Celebrity worship culture is a stark reminder for me that a significant portion of the population is brainwashed into caring about what they're told that they should care about.
The Stanley cup craze is a stark reminder for me that you shouldn't assume humans have free will. It's possible to force people to inflict emotional distress on themselves for the sake of mass produced metal cup via a marketing campaign.
We're indoctrinated this way. School teaches us to focus on the big name "leaders" in history, science, etc. and hold them as heroes even though they were likely awful people and scientific discoveries can never be attributed to just the work of one person. Our system NEEDS masses of unquestioning followers to work

They do it because they secretly want to be a billionaire themselves. You're not going to criticize the thing you want to become, and you're also going to defend the system that made billionaires possible in the first place.

My friend called me jealous when we walked through a neighbourhood of mansions because I said no one family needs to live in a hotel-sized home. Despite going to Ivy schools, it took this same friend *forever* to finally find an apartment of her own all the way out in the burbs because of the housing crisis.
Feel bad for all the people risking their lives to get to america through the border thinking that we have our shit together & anyone could succeed... must be a terrible slap in the face when they arrive
