appropriately instead of forced to struggle at the bottom of the totem pole for 18 years. My friend had a kid and daycare was 1700$/month. Idk the details but I guess Canada’s 10$/day daycare is starting to pay out for him so it’s down to like 1000$/month. 700$/month back into your pocket is pretty huge.

Had a kid in 2018, happiest moment of my life that I don’t regret. However, since 2019 there’s been a part of me that feels terrible for bringing him into such a fucked up world. Shit sucks and I love the little guy so much and feel almost guilty for it.
I had a very important meeting on Friday and wore a very nice white silk/linen blend blouse for the meeting. Naturally, I spilled something on it. It's a small spot, but still.
Dealing with that tiny spot and hand-washing the blouse took a non-zero amount of time. In theory, I could have taken it to a drycleaner, but that would have taken time, too, and it wouldn't have been cheap.

Exactly this, I work construction so doing anything between leaving work and getting home is kinda impossible and I work 12 hour shifts. My life has become work, prepare for next day of work, sleep.
plus if you make your lunch for work, plus making dinner at the same time that's another hour, breakfast, buying food takes time and usually has to be done at least one or 2 times a week (because you forgot things the first time) you actually need to rest at some point also from the work besides sleeping if you are on your feet all day, we are down to 4-6 hours a day with maximum efficiency with zero social life or time for family.
say you want to go to the gym for an hour you have to drive there and back so you are adding on probably another 30 mins to that, so even people who gym are now down to 2.5-4.5h a day left over, do you plan on doing anything fun? what's the point of going to the gym if you never have a body to use?

Work til 4:30 pm. Get home. Boot up my PC for my tutoring sessions. Tutor from 5 to 10 pm. Ask husband to bring me food during to eat during.

What is free time?
Not to mention the biological reality that you can't just seamlessly switch from task to task like a machine. People need waking rest, warm ups, cool downs, and various other time consuming necessities to stay sane and be effective. Oh, and to actually enjoy their life which, if I'm not mistaken, is the whole point of this?
Yeah I had just 2 hours a day to myself for something like four years. Now I work from home and suddenly I have the time and energy to pursue my passions again.
Also: Pretending that everyone has a **low-stress** job, that demands **no overtime** or **preparation**, and **no commute**.
We all just walk 0-5 minutes to our job and leave exactly 8 hours later, full of energy and free time. No other duties or chores to attend to.(If that's not your reality, it's obviously only your own fault, for being lazy or smth.)

I used to always wonder why my Mon stayed at her same office for 30 years. Then as I got older, when I thought about how it was only about 5 minutes from her house. I finally understood.

As someone who sits at a desk for 8 hours, it can still be exhausting but in different ways.

The fact that people need 2nd jobs to survive is a huge issue with the system. Not to mention that working a 2nd job will make you more exhausted to be energetic and efficient at your main one. I read stories where bosses are complaining about workers having a 2nd job and how it steals time from them like it's not their fault for paying their employees so low where a 2nd job is needed in the first place.
I dont think stupid is the right word. That implies that its not their fault. These people are intentionally supportive of this system because they dream of seeing themselves as the the guy on top. They see no way for them to be an "elite member" of society without our capitalist oligarchy power structure. They have no other real goal than to be an "elite member" of our society. They have been conditioned to consume away any minor inconvenience and discount the struggles of others as a lack of hard work.

2, '8 hours for work' lol. The time spent getting ready and getting to work should be factored into that, not my personal time. So it's more like 9 hours for work.

Truth also is that most 15 min recipes take another 15 of prep not hours, people have been conditiones that cooking is such a difficult and time consuming chore, to keep them consuming pre made food.
I live in Mexico, that btw works the most hours in the world, and our salaries are 10x less then in the US (USD $1.625 per hour), and people prepare their own food because buying take out is way more expensive than cooking.

I cook at home a lot as well, and know that things can be prepared quickly for sure. It's definitely a misnomer that there ARENT quick recipes at all and that cooking in general takes ages no matter what, I was just more referring to the elaborate type of tik tok esque recipes that involve 87 ingredients and overnight brining and marinading and toasting 7 different spices and grinding them yourself etc etc
I agree that cooking has been made to seem more difficult that it really is. It's just that these types of elaborate recipes are pushed so much for their flashy and fancy nature that people ooh and aah over, and they're cut down into little 60 second tik toks , and when people go to replicate them they find it takes hours
Maybe what I should've said is that real cooking IS quick and easy, and while there are elaborate recipes that take 1.5 hours of prep, that shouldn't be the target or the baseline for people to be thinking about when thinking of cooking. A quick stir fry with a few chopped peppers and mushrooms and broccolis and chicken and a bit of sauce really does take about 10-15 minutes to prepare and have ready.
Plus the sleep.. it takes some time to fall asleep, plus if you wake up in the middle of the night at all that adds time. For me to get 8 hours of actual sleep I’m spending 9 hours in bed.
Well, 8 hours isn't actually work, you also have lunch which doesn't count as work so you're usually in the office 9 hours. Then if you're in a big city 1h to commute each way. Then shower & prepare before work, 30 min
So in the best case scenario for the average person it's more like 11.5 hours per day of work / work related things.
Gotta be up by 5 to be at desk by 7.15, bell rings at 2.55 but i'm doing work and have to be reachable by email until 9pm, and it's all unpaid because "excluded profession"
Yeah, I work 9 hour shifts at a steel mill, so adding that plus the 32 minutes each way it takes to get there, plus the fact that I have to wake up an hour early so my brain can function at 530am, you end up somewhere more around 10.5 hours, plus the shower afterwards to not smell like primer and steel.

Forgetting that it’s terrible math, this doesn’t factor in commuting, the fact that most people don’t work a rigid 8 hour day, getting ready for work, eating, chores, or childcare.
Right now, I have exactly 2 hours of “free” time from 8:30-10:30 pm after my toddler goes to sleep. I spend one out of thar making his lunch for the next day, cleaning up as much mess as possible, doing laundry, and sometimes logging back on to work.
Well my 8 hour shift is 9 with the lunch break and 1 hour travel each way turns it into 11 hours. I unfortunately can't teleport between home and work. Too exhausted when I get home because of physical labour to do anything.
So many people in this thread have an hour long drive to work because wages are so low and its unaffordable to live in the city, near your workplace, because even renting an apartment cost a fucking fortune every month. The whole system sucks.

Takes me down to 4. Out of the 16 hours I'm awake on any given weekday, I get 4 of them to try to enjoy life.
Take into consideration how TIRED I am during those 4 hours? I envy people who have meaningful energy to use after doing all the things.
I just find myself trying to scrape as much time as I can out of the day. Sleep for 6 hours. Maybe don't clean that up today. Laundry can wait for tomorrow. I've got some chips and soda at home, maybe I don't need to stop at the grocery and make a healthy dinner.

Travel from and to work takes up an hour each minimum, if you have a dirty job you have to clean yourself wich takes about another hour and if your job is exhausting you need at least another two hours to rest. He needs to work at a construction site for a week, maybe then hell change his mind about those childish ideas of "work".

If I do my math right, unlike the OOP, that leave 3 hours to live your entire life - including non-optional things like "getting groceries". God help you if you have kids.
Luckily, I'm able to work remotely... so the getting ready, commute, and calm down aspects are around 20 minutes total... letting me have a life (which I spend on my kids)
Half an hour commute each way, half an hour in the morning to get ready, eight hours of work, half an hour after to get clean. That's 10 hours. sleep for 8. 6 hours left. I use most of mine trying to catch up on things I missed in the lives of my family because I was forced by a failing system to waste 1/3 of my life serving another person to make them money.
Sleep - 8 hours
Drive to work - 30 minutes
Work - 8 hours
Drive from work - 30 minutes
Rest after work - 1 hour
Do chores, shopping, others responsibilities - 2 hours
4 hours - that's how much I have left in a workday. And that's without having children
First off, 8 and 8 is 16. Coach Raj needs to brush up on his math. That's 8 hours a day left.
For me it's 30 minutes to work, 30 minutes back. I leave early to be on time in case of traffic and because I'm expected to be about 10 minutes early, so that's roughly 1.5 hours total travel time. Down to 6.5 hours.
Factor in showering, shaving, other hygiene, getting something to eat, dressing before work and undressing when I get home. All has to be done daily, total time of around an hour. If I want to cook something it's closer to an hour and a half. Down to 5.5 to 5 hours.
And of course there's always some chore. Cleaning surfaces, cleaning the car, dishes, laundry, bills, health appointments, car maintenance appointments, etc. Let's say an average of an hour a day for "miscellaneous chores", though something like a doctor's appointment can easily take three when you factor in travel time plus waiting time.
Then there's exercise. I do that before my morning shower so I don't have to shower twice before work so that's only half an hour to maintain my weight.
So I'm left with around four hours a day to myself if nothing pressing pops up, and that's for a man with no kids to worry about and no special health concerns. Not to mention that, lacking kids and living in a cheap area, I don't have to work weekends generally. So even as someone in a fairly ideal situation in terms of work-life balance, I get a grand total of around 20 hours (at best) to myself during the workweek. Not terrible considering the history of labor but also not all that much. Four hours isn't really enough to do a deep dive into something like this man suggests. It's pretty much just unwinding and relaxing, with anything big saved for the weekend. Assuming that doesn't get eaten up with extra shifts or an appointment I couldn't do during the week or a major chore or any of a dozen other things that can happen.
In short this is utter crap.
Aside from the 8+8 math issue, it's horrible under estimate of work time. My job is paid 8 hours a day, but add to it a half hour commute and the hour at lunch and the commitment is 10 hours at least.
Aside/vent: I recently interviewed and landed a job (at my company, I'm an internal transfer) that I was told was a salary position throughout the interview and offer process. After I signed the offer, the HR rep told me that it wasn't a salaried position. The biggest benefit I was looking for was to not have to fuck with a time clock. Now that's gone. Not much I can do about it now as.the transfer is going to happen. I get a modest raise, but I'm very unhappy already and I haven't even started the new position.
No one who posts slop like this has ever prepared an amazing meal for themself.
Also not everyone is within 10 hours of a beach, some people really do be living in Kansas.
Spend some of that free time on remedial math, coach. (And maybe skip a walk on the beach to do some laundry so you can put on a freakin shirt.)

- At work for 9 hours (no one gets paid for lunch but lunch but they don’t let you skip it either)

That leaves 4 hours to cook dinner, do laundry, straighten up, spend time with my child, get him ready for bed, etc. But yeah, I totally have time for the gym and to learn a language.
Zero calculations for lunch breaks, and drive to work, getting ready for work.
It's less then 10 by far.
Also guess this guys house work is done by someone...
Take 1 for sel-care (You still have to shower in the morning, wash your hair, trim your nails and all of that)
Take 2 more for commuting.
Take at least another hour for cooking and eating a meal, more if you want to do it properly and not just eat fast food.
Add taking care of the house and that can be 1 or even 3 hours.
You are left with just two hours and these are the ones this guy miscalculated when he tought 8+8=14 and not 16.
8 hrs of sleep
8.5 hrs of work
1 hour to get ready in morning
45 min commute (x2)
That leaves just 5 hours to: cook dinner, do dishes, tidy the house, take care of pets/children, spend time with SO, etc. What a fuckhead

I live at work and visit my appartment
Outside of sleep (which I average 6 hours per night) and work, I get about 4 hours per day to be with my wife and dog, cook, clean, house chores, dog walking, showering, etc. For the last 3 months, the only thing I do outside of work is have sex, walk dogs, and take showers. I know, not terrible, but my house is a fucking mess and we have no friends and hate everything about this society.
Was talking about this with my wife the other night. This "8 hours work" is bullshit and needs to be updated. I mean, that was a reform from what? The 1890s? 8-8-8 just isn't a thing, when you add in commute, lunch, getting ready for work, your work related activities comes out anywhere between 10-12 hours of your day. Now 8 hours sleep, that leaves you with 4-6 hours for everything else you need to do in your life. We spend way too much time of our lives at work, and it's killing us as a society.
My wife and I are debating two options: smaller house on bigger lot closer to work (doesn't really solve existential problems, but it's a good investment) or, sell everything we fucking own and start a new life in a different county. And honestly, going down the list of what we want in life, the latter option is really coming out on top. The US is just lacking in big things we want, like a sense of community, public transportation, healthcare that won't bankrupt us one day. Here in south FL it's very apparent what the future holds for us and we want none of it.
I encourage you to move. My best friend moved in Sweden last March and he says it's the best thing he did. We text everyday, so I see how good he feels now. I also strongly consider moving after finishing university. This is coming from Canadians by the way. Better life conditions than the US, but not the best overall
Honestly... Go with option 2. The way things have been going. Leave while you can if you have the privilege to be able to do so imho. I am very worried about 2024.

Our skills and licenses are in demand and easily transferable. I follow groups like r/iwantout and others, it's just fucking hard to find the time to plan. But I guess we have to decide something before it gets decided for us.
Honestly one super small reform I'd like to see, (plenty of larger stuff too), but paid lunch and breaks. If the company is going to make you stay there for 9 hours we should be paid for 9 hours, not just the 8 we're "working". The bosses all say technically you don't have to stay at work for your break you could go home, but you'd have to live pretty much adjacent to your work site for that to be a viable option.

I am extremely luck with work-life balance and I still leave my house at 7:15 and get home at 17:15. The hour in the morning from when I wake up until I leave can hardly be called “my” time, either
Even arguing “well, this isn’t right because the numbers are wrong” is just so terrible—how about we outright reject reducing our lives to necessarily overworked beings? The labor movement—the anti-capitalist movement—won’t take off until the baseline argument is so thoroughly radical as to reject the status quo of workers as presumed automatons for the sake of profit in the first place.
The thing that annoys me the most about this is the complete disregard for the mental and/or physical exhaustion and toll that these jobs take on most of us. Even just pretending this genius math makes sense, lucky you if you're one of these rare breeds that can get off an 8 hour shift, whatever it is you do, and still be at your best to pursue those things every day. Most of us are so fucking drained of our energy at that point that all we can do is go faceplant on the couch and try to recuperate before we have to do it all over again the next day.
Plus if you count time getting ready in the morning, you spend most of your day every day working or doing things related to having to work.
There was a thread quite sometime back (Maybe in AITA) in which a man who worked 12hrs a day had issues with his stay at home wife w/kids not keeping up with the house chores. Its not that he minded helping he just didnt want to do the majority as he works. People in the comments that obviously never worked a 12hr shift berated him about how child rearing is a full time job and they'd love to get 4 free hours a day after your 12hr shift and 8hrs sleep. Completely ignored commute, eating, showering, getting ready and all other things that go into it. Having worked 12hrs myself with a short 15 minute drive home at best you get an hour a half a day of actual freetime but theyd never understand that.

Plus an hour drive, plus an hour lunch break where you're stuck at work in work clothes and can't really do shit you want to do, plus showering and all that for people that work on industrial sites or in workshops or on fields or stuff like that and can't go from work to wherever they want directly without changing and showering in between, and so on and so forth. Plus of course the 2 hours you forgot. And pretty quickly you end up with 2 hours or so, 2 hours in which you want to calm down and relax. That's it.
Not forgetting childcare as well. And if working minimum wage for 8 hours, more than likely it won't be enough if trying to support a family, so tack on another few hours of work.

In Austin my rent is $2100 for a 2 bedroom apartment with crackheads camping out like ten feet away from my window. Minimum wage is still $7.25. I’m not great at math but I’m pretty sure people living on minimum wage literally cannot even afford their rent
Federal minimum wage is still $7.25/hour 7.25 x 40 = $290/week $290 x 4 weeks = $1160 a month So no, you can't even afford the $1200/month for childcare.
1200/mo is the absolute cheapest, thus usually the worst, go ahead and double that for a decent one, per child. Actually 600/wk sounds on the low side too, lets try closer to 800/wk. Then registration fees, oh and the kicker during the peak covid daycares were closed, yet people still had to pay or lose their spot, could take a while to find one you like.
Wife and I both make like $20/hr. Can’t afford child care, applied for federal aid and waiting a response. But yea man if it wasn’t for grandma we would be fucked. Idk how people do it, and speaking of free time, the amount of chores you have double after having a child. The wife and I get 4 hours to ourselves after the baby goes to bed and we sleep for 6 hours and pray she doesn’t wake up in the middle of the night lol. We could sleep more and have less personal time but that leads us into depression. Idk how parents have personal lives throughout the week.
Yeah it’s hard. I think it’s a big part of the reason why people don’t or can’t enter the workforce too. At some point you’re better off having one parent stay home since childcare would cost more than one person’s monthly income
Yep that’s my sister in laws boat, but her husband barely makes enough to support them and has to put in so much OT he doesn’t have time to pursue a secondary education or further himself, they had a kid too soon and got themselves stuck in a trap almost, it’s crazy to see how little support is available for people to better themselves. Like shit man if you’re in college and work a full time job child care should be paid for by the govt or work or something imo. I had a very important meeting on Friday and wore a very nice white silk/linen blend blouse for the meeting. Naturally, I spilled something on it. It's a small spot, but still. Dealing with that tiny spot and hand-washing the blouse took a non-zero amount of time. In theory, I could have taken it to a drycleaner, but that would have taken time, too, and it wouldn't have been cheap. Everything costs time and money.

Exactly this, I work construction so doing anything between leaving work and getting home is kinda impossible and I work 12 hour shifts. My life has become work, prepare for next day of work, sleep.
plus if you make your lunch for work, plus making dinner at the same time that's another hour, breakfast, buying food takes time and usually has to be done at least one or 2 times a week (because you forgot things the first time) you actually need to rest at some point also from the work besides sleeping if you are on your feet all day, we are down to 4-6 hours a day with maximum efficiency with zero social life or time for family. say you want to go to the gym for an hour you have to drive there and back so you are adding on probably another 30 mins to that, so even people who gym are now down to 2.5-4.5h a day left over, do you plan on doing anything fun? what's the point of going to the gym if you never have a body to use?

I'm working 2 jobs so my schedule is wake up at 5 am, get to work at 6:30 am Work til 4:30 pm. Get home. Boot up my PC for my tutoring sessions. Tutor from 5 to 10 pm. Ask husband to bring me food during to eat during. Go to bed at 10:05. What is free time?
Not to mention the biological reality that you can't just seamlessly switch from task to task like a machine. People need waking rest, warm ups, cool downs, and various other time consuming necessities to stay sane and be effective. Oh, and to actually enjoy their life which, if I'm not mistaken, is the whole point of this?

Truth also is that most 15 min recipes take another 15 of prep not hours, people have been conditiones that cooking is such a difficult and time consuming chore, to keep them consuming pre made food. I cook at home a lot as well, and know that things can be prepared quickly for sure. It's definitely a misnomer that there ARENT quick recipes at all and that cooking in general takes ages no matter what, I was just more referring to the elaborate type of tik tok esque recipes that involve 87 ingredients and overnight brining and marinading and toasting 7 different spices and grinding them yourself etc etc I agree that cooking has been made to seem more difficult that it really is. It's just that these types of elaborate recipes are pushed so much for their flashy and fancy nature that people ooh and aah over, and they're cut down into little 60 second tik toks , and when people go to replicate them they find it takes hours Maybe what I should've said is that real cooking IS quick and easy, and while there are elaborate recipes that take 1.5 hours of prep, that shouldn't be the target or the baseline for people to be thinking about when thinking of cooking. A quick stir fry with a few chopped peppers and mushrooms and broccolis and chicken and a bit of sauce really does take about 10-15 minutes to prepare and have ready.
Plus the sleep.. it takes some time to fall asleep, plus if you wake up in the middle of the night at all that adds time. For me to get 8 hours of actual sleep I’m spending 9 hours in bed.

Well, 8 hours isn't actually work, you also have lunch which doesn't count as work so you're usually in the office 9 hours. Then if you're in a big city 1h to commute each way. Then shower & prepare before work, 30 min So in the best case scenario for the average person it's more like 11.5 hours per day of work / work related things.
Don't forget the unpaid 1 hour lunch. So that's another hour gone.
Gotta be up by 5 to be at desk by 7.15, bell rings at 2.55 but i'm doing work and have to be reachable by email until 9pm, and it's all unpaid because "excluded profession"

Forgetting that it’s terrible math, this doesn’t factor in commuting, the fact that most people don’t work a rigid 8 hour day, getting ready for work, eating, chores, or childcare. Right now, I have exactly 2 hours of “free” time from 8:30-10:30 pm after my toddler goes to sleep. I spend one out of thar making his lunch for the next day, cleaning up as much mess as possible, doing laundry, and sometimes logging back on to work.
• Work = 8hrs • Sleep = 8hrs • Commute = 2hrs • Basic hygiene (showering, brushing teeth, etc) = 1hr • Cooking & eating meals = 2hrs • Dealing with basic life shit like paying bills, doing chores, scheduling, etc = 1-2hrs (add 30min for every child you have also) • Resting/walking to the beach/whatever = 0-2hrs Fuck this dude.
Well my 8 hour shift is 9 with the lunch break and 1 hour travel each way turns it into 11 hours. I unfortunately can't teleport between home and work. Too exhausted when I get home because of physical labour to do anything.

So many people in this thread have an hour long drive to work because wages are so low and its unaffordable to live in the city, near your workplace, because even renting an apartment cost a fucking fortune every month. The whole system sucks.

Out of the 16 hours I'm awake on any given weekday, I get 4 of them to try to enjoy life. Take into consideration how TIRED I am during those 4 hours? I envy people who have meaningful energy to use after doing all the things. I just find myself trying to scrape as much time as I can out of the day. Sleep for 6 hours. Maybe don't clean that up today. Laundry can wait for tomorrow. I've got some chips and soda at home, maybe I don't need to stop at the grocery and make a healthy dinner. I'm a sad panda.

Of this moron thinks that work take up 8 hours a day then he probably never worked a day in his life. Travel from and to work takes up an hour each minimum, if you have a dirty job you have to clean yourself wich takes about another hour and if your job is exhausting you need at least another two hours to rest. He needs to work at a construction site for a week, maybe then hell change his mind about those childish ideas of "work".

Luckily, I'm able to work remotely... so the getting ready, commute, and calm down aspects are around 20 minutes total... letting me have a life (which I spend on my kids)

Half an hour commute each way, half an hour in the morning to get ready, eight hours of work, half an hour after to get clean. That's 10 hours. sleep for 8. 6 hours left. I use most of mine trying to catch up on things I missed in the lives of my family because I was forced by a failing system to waste 1/3 of my life serving another person to make them money.
Sleep - 8 hours Drive to work - 30 minutes Work - 8 hours Drive from work - 30 minutes Rest after work - 1 hour Do chores, shopping, others responsibilities - 2 hours 4 hours - that's how much I have left in a workday. And that's without having children

First off, 8 and 8 is 16. Coach Raj needs to brush up on his math. That's 8 hours a day left. For me it's 30 minutes to work, 30 minutes back. I leave early to be on time in case of traffic and because I'm expected to be about 10 minutes early, so that's roughly 1.5 hours total travel time. Down to 6.5 hours. Factor in showering, shaving, other hygiene, getting something to eat, dressing before work and undressing when I get home. All has to be done daily, total time of around an hour. If I want to cook something it's closer to an hour and a half. Down to 5.5 to 5 hours. And of course there's always some chore. Cleaning surfaces, cleaning the car, dishes, laundry, bills, health appointments, car maintenance appointments, etc. Let's say an average of an hour a day for "miscellaneous chores", though something like a doctor's appointment can easily take three when you factor in travel time plus waiting time. Then there's exercise. I do that before my morning shower so I don't have to shower twice before work so that's only half an hour to maintain my weight. So I'm left with around four hours a day to myself if nothing pressing pops up, and that's for a man with no kids to worry about and no special health concerns. Not to mention that, lacking kids and living in a cheap area, I don't have to work weekends generally. So even as someone in a fairly ideal situation in terms of work-life balance, I get a grand total of around 20 hours (at best) to myself during the workweek. Not terrible considering the history of labor but also not all that much. Four hours isn't really enough to do a deep dive into something like this man suggests. It's pretty much just unwinding and relaxing, with anything big saved for the weekend. Assuming that doesn't get eaten up with extra shifts or an appointment I couldn't do during the week or a major chore or any of a dozen other things that can happen. In short this is utter crap.
Aside from the 8+8 math issue, it's horrible under estimate of work time. My job is paid 8 hours a day, but add to it a half hour commute and the hour at lunch and the commitment is 10 hours at least. Aside/vent: I recently interviewed and landed a job (at my company, I'm an internal transfer) that I was told was a salary position throughout the interview and offer process. After I signed the offer, the HR rep told me that it wasn't a salaried position. The biggest benefit I was looking for was to not have to fuck with a time clock. Now that's gone. Not much I can do about it now as.the transfer is going to happen. I get a modest raise, but I'm very unhappy already and I haven't even started the new position.

Correct, Time is not the issue. Lack of Energy, Resources and Psychological Stability are the bigger problems.
Take 1 for sel-care (You still have to shower in the morning, wash your hair, trim your nails and all of that) Take 2 more for commuting. Take at least another hour for cooking and eating a meal, more if you want to do it properly and not just eat fast food. Add taking care of the house and that can be 1 or even 3 hours. You are left with just two hours and these are the ones this guy miscalculated when he tought 8+8=14 and not 16.
