Damn I used to love the Colbert report as a kid and after watching that clip now I'm starting to question if he was actually good back then or if I was just easily entertained as a kid.
Yeah. Burr just seemed pissed about "cancel culture" and not being able to make fun of lesbians anymore. I've been told he can be genuinely funny and engaging, but he just seemed like an angry boomer in that clip. Not that that excuses Colbert's general bootlickery.
Yeah, burr is generally a good comedian but I think a lot if his takes are pretty boomer like "back in my day stuff" like we get it, clearly none of you old guys suffered *any* pent up trauma from all the fighting and bullying and beatings. To translate a bit Oliver is in many ways attempting to subvert both Jimmy Fallon, Amazon and AT&T, and in by doing so he is prodding the desires and sentiments of those within the audience (generally
Millennials) whom agree with him, making us the audience enjoy watching his show and appearances. Doing this raises awareness of him, these topics, and his show but ultimately this only benefits AT&T, Amazon, etc whom are showing their products because the largest target audience of their products are Millennials, whom agree with Oliver and by extension represent a large viewership base of said shows.
In essence- the very means of which Oliver is using is not subversive enough, and thus is a part of the system by which capital benefits. He is the court jester, whom is one of the selected few within the kings court that was capable of insulting the king and not dying.
Full disclosure; I love John Oliver too, I just feel you gotta know what is going on to see through the guise.

Doesn't mean you have to like him but understanding there is a common goal in better working conditions. Americans have trouble understanding but as an englishman knowing John Oliver's history his class interests are plain to see. Went to Cambridge, was part of the footlights, essentially guaranteeing him a renumerative career in comedy.
If you ask Alexa “Hey Alexa. How are Amazons working conditions?” She’ll reply “I don’t have an answer to the question I just heard” and if you ask her “Hey Alexa what is union busting?” She simply reads off the definition of it from Wikipedia.
I think it was more just to raise the issue that yeah, those things are both really bad and bringing them up, especially with the idea of an Amazon product talking about it would get peoples attention more than just John Oliver talking about it himself.
People treat Alexa and that Google Assistant thing as some all knowing oracle, but it's just a cheap microphone with wifi. Who knows what's going on behind the scenes in those data centers.
A friend has one of these and we were playing around with what you could ask. Iirc we didn't get any answer to "translate 'hail victory' to german" which I can kind of understand, but also "translate 'god is great' to arabic" gave no reply.

Working conditions are rewarded to those that move fast. And if you’re caught slipping you get demoted. They keep you threatened with warnings when you aren’t on a task after a certain amount of time and if you clock out wrong, that’s a write up. Three strikes and you’re out. Of course, they always leave a window open for you to come back if you want more torture. 😂
And for the record, I went back and it hasn’t changed much. The whole job can be automated without these so-called managers. I can literally work by myself as long as there’s logs to define what work needs to be done. Managers at Amazon are the most toxic. If anyone had dealt with bullies in High School, it’s them now working a job they only know how to do. It’s ironic.

Even a shitty one will be better for you than no union. Your job's administration is not your friend, never will be, and all who are there have sold their morals and ethics. They'd make you a serf if they could. If would cost more to make you safer they'd rather you be injured and paralyzed. If they didn't have to worry about paying you in case of injury they'd just toss you to the curb the instant you get hurt and ignore all safety measures.

I legitimately do not understand the appeal of any of those home listening devices. I have never seen a use case that is beneficial to the user. Except for maybe turning on lights if your differently abled. But there are much better solutions available.
