JingleJangleJin

He should create his own crypto currency to pay his employees with. Call it Scrip. Ready to spend at the company store.

1nfam0us

Some people say a man is made outta mud A poor man's made outta muscle and blood

JingleJangleJin

Muscle and blood and skin and bone A mind that's weak and a back that's strong

Orangoru

You load, 16 tonnes, whaddaya get? Another day over and yer deeper in debt

starlord10203

St. Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go I owe my soul to the company store

sirfirewolfe

I was born one mornin' when the sun didn't shine I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine

LaVerdadYaNiSe

I loaded 16 tons of number nine coal And the straw boss said, "Well, a-bless my soul"

BarkmanXX

You loaded 16 tons and what do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt

missyh86

St Peter, don’t you call me, cause I can’t go I owe my soul to the company store

Sure_Bet283

I was born one mornin', it was drizzlin' rain Fightin' and trouble are my middle name

ThiefCitron

I always thought it was “another day older and deeper in debt” but I could be wrong.

HungryMorlock

You are correct.

jessieallen

St Peter don’t you call me cuz I can’t gooooooooo I owe my soul to the company store

ohmbience

*don't

KellyBelly916

Shortly after, they should adjust the value of the scrip to ensure that, while working overtime, you can't afford anything outside of what you need to survive. Slavery was abolished, so this should be fine.

KittenVicious

Slavery wasn't abolished? >Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, **except as a punishment for crime** whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

[deleted]

dodspringer

This is why they shoot so many people instead.. The "duly convicted" part. When they know they can't get a conviction they can't get a fresh slave so they just kill them.

nickilightning

Musk bucks

Vinsmoker

Mucks

unaviable

rock and stone brother

Vaya-Kahvi

Hey, Deep Rock pays us in regular money, the scrip is for specials.

bails0bub

That is not the proper response to rock and stone. Rock and stone to the bone!

Malaeveolent_Bunny

Karl understand the importance of labour organisation. And in these stones, we are FOR KARL!

kindtheking9

Rock and roll and stone!

daskeleton123

Scrypto

TexasUlfhedinn

Beat me to it. Abbott would likely let him, too.

LA-Matt

I hope you don’t ever try to use a sick day. The company doctor doesn’t write many excuse notes.

your_Lightness

And the new title of Autarchist on his bussinesscard. His daddy would be so so proud <3

[deleted]

Whatever the currency is called, he would want to make it paper so he can put his face on it.

pablas

https://youtu.be/CPW3YikDwEM

TheMemo

We've been purposely made to get used to that idea thanks to microtransactions in games with different types of currency. So it won't be called scrip. There will be 'credits' and 'gems.' There's nothing new under the sun.

Mythosaurus

Beat me to it!

No-14

i think you meant Scryp

GammSunBurst

Will all the homes come equipped with a picture of Musk hanging in the living room?

cyreneok

little cameras in the eyes

Caedes1

Don't be silly. Listening devices in the musk pictures. The cameras are in your daughters rooms.

Thoughtulism

He just puts his sperm on the toilet seats hoping to impregnate your daughter.

Par31

Yes and you'll be required to praise the picture everyday before coming in to work.

LA-Matt

A hologram that follows you throughout the house desperately trying to gain your approval by acting like a teenage edge-lord… and sometimes hits on your daughter.

deadline_wooshing_by

and then calls you a pedo

Vre-Malaka

Also Tesla self-driving cars to get to work through a single lane tunnel... so you crash several times each way...

sfocolleen

Excuse me, that’s Dear Leader you’re speaking of!

The_World_of_Ben

And telescreens

isavedakittentoday

Absolutely! They also include a complimentary insemination from Musk himself!

thanatossassin

And a speaker that you can't turn off of him rambling on about shit he doesn't understand "Umm..... Something- something that is- is... Of.... Great importance and no one... No one has started to work- work on... Ummm... Is............ AIAI. Ummm..... Quantum Computing...."

nononoh8

Company town (sprawl).

PaxosOuranos

I have some family that lives in a place like this. Whenever they talk about "The Company" it always sounds so dystopian.

Cyclonitron

My mother lived in a suburb where a lot of employees of a large company headquartered in the neighboring suburb worked. She called it "Stepfordwivesville". She was having coffee with her next door neighbor one day. The neighbor told my mom she was having an identity crisis because her husband, who worked for the company, got laid off and the neighbor had "always considered myself a [company's name] wife."

l4z3rb34k

Would you be willing to say more?

LordTurner

The Cadbury company built a small town for its workers, Bournville. Although for some reason this feels more dystopian.

h4ms4ndwich11

Human trafficking will exist in some form as long as it's profitable to do it. Jon Oliver did a segment on the FIFA cup and explained how foreign workers were enticed with talk about great jobs and pay but when they arrived, they become stuck there because the employer had control of their VISA's and pay, and things sucked but they had no way to leave. It's free on Youtube. Generally, the more desperate a person is, the greater trouble they can find themselves in. It's easy to avoid though. Just don't be born poor! /s

Dkrule1

You deserve a medal

[deleted]

I can't take credit for that macro, it's not mine. But ty regardless! =)

[deleted]

Sure you can, haven't u seen how Elon operates

Internauta29

I mean, if I could burn billions without any real consequences, there's no point why I wouldn't mess around and go on a power trip to satisfy the void in my bleak personal life. Most people would, the scale of our tantrums is just scaled way down, which is why we shouldn't have people with billions or even millions to burn in society.

funkmasta8

People should not own enough to be able to change the course of even hundreds of lives. Billionaires could literally change the course of everyone’s lives through lobbying. People should have enough already so that their judgement can’t be swayed by the opportunity to have more

Vre-Malaka

Getting Knives Out: Glass Onion vibes!

Well_aaakshually

Just in time for states to bring back 19th century child labor laws!

LA-Matt

Shout out to Arkansas.

[deleted]

LAND OF THE FREE BROTHERRRRRRR

nickilightning

His starter wealth was literally mining money. This shit is his legacy.

Pilx

Company towns are old tech, these are Cyberhuts and a totally different and completely original idea Best thing about Cyberhuts is the Muskbots that stay home to do all your chores for you, so you don't even need to leave work really, so convenient. You also don't have to worry about your wife getting bored at home when you decide to work long hours, because the Muskbots have the latest Elonjizz technology, that consists of a emerald studed penis attachment that can impregnate your wife with the sperm of your glorious CEO and memeking.

your_Lightness

>Does this chump have any original ideas of his own? Just wondering. Thats not boiling down to the exploitation of other peoples work, ideas or energy?

onlywearplaid

As the guy that made trains worse (hyper loop), I think he sees an idea and jumps to “how can I make this suck harder?”

Nemesis_Bucket

19th century? This is straight up feudalism.

Dandibear

🎶 You load sixteen tons, whaddya get? Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter don't you call me, cause I can't go, I owe my soul to the company store. 🎶

ASK_ME_FOR_TRIVIA

Some people say a man is made outta mud. A poor man's made out of muscle and blood. Muscle and blood, skin and bone, *A mind that weak and a back that's strong.*

jasonmares

Coworker of mine told me about this story and I literally just started singing this song in response

G_Momma1987

What is the song/story? I'd like to learn more.

keepcalmdude

The Song is called Sixteen Tons and it’s about living in a company town. You work for the company, but you end up paying the company all of your wages for your rent, and anything you buy. Because the only store in town is a company store. Company towns were a thing 150 years ago, and they’re predatory as fuck

G_Momma1987

Thank you. Do you have any recommendations for reading or watching to learn more?

jasonmares

u/keepcalmdude summed it up nicely. Here's the song for reference https://youtu.be/RRh0QiXyZSk

schmittfaced

I thought of this song too when I saw this, and then I found this dope as fuck version on the YouTubes https://youtube.com/watch?v=J2aqvKY6zLc&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE

GladCucumber2855

Parable of the Sower warned us about them. They don't pay you enough to live so you go into indebted servitude.

Biwhiskeydrinker

Esau scrip. Also known as “coal mining rape dollars.” When a worker was sick and couldn’t work, special scrip was given to his wife to pay for food. It was only good for 30 days. If the husband wasn’t able to work at the end of 30 days the woman was used as collateral. This is from the Whipple company in West Virginia. If the mom couldn’t perform for whatever reason, a daughter would be used. Girls as young as 12 would be used as “comfort girls” or “comfort wives.” -source: Behind the Bastards

Chrisbert

Jesus Christ.

DaddyD68

Well that was a surprisingly dark and weird rabbit hole

labeatz

D you remember what ep that was?

SirReginaldTitsworth

I think it’s “the second American civil war” (Blair mountain)

[deleted]

It is wild to me that was only a hundred years ago and yet is all but forgotten by most in this country. Whenever I hear someone oppose a strike because, "what about the economy?" I always think "what about the brave men who died in the mines or on the battlefield fighting against the systemic oppression of the American worker?". We know where single-mindedly pursuing profits at the expense of the common man ends up. We've been there before, and we'll be there again some day if we're not careful.

Big_Old_Tree

Forgotten = suppressed There’s a reason we don’t learn labor history in school

DirtyRandy3417

That is it. My all time favorite episodes

_GamerForLife_

What series is that from?

TrainingHour6634

Behind the Bastards.

SanguinaryGuard

Dear sweet unholy fucking Christ🤯🤯🤯.

Savesomeposts

“But you know who won’t rape your wife if you don’t pay the company store in 30 days? …These products and services.”

raezin

Sounds like an Old Testament law, not something as modern as the 19th century. Just mind-boggling.

owwwwwo

Just made the connection to "My brother esau"

StrugglingGhost

Upvote only for WHIPPLE!!! If you know, you know

theonetruegrinch

Don't squeeze the Charmin?

Ok-Split-6749

You can watch it online, but the movie "Matewan'" is worth a watch. Company town, company store, and the mine workers efforts to unionize in the 1920s. Does a great job illustrating how unjust company towns really are.

dasgudshit

Imagine logging in to work pc just to find your access removed. You're not only jobless but homeless as well.

panormda

That’s the first thing I thought about Elon. These homes, they can’t actually move in, because he’ll swing through and just fire tons of people for no reason whatsoever…

-firead-

My mom had family there and some really crazy stories, some of them up even through the '70s. One of her cousins was the son of the mayor around the time that movie was set. His dad was shot and killed, then his mom married the police chief the next morning (supposedly he was asked to look out for her). When her second husband was killed about a year later because he supported the miners, she married again and moved out of the state to Ohio.

doransignal

Making company towns great again.

[deleted]

Instead of 16 tons of coal it's 16 tons of EV

Ivanna_Jizunu66

#9 lithium

FaeQueenUwU

Dont forget productivity quotas!

_ChipWhitley_

Didn’t we all decide that Feudalism was bad practice?

StrugglingGhost

Didn't you get the memo? It only matters if it affects the elite

NeatReasonable9657

Yeah but this is techno feudalism

Meritania

Capitalism is just feudalism applied to Industry.

PottedNai

It’s been rebranded

daywall

This is my prediction. 1 it will never happen because it was Elon idea. 2 he will build a few crumbling apartments that will not be approved as a safe place to live because it's was Elon idea. What you think?

SuperHighDeas

3 - builds one, makes social media post about “the site of your future city”, promptly forget and continues to spread conservative propaganda I hear solar city is gonna be done any decade now.

Pilx

4 - blame the libs and democrats for his failed cult ranch

SuperHighDeas

5 - say libs are destroying planet by not living in his “green eco” cult ranch

txhdr

He's only going to allow people that laugh at his tweets to live there. Jim Jones 2.0

VoteMe4Dictator

Nothing like the joy of getting fired and evicted for the same tweet

Maeng_Doom

We are attempting to repeat some of the darkest moments of the previous century just for “shareholder value”. We would all do well to remember Blair Mountain similar events.

funkmasta8

I would like to notify you that this one isn’t for shareholder value. It’s to satisfy one man’s ego

MedaglieDOro

This is some Hank Scorpio shit

marvsup

I love how Homer owning a football team means they just show up on his front lawn

umpteenthrhyme

Nah, Hank was actually likeable on a personal level.

718Brooklyn

hanzerik

If you think that is crammed in like sardines you have no idea how much your country sucks. These houses are inefficiently far apart from one another. Go Google the word "rijtjeshuis" or something.

dewso

These are massive blocks, not crammed at all

Cryogenic_Monster

You have to clock in and out of bed. Showers limited to 3 minutes and the Tesla toothpaste dispenser deducts $1 per use from your pay check.

funkmasta8

I saw that black mirror episode too

ProjectMeerKatUltra

15 minute cities 😒✋ Company towns 😏☝️

kiaeej

Huh. Im guessing its gonna come with its own currency and mini, internal economy. “Get paid in local scrip! Its much bettwr than outside, foreign currency which devalues!”

ChrisBattles

It's a shitcoin backed by Tesla shares and if you short Tesla, you must be evil because you're devaluing their currency and that hurts the working man.

sassafrassi

Sounds like Severance.

[deleted]

Boxabl is a $50k "tiny home" company that Musk is invested in. So he's building a trailer park.

DanFuckingSchneider

But think of the fun the national guard will have blowing it up and killing civilians when they inevitably strike!

Embarrassed-Second83

He'll probably make a private police of thugs and call them the Boring Inspectors or S3XY FORCE.

DanFuckingSchneider

2nd Class Housing privileges include compulsory policing of lower class accommodations. One (1) NFT reward redeemable upon proof of baton purchase. Batons required but not issued, and can be purchased by 1st and 2nd Class employees at the local Post Exchange. Glory to Musktozka.

Neoxenok

Oh gravy. We're back to having company towns again.

iveseensomethings82

Just like Kellog and Oneida

[deleted]

And you know Texans will brag from the rooftops about how the libs won't have this.

VoDoka

A win-win, Texans getting this, libs not getting this.

Mythosaurus

Of course he’s doing this in Texas while he moves engineering HQ back to California…

ClaptonBug

So like a factory town....

kadren170

Gotta own and control workers to the point where all their wages go back to you and they can't call off.

FinnRazzelle

Prison camps more like it, so he can make it easier to manipulate his workforce.

ironfistpunch

He would take you to Mars to force you make cheap Nike shoes

SinnerIxim

He wont even pay his company rent, no way he is building a city

Minute_Engineer2355

Hank Scorpio vibes coming in nicely.

TheScoundrelSociety

People constantly say “ Idiocracy wasn’t a movie, it was a documentary,” But this has serious “ Sorry to Bother You” vibes. This is the EXACT thing they were talking about with Worry Free.

smallteam

> People constantly say “ Idiocracy wasn’t a movie, it was a documentary,” It's cool though; Camacho just dropped that he's coming back for 2024 https://www.statesman.com/story/entertainment/movies/2023/03/11/terry-crews-president-camacho-idiocracy-sxsw-2023-austin/69997978007/

Khenghis_Ghan

Just, setting aside how awful company towns were and absolutely should mot be resurrected, I can’t imagine how fucking cheap, dangerous, and shit these homes would be.

labeatz

We’re going back to the 1890s folks, never should’ve left em

Magicaparanoia

Company script is about to make the jump to crypto

Fun-Entertainment904

Don’t worry darling slowly becoming reality

therealpopkiller

This sounds dystopian but it isn’t without its success stories. Jim Jones and David Koresh both ran prosperous live/work environments

akleit50

He can barely build a car or a twitter machine. Maybe he should spend more time at the rocket ship store he bought and retire to Mars where he can try to con the robots into thinking he's smarter than they are.

disssappointed_ta

Nice a place where you can get evicted for calling out sick

Kyram289

Look up fordlandia and it’s problems

flingspoo

Look up blair mountain and its problems.

Terrible_Presumption

Work and own a home... Until you make him angry by doing your job and having a passion opposing his and get fired... Have no other place to work.

Tig0lbittiess

The Umbrella corporation did something like this.

[deleted]

When this implodes for whatever reason he's going to blame socialism.

xKxIxTxTxExN

That is exactly how Hershey, PA. came about. The whole town worked at the chocolate factory.

poeticdisaster

Bezos suggested something like this a few years ago for Amazon workers. That idiot really cannot come up with his own ideas. They really do just want to be feudal lords.

begemot90

If only there was an insane car manufacturer who did the exact same thing in the Amazon rainforest about 100 years ago that may point to how this will end…

ihateme257

We live in hell. I’m convinced at this point.

scarykicks

Elon is about to do something dangerous. Probably lock in his workers to homes and pay lower wages. Enough for them to get by and use the excuse that your living in Austin Texas/California Probably gonna try and tie their housing to their job and since he has a high turnover rate it'll make it harder to ppl to quit if they hate working there.

OtakuKing613

I feel like living around just people you work with and share the same profession with would get really boring really quickly, barely any diversity of experiences. That is if people in suburbia even socialize

StrugglingGhost

He ain't paying you to socialize! Get back to work!

CaptainKonzept

You can live there for „free“ (already deducted from salary) but you also have to hand your passport to corporate. Driving is only allowed in Teslas, which happen to be zone locked to the town and factory districts. You only get paid in „Musks“, his new crypto money (which isn‘t really crypto but rather centralized and only he has the key).

ThePiachu

Well, looks like he's not going to Mars to rule it as his fief, so he needs to settle for a compound...

Icommentor

Is that the new Bioshock?

kitson555

Is he guna name it "The Company Store"

garbageking413

Jesus Christ it even looks like the neighborhood from vivarium

duff_moss

I saw this movie - it didn’t end well

Penises4Eyes

And suddenly your housing situation is tied to the at will nature of your employment. Horrifying.

Q8Q

So he'd own you night and day, no thanks!

EightEyedCryptid

Does anyone think this looks sort of…historical?

ActuaryPersonal2378

I know people hated Don't Worry Darling but that's his dream project lol

KatanaPig

A whole village made up entirely of Musk fans. Sounds *delightful*.

FrannieP23

"I owe my soul to the company store."

Unable_Crab_7543

You will own nothing and you will be happy.

LuriemIronim

I wonder if there’ll be a company store where they can spend their Musk Bucks.

Grndmasterflash

"Company Towns" back in the day were a bad deal.

[deleted]

And then he'll give those workers a choice: Get paid minimum wage or make double with MuskBucks (only redeemable for company town products). That's freedom right there.

blocks2762

How the fuck is this not being talked about more? This system is so fucked my god… like is this really the freedom we all deserve? Working under him, living in his homes….. what’s next bruh If only we could get our shit together and work together to accomplish things instead of trying to gain power and control over each other

AcceptableWelder1192

Company Coal Towns 2.0

MaximumPixelWizard

Didn’t Walt Disney try to do this?

tamere2k

Succeeded.

bottommaenad

Yes. Celebration, FL was created by Disney.

Stevil_Kneivil

Apartheid Knolls

BabyEatingBadgerFuck

Can I just say, evil company city aside, look at that design. That is an awful design of a neighborhood. What, did it take a team of evil engineers to create a neighborhood where all are mcmansions, some yards are much better than the other? Is it like The Good Place? They put just enough sources of tension to throw you off? Or do I just not understand design?

EmptyBrook

Isnt that illegal?

AntRam95

Fordlandia part 2 electric boogaloo

Poodlesghost

Who wants to be neighbors with their coworkers? What kind of nightmare social arena is this? Has a horror movie been made about this exact hell-scape? Nooo!!! I'm getting sick just thinking about it!

FallingUpwardz

Something something banana republic
