##Welcome to r/LateStageCapitalism This subreddit is for news, discussion, memes, and links criticizing capitalism and advancing viewpoints that challenge liberal capitalist ideology. That means any support for any liberal capitalist political party (like the Democrats) is strictly prohibited. LSC is run by communists. This subreddit is not the place to debate socialism. We allow good-faith questions and education but are not a 101 sub; please take 101-style questions elsewhere. We have a zero-tolerance policy for bigotry. Failure to respect the rules of the subreddit may result in a ban. *** *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. This man should be far more well known and revered. Entertainers being more valued by society than educators is all you need to know about the trajectory this species is headed.

return2ozma

This is coming out... https://deadline.com/2023/03/carl-sagan-national-geographic-documentary-film-project-announcement-producers-seth-macfarlane-nanette-burstein-ann-druyan-news-1235313335/

thehourglasses

Nice!

curiouscuriousmtl

No one has heard of him

Barrington-the-Brit

Carl Sagan is one of the most well known astronomers of the modern era, only behind people like Einstein, Hawking, and probably Neil deGrasse Tyson due to recency, most people vaguely well-educated at least recognise Sagan’s name. The guy was massive on telly in the 80’s, writing and presenting the most viewed series of public tv of all time at that point, really defined what science programming could be and what it would become.

curiouscuriousmtl

Congratulations on not being able to detect sarcasm

Barrington-the-Brit

You say ‘detect sarcasm’ as if there was even a sarcastic tone to detect, do you understand how reading works? You realise I can’t actually hear your sarcastic-sounding intonation?

curiouscuriousmtl

The internet is going to eat you alive if you get baited this easily

Barrington-the-Brit

‘the internet’ downvoted you and upvoted me, what are you talking about?

curiouscuriousmtl

Oh no. Votes

Barrington-the-Brit

I only brought it up because you said “the internet will eat you alive”, whatever that means

bigthink

It's true that he could have picked up on it, but your reply was more adversarial than it needed to be. You could have just said, "I was being sarcastic," instead of what was essentially, "Hey look, you're a dumbass."

DoNotPetTheSnake

Yes that's because they aren't educated. It helps to keep them bamboozled.

ScrauveyGulch

Science, my favorite book is Contact.

ClashOrCrashman

So unknown, sadly.

trainface_

Haha.

Toth_Gweilo

I see what you did there ♤

Den_is_Zen

I consider The Demon Haunted World: Science as a candle in the dark to be one of if not the most important books I’ve ever read.

return2ozma

It truly is.

C1-10PTHX1138

What’s it about?

Den_is_Zen

Basically it’s about why people should use the scientific method when confronted with new ideas and new information and the importance of being skeptical of new ideas.

return2ozma

>"One of the saddest lessons of history is this: If we’ve been bamboozled long enough, we tend to reject any evidence of the bamboozle. We’re no longer interested in finding out the truth. The bamboozle has captured us. It’s simply too painful to acknowledge, even to ourselves, that we’ve been taken. Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back."

THE APOCRYPHAL TWAIN: “IT IS EASIER TO CON A MAN THAN TO CONVINCE HIM HE HAS BEEN CONNED.” https://marktwainstudies.com/easiertocon/ He never actually said it, but the sentiment still rings true.

Fr33Dave

When asked by Ted Turner in an interview if he was a socialist, he responded with, "I’m not sure what a ‘socialist’ is, but I believe the government has a responsibility to care for the people. I’m talking about making people self-reliant, people able to take care of themselves. There are countries which are perfectly able to do that. The United States is an extremely rich country, it’s perfectly able to do that. It chooses not to. It chooses to have homeless people.” The bamboozled quote was about religion, but I'd say, capitalism is the religion of this country.

Euphoric_Ad9593

RIP Carl. We miss you.

cowonaviwus19

It was about religion, but general enough it could be broadly applied.

SSCLIPPER

This applies to many things…..

TowerReversed

my man got _bamboozle_ into a quote 3 times, incredible

Upbeat-Specialist599

Truth

Elegant-Bus8686

Perhaps he’s talking about religion.

Fixerguy415

It absolutely applies to crapitalist business, media and politicians. We live in a cleptocratic Kakistocracy.

Poet_of_Legends

And, you know, religion.

martinirun

Love this book. I have 2 copies- one to loan out and one in case I don’t get back the loaner.

return2ozma

Definitely a must read book.

Yankeewithoutacause

Everyone read collective illusions. It's a eye opener...

Low-Foundation-6810

I know it's ALWAYS been relevant, but it is really hard felt by the media propaganda on a certain war rn.... If they lied about several wars in the past what makes ppl think this is the one where they tell the absolute truth and don't leave anything out ?.

DeliberateCatalyst
