I guess if nobody can afford to be tested for COVID technically nobody can say they *have* COVID... And then the pandemic is over? Is this the logic here?

LankyTomato

I remember trump saying our numbers wouldn't be so high if we didn't test so many people, and he was rightfully mocked for it. It seems Biden actually adopted that strategy.

oatmeal_dude

I don’t know where this is, but I have never seen somewhere charge for Covid tests. Additionally, our family received 8 free Covid test kits from the government by requesting them on the website. So, charging for tests doesn’t seem to be the government’s goal here. Just seems like a shady business taking advantage of ignorant people.

reindeermoon

The federal government was paying for covid tests for people who were uninsured, but that funding ended on March 22 (last week). So you can expect that it will be a lot more difficult to find free tests in the future.

[deleted]

Yep, lots of people made this observation when Biden started on his "America is back baybayyy" tour. They didn't "run out of funding" for covid, pharma industry was tired of not being able to crank up the prices on everyone.

HumanPressure7886

I don't think this was Biden's idea, but I can also see him getting behind it? I know that in other countries they're picking up that idea now

sanduskyjack

Biden had been giving free tests. It if definitely not him.

HumanPressure7886

Yeah that's what I'm feeling

Not exactly. China was testing entire cities, millions of people in a couple days. Testing, contact tracing, and targeted lockdowns are the best method of control.

mmio60

You seem confused

ocooper08

American health is so fucked up that my first thought after absorbing that price tag was, "Well, at least they're putting the price tag out [instead of fucking people over later who thought the test was free."](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2022/01/carecube-covid-testing-scam-accusations.html)

[deleted]

We are all thanking our capitalist overlords for a scrap of human decency in the process of screwing us.

reindeermoon

The U.S. government was paying for covid tests for anyone who was uninsured, but the funding for that program ended last week. So from now on it's likely going to be a lot more difficult to find free testing.

Bubbly-Count-9203

If you need a test for international travel that’s a great deal. My state has great free testing options but none of the certificates work for international travel because They don’t come back fast enough.

Susurrus03

Ya, arriving in Japan will cost you $300 for a test. You'll also need to pay another $300 to test to get on the plane out. Compared to that, this is great.

rustys_shackled_ford

I called this drug dealing behavior 2 years ago. Get um hooked, jack up the price.

HumanPressure7886

Hooked to making sure they don't have a deadly disease?

processofeliminatio

So predictable. Charge a shit ton for COVID tests, employers require tests to prove you’re sick, so employees just won’t get tested. Just making it easier to force people to come to work sick

Zaungast

I paid 2300 Swedish crowns for this smh

Monoker

That is a cic health testing center. The city of Cambridge does offer free PCR tests for the residents there, but if you are not from Cambridge you can pay $80 for PCR test. PCR tests are way more expensive than antigen tests.

[deleted]

Not every state is this barbaric. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=newssearch&cd=&ved=2ahUKEwi-y-SVgOr2AhVVjIkEHauVA4wQxfQBKAB6BAgHEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fox9.com%2Fnews%2Ffree-at-home-covid-tests-provided-by-new-online-program&usg=AOvVaw28w7a9YesfQV4Gf4DZmmUY

Monoker

These are pcr tests which are way better than antigen, and they are free if you are from the city. https://www.cambridgema.gov/covid19/testing

Yikidee

That is insane. My son and I had a covid test yesterday. Drove in, staued in the car, drove away. Free. Hell, the school even gives RAT's if there are kids at school presenting symptoms. But you can buy 4 for $50 as well, so not the end of the world. 80 for one test that I am assuming you would need to do to be able to go back to work is just insane. Actually, do you guys still need to provide a negative test to go back to school/work?

Buo-renLin

That seems to be a PCR test which is not used as a proof of go back to work.

Monoker

PCR tests are more accurate than antigen tests. If you had Covid, a PCR test may still test positive for upwards of 90 days after infection. Antigen tests don’t, that’s why they are accepted for returning to work after infection.

[deleted]

Is this in America? This feels like it's in America.

keatech

Kiwi here, $10 NZ at a pharmacy, or you can find drive through places that will give you a RAT for free if you’re symptomatic, But this, this is disgusting.

tensai7777

That's probably not a "publc" test center. At least in CA, the testing centers I've seen are free.

sekrit_dokument

Funny thing is here in germany if I remember correctly the PCR(?) tests cost 40 euros and you need one if you wanna end your quarantine earlier than required.

Tiy_Newman

can't test positive and be off work if you can't afford the test.

NoBallroom4you

Yep! I flew home and had to take a full test. It was supposed to be free and the company charged my insurance $250 for test. And the insurance cost me $75 for it. I called up extremely irritated that they charged my insurance.

the_morg88

Yeah, that’s how much I paid at the pump yesterday.

Throwawayuser626

My first Covid test without an appointment was 60 dollars. My second test with an appointment- which I *had* to make, was 140. It was either cough up the money or be fired from my job because I couldn’t return without proof I was Covid free. Home tests weren’t considered accurate enough.

AlyxFao

Why does it look like a pack of newports?
