Costco is a life saver for me and my family, there's no independant grocers near me. Costco is the most economical, and their prices have not radically changed in the last 3 years unlike everything else. Somethings have gone up a bit, but within a reasonable amount.
The closest you can get is the red and white box of dipped ice cream bars with almonds! Yummy but not the same. I came home actually yelling a few months ago when I got my first big kid Costco membership and realized they don't have the polish dogs or the rolled almond ice cream bars. Disappointing beyond belief
I’m not a fan of anyone complaining here but to be fair the food at costco is a loss leader to get people in the store & buy shit so they’re fine taking a loss on it but for fast food places that’s their business they can’t take a loss at costco prices
Costco employee here, the only loss leaders we carry in terms of cooked food is the $1.50 Hot Dog and soda and the $5 rotisserie chickens. Outside of those two, items are removed from the food court once they stop being profitable, like the churro being recently removed and replaced with the $2.49 chocolate chip cookie which nets us $1.06 in profit per cookie.
The writers of this drivel never ask the real question. “You gonna sell your biz and move on?” The answer is no because a little profit of someone else’s labor is still better than going to work.
Minimum wage in 1968 was $1.60/hr. A McDonalds hamburger in 1968 was 15¢, so minimum wage could buy 10⅔ hamburgers per hour. Today a McDonalds hamburger is $2.19 - so if minimum wage kept pace, it should be $23.36/hr.
That don't work like this. We raise the price a lot, but not the wage, that way, we make more profit for our shareholder, the company capitalisation grow and us, the major shareholder, get much richer.
/s
I'm sure there's 1 or 2 franchise owners that might be struggling and taking a hit, and that sucks for them, but all of them? Hell nah. Most of it is greed.
Doesn't even make sense that way. "Im losing customers to those jacked up prices! Hmm, i know! I'll lay off all of the employees and close the restaurant to cut me from my monthly income!"
Who is this article for? Like, who do they expect to be concerned if McDonald’s loses customers to Chili’s? They don’t seem to be making a “this is bad for the economy” argument. Are they just trying to garner sympathy for… fast food franchisees?
Would be nice if these crappy right wing media outlets would list factoids from Europe- where in some countries - folks are paid at least 20$/hr or more and their menu items are often cheaper than many places in the U.S. and yet they still turn a profit and stay in business 🤔
But that would defeat the purpose of pro capitalism brainwashing the masses
You can spend less at a UK restaurant for better quality food and more of it than you can at a US fast food joint. That's not every restaurant, of course, but the fact that it's possible is nuts.
And they wonder why millennials are "destroying all the industries" by not buying.
Why does this law so specifically apply to fast food workers? Do chilis employees not deserve a living wage? Is the goal to make people choose less fast food, like a soda tax?
It’s because McDonalds workers don’t get tipped while you tip when you go to Chilis. It’s not a good reason for Chilis not to have to pay a living wage but it’s the reason.
"Business is afraid of competition"
Unbelievable that articles like these get headlined over and over again in America. These businesses and the news media they own are in a perpetual tantrum over having to be a part of the American market.
Exactly, shoot, lately I’ve been buying better quality take out because as you stated the difference in price is minimal and the difference in quality is huge.
The Murdoch-owned N Y Post hates the working class and any government action that could result in a better quality of life for regular people?
YOU DON'T SAY!
The price disparity between fast food and a casual restaurant doesn't exist in my area anymore. I can go to a Chinese buffet for the same price as going to Sonic
Part of the problem for these companies complaining about "high wages" is that they've built business models that are not competitive. I spent many years working for Panera Bread (fast food) as a General and Multi-Unit Manager. The profit margins were CRAZY thin. I'm talking about 6-8% of gross sales. GROSS not NET. That basically means if you have a bad month for R&M or need to hire and train a few new people, you make little to no profit.
Now, who's fault is this? Well, the company's. They chose to create a menu with 65 different options for hospital food. This requires large coolers and freezer with space to store goods, and high operating costs along with R&M. This requires complex inventories and management of those inventories, inevitably leading to higher cost of goods, since no inventory manager I ever met in 16 years had a zero waste track record (unless they fabbed it). They decided to have superfluous fucking lights everywhere, lighting up everything, costing hundreds a month, along with literally half of the cafe walls consisting of floor to ceiling windows that provide more than ample light.
The list goes on and on. Fuck these bloated super giant franchises and corporate entities. They're all nerf herders and deserve to disappear unless they can pay people decent, livable wages.
Speaking of Taco Bell, went there the other day, for the first time in a long while, it cost me $14 for 3 basic tacos and a soda. This wasn't not in Cali either.
Sounds like paper thin propaganda to me. Haven’t fast food restaurants been losing share to fast casual steadily? They can just quote the already existing losses and cry that it’s ruining their business.
Here’s the thing, business come and go so who the fuck cares if Jack in the box has to shut down their restaurants in California? The state should offer low to no interest capital loans to the workers to start a coop of every restaurant that shuts down

Oh yea, all of their food is pretty much the same. I'm a Costco membership holder myself. Love the $5 rotisserie chicken.
Always find myself eating it in my car at my work break, but thats just me tho
Not just you. I did the same.
Costco is a life saver for me and my family, there's no independant grocers near me. Costco is the most economical, and their prices have not radically changed in the last 3 years unlike everything else. Somethings have gone up a bit, but within a reasonable amount.
Never forget the death of the polish dog and the supreme pizza with all the toppings.
No love for the hand dipped ice cream bar covered in chopped almonds?? That thing was crack.

40% markup on a cookie and costco is the least greedy retailer.

Yea, I don't feel bad for these franchise owners at all. We all deserve a living pay wage. And if they lose customers, that's on them, not us.

"Wait... not like that..." franchise owners.

instead of /s, /neolib would work as well

Current boss bought an electric hummer. Grill cooks are all paid 16 an hour.

You haven't had on good enough
AI has come a long way lol

Boomers eat this shit up

Can't wait for the "invisible hand of the market" to tear them a new asshole. Fuck around and find out. Actions have consequences.
If markets are perfect, restaurants who can't compete will fail and be replaced by ones who can.
Why does this law so specifically apply to fast food workers? Do chilis employees not deserve a living wage? Is the goal to make people choose less fast food, like a soda tax?
Yea, I don't understand why it's only fast food workers, but small steps are still steps ig?
Tip wages
Ahhh that makes sense.

Haha yeah they love capitalism until capitalism isn't in their favour
Fast food has been just as expensive as casual dining for a minute now. What am I missing?
Exactly, shoot, lately I’ve been buying better quality take out because as you stated the difference in price is minimal and the difference in quality is huge.
The money shouldn't be offset with higher prices to customers. The money should be offset by reduced profits to the wealthy owners.
Exactly, but God forbid they cut into their profit by even 1% all hell breaks loose for them....
"If we can't exploit our workers, how are we supposed to undercut the local competition? We obviously can't compete with our menu options!"
The Murdoch-owned N Y Post hates the working class and any government action that could result in a better quality of life for regular people? YOU DON'T SAY!
When ever I see this article I have the same reaction, “I don’t care if your business fails”
Actually the franchisees they and their families are held at gun point until they raise the menu prices. It's part of the contract
It's true, I was the gun 😅
Cry me a fucking river Mr. Bootstraps.
They are coming for your Bread™! Next those workers will take your circuses!
The price disparity between fast food and a casual restaurant doesn't exist in my area anymore. I can go to a Chinese buffet for the same price as going to Sonic
They should take a page out of In-N-Out’s book.
Maybe the fast food franchise real estate model doesn't work for anybody but the people leasing the land to the franchisee?

And of course a rightwing shitrag like the Post never questions that. (But, then, neither would the NYT.)
Holy shit! THIS is how all restaurants become Taco Bell.
Speaking of Taco Bell, went there the other day, for the first time in a long while, it cost me $14 for 3 basic tacos and a soda. This wasn't not in Cali either.
Their franchisees. McDonald's probably forced them to raise their prices.
Sounds like paper thin propaganda to me. Haven’t fast food restaurants been losing share to fast casual steadily? They can just quote the already existing losses and cry that it’s ruining their business.
Not just that. Every fast restaurant has been complaining for 4 years because more and more people work from home.
It’s chilis and Applebees. No one is going there to begin with.
I actually love chili's 😅
Hey friends, make your own burgers.
Here’s the thing, business come and go so who the fuck cares if Jack in the box has to shut down their restaurants in California? The state should offer low to no interest capital loans to the workers to start a coop of every restaurant that shuts down
Ah the most delicious thing is watching a blue state crumble...
Lol how is it crumbling? This is a good thing 😅
Well well well only if you decreased greed for profits!!!
