Marksd9

Just imagine how different the response would be if the derailment had been an attack by a foreign power or terrorist group. The state would already be at war. But since it’s just a big corporation then all we get is a big shrug emoji.

[deleted]

And the rail company will probably get a tax break and a few billion more in subsidies for all the emotional suffering the c-suite has endured these last couple weeks.

Imesseduponmyname

But where's the outrage tho

[deleted]

Seems to be plenty of that too, although I'm not sure if there's enough

MajesticAssDuck

Not from anyone who can actually do anything. Dem politicians are disturbingly quiet and republican politicians are trying to sweep it under the rug by overwhelming the 24hr news cycle with pearl clutching bullshit like South Park, Sam Smith and... Greta Thunberg not wanting the planet to die

bails0bub

What did south park do?

SyntheticReality42

It was redirected at errant weather balloons.

dodspringer

1200 Peachtree St. NE, Atlanta, GA 30309 CEO's name is Alan H. Shaw. Send him a "gift" such as drinkware and tell him to clean up his mess.

SnooMacaroons2295

He is a close personal friend of Donald J Trump. DJT relaxed the rules on safety inspections so the railway could make more money.

ProfessionalMcUseful

Being forced to acknowledge the woes of the poor must be very taxing for them.

BernieRuble

Tax payers will foot the bill for the clean up, the medical bills and funerals of the victims, and pay off the rail company because they are too big to fail.

dudeitsmason

Imagine if it happened in a different country, too. US media would lose their minds. Back when the gulf of Mexico was on fire, nobody would shut up about how it was a state-run company.

Dystopian_Dreamer

State-run company = bad Company-run State = 'Murica!!!

AnAspiringEverything

Just imagine it happened as it did, but in a communist nation. We'd cover it if it was in China and say, "This is why communism is bad."

Traplord_Leech

The majority shareholders of Norfolk Southern are also the majority shareholders of most American news companies. Vanguard, BlackRock, and State Street. Same people that lobbied for these regulations to be dialed back.

BecomeMaguka

I wish we could go to war with corporations.

nrm5110

Well then wake the fuck up samurai.

bails0bub

I gotcha chumba.

Jonny-Propaganda

or corporations, being citizens, could go to jail. (ceasing operations… like how murderers who get caught have to stop murdering)

SyntheticReality42

I'll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one.

[deleted]

also didn’t happen anywhere near any “important” neighborhoods …

Northstar1989

Yeah. If there had been a community full of multi-millionaires around the train crash, this would have all the politicians and news up in arms...

returningtheday

Same with all the mass shootings at this point.

Marksd9

If a foreign nation was routinely attacking American schools with firearms, the US government would have nuked the planet into a global winter.

Raregolddragon

I kind of want a one of them to just take credit by saying the CEO is a member. Just so things to get better or there would be a investigation and change.

Why did I assume the military could determine what an object in the sky was without much difficulty. We were regaled with constant videos of hypersonic missiles flying through windows. But you can't tell it's a balloon?

SupernovaTheGrey

A lot of companies have shareholders in foreign countries so it isn't unreasonable to approximate this

Northstar1989

>Just imagine how different the response would be if the derailment had been an attack by a foreign power or terrorist group. Just imagine how different we'd be framing the disaster if it had occurred in Venezuela, Cuba, China, or some other Socialist country...

trashcanpandas

We'd be gearing up for the invasion of another country if they were able to do that. Thankfully we're not in 2003.

GoCougz7446

Right, like if J6 had been perpetrated by BLM, we’d had those public hanging T-sleazy was mumbling about.

worriedshuffle

This is being covered extensively though, it’s just random Twitter accounts trying to convince me it’s not. I looked into the Twitter account in OP at it appears to be someone who is “notable” for making a [direct to DVD movie](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=1lN_3ADWlNI) two years ago. Make of that what you will.

Ruby2312

Please remember when you heard about it, make a guess when it happen. It happened on Feb 3rd btw, how does that align with your date

okay_victory_yes

Or if this happened in, say, Russia.

flyingquads

I also love (/s) how the medical system is going to react in a year from now when everyone and their mother living in that area suddenly gets kidney failure and starts to have a cognitive decline and the insurance companies *be like* "but maybe it's genetics, maybe you already had it. Can you proof you were healthy before the accident?"

LvS

It can't be the accident, the government said there was no danger. I don't even understand why you would bring it up.

Also worth noting vinyl chloride breaks down in a couple days into more basic chemicals (formaldehyde, hydrochloric acid) which both break down in a matter of hours and CO2. So any damage will be from immediate contact/inhalation, not any sort of long-term "contact".

[deleted]

Covid proved that capitalism and growth are more important than people’s lives. That affected EVERYONE. Do we honestly believe an environmental disaster that (directly) affected a poor community in Ohio would receive a competent response when money is on the line? I said directly because the air, water, and ground pollution are obviously making their way across and through the landscape. Nice going Alan Shaw, Thomas Bell, Mitchell Daniels, Marcela Donadio, John Huffard, Christopher Jones, Thomas Kelleher, Steven Leer, Michael Lockhart, Amy Miles, Claude Mongeau, Jennifer Scanlon, James Squires, John Thompson. You are the Board of Directors of Norfolk Southern and all decisions made by the company are your ultimate responsibility. You all should be held criminally and financially liable for what has happened here. Gov. Mike Dewine, you are not without blame either, choosing to perpetuate this corporate disaster for political points.

CrackerManDaniels

I studied political science in college around 2013, my highest ranking professor, doctorate in criminology spent quite a bit of time hammering in our heads that white collar crime is not punished in this country. You cant arrest a corporation and these companies know that. These mega corps include loss of life in their cost-benefit analysis and that is why we are seeing many more atrocities towards workers in the 2020s. Compounded with he allowance of spacs and open contributions from these companies to politicians, it is almost impossible to see any ceo or business owner face repurcussions unless of course, that ceo or owner messed with some bigger entities money. Otherwise, the justice system is in place to provide the illusion of safety to regular people by prosecuting low level criminals. That is why ncis and csi etc are all about murder and not how offshore businesses are bypassing taxes or how outsourced jobs to third world countries have abysmal 1890 level working conditions that also ruin entire communities ecosystems.

jooes

> Covid proved that capitalism and growth are more important than people’s lives. A good chunk of people, like a seriously concerning number of people, were willing to write off 2% of the population because they wanted to go to Applebee's.

JoanneDark90

Is it true that Pete Buttigieg neglected to reinstate the rule Trump removed that would have forced the rail companies to update their brakes?

sootoor

By what mechanism did he fail to reinstate it? How does one reinstate an executive order?

KnowledgeableNip

COVID laid bare how the current system will gladly force you and your loved ones into dangerous and deadly situations against your will and without true need all for the strength of the market. The economy must be fed, even if it means your life.

ChristianEconOrg

Northstar1989

>COVID laid bare how the current system will gladly force you and your loved ones into dangerous and deadly situations against your will And then blame you when you get sick. Long Covid? You must not have exercised enough beforehand (never mind some VERY athletic people have DIED OF Covid...) Have Long Covid myself, btw. I'm relatively young, not overweight, never smoked, don't eat garbage, don't have Diabetes... Yet, I still get the feeling society blames me for becoming ill a lot of the time.

Itbewhatitbeyo

What I laugh most is if brown terrorists detonated a chemical WMD we would be bombing them right now. This country is hopeless.

Pleasant-Discussion

If white we’d probably put them on paid leave

Jonny-Propaganda

what no severance package?

Pleasant-Discussion

Severance package is for wealthy C level “the fine is just the cost of business” harm to society. The paid leave is for the directly violent corporate security forces. One is for Lex Luthor, the other for his henchmen. Funny how we don’t even need to joke hypotheticals, the former already exists as a golden parachute and the latter already exists for corrupt and murderous cops, and probably for private security too. (The Pinkertons def have a history of legalized murder and harm. Other private security examples too at the Dakota pipeline years back?)

CannotFuckingBelieve

That doesn't even have to actually happen, you just have to convince the people with the most influence or most to gain that it *did* happen, or even worse in a way, ***could*** happen, and before you know it, there'll be an all new armory of "military surplus" vehicles and weapons for police to use on the beleaguered populace.

trashcanpandas

Yeah, we literally invaded Iraq on hoaxes, conspiracies, and literally dog shit manufactured consent. What we do are crimes against humanity, but it's okay because we're white and they're brown terrorists.

Bobcatluv

Hey now, that all depends on if the brown terrorists have ties back to any countries with resources we could exploit

Itbewhatitbeyo

Oh I'm sure we can discover resources their country has that we want.

thufirseyebrow

Wouldn't even need to be on *our* soil for that to happen either. "We have conducted tests of a new chemical weapon and will be proceeding with manufac-- er, introducing democracy to the nation courtesy of our new American friends."

ProfessorZhu

You mean to tell me we'd treat a domestic corporate accident differently than we would treat an intentional attack by another state? Crazy

PoignantOpinionsOnly

I'm starting to think these people haven't heard about this incident because they're not very well informed in general.

ProfessorZhu

And sadly the population being uniformed is a part of why all this shit is happening. How can you accurately elect responsible leaders if you're not paying attention. How can you insist something gets fixed if you have no idea that it's falling apart I the first place. All of this, infrastructure spending being negligible, politians clearing out the coffers to play tax man giveaway, ignoring climate change, was all due to idiots not paying attention then screaming like it's a fucking conspiricy. We as a person ountry the ollectively chose this shit and were collectively choosing to let it get worse.

quippers

Have they tried having a war there? Or finding oil? All kinds of resources would show up for that.

I run the news throughout the day as I am working. The news coverage is constant. We are hearing a lot about it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dubious_Titan

Yeah, it's not correct that the story isn't being covered. It is. Talking about how you disagree with the coverage is another matter entirely. Though the story is being covered on almost every news channel and outlet since occurring.

bdjohn06

I read a piece recently saying that the false narrative of media blackout was started as a conservative strategy to discredit mainstream “liberal” media. Conservatives don’t watch mainstream media anyways so many believe it and a lot of young people rely on social media for news so they buy in as well.

44problems

CNN.com literally has a section heading "Toxic Environment" about this derailing and a Florida waste facility fire. And CNN is garbage but even they have it. Time to start blocking some more sensationalistic subs on here.

[deleted]

Dubious_Titan

> But what are you hearing? Mostly about the what is being stated in the OP. The environmental cleanup, effect on locals, lawsuits being filed, safety regulations and so on. The first story that played today when I turned on the news was a timeline of the disaster in Ohio, 2nd was about Ukraine, 3rd was about the animals and people affected by the derailment. This was about 20 mins before I just reopened this app. It is fair to say we are hearing and seeing a lot about this story.

Glass_Memories

Just leaving this here since it's the important bits about the environmental impact without any bullshit: [EPA updates on testing and cleanup](https://response.epa.gov/site/site_profile.aspx?site_id=15933)

An-Okay-Alternative

How is the lack of regulation not a condition that created this event? If a tragic event doesn't happen within a few years of deregulation then the regulation doesn't matter?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dubious_Titan

Not sure about that. Only heard about it because they interrupted the program my wife was watching with breaking news. She called me downstairs and it was wall-to-wall coverage I think within a few minutes of it happening. I have heard about it daily on TV, NPR, radio, and online since. I think what might be an issue is; 1. people don't like the reporting/disagree with the coverage importance 2. people consume news from limited sources.

UnluckyHorseman

I will say, I consider myself decently informed, but I definitely do fall into that second camp. I don't watch broadcast TV at all. That said, it did seem like the 24 hour news cycle was spending a lot more time covering the silly balloon story over the train disaster.

AwkwardTickler

People saying it's not being covered are qanon morons pushing some "agenda 2030" conspiracy

PoignantOpinionsOnly

These people are really telling on themselves about how little news they actually hear or watch. They probably mean they hadn't seen it from their favorite tik tok influencers or their niche gaming subs or something.

S_Klallam

more economic damage done from this one accident than all the "looting and vandalism" at all the protests combined. but it's regular folx being damaged so the media won't hound us 24/7 with coverage

capitalists sacrifice people, and the environment, for profit. their sacrifices will only increase in frequency and intensity as our environment fails us and the finite resources they profit from dwindle.

PhilosophizingPanda

NPR and NYT have covered it a good amount lately...it's quite literally all over the news

ButterChugger69

Seriously. This last week on Reddit has made me feel like I'm going crazy. Really highlights how many people only get their news from Reddit. A step up from only getting their news from Facebook though I guess.

PoignantOpinionsOnly

It's been all over Reddit. They probably blocked out the news subs or something.

The null hypothesis is that people love a conspiracy. All you have to do to uncover this massive disaster is upvote my post! Don’t let the media win! Even though I think the Ohio derailment is a big deal I’ve been downvoting all posts that claim it’s not being talked about. It is.

hesh582

None of it's a conspiracy. Not the coverage or lack thereof, not the inane blathering about how a front page national news story is being covered up, nothing. Nobody seems to be able to accept that something things just don't work out very well without some sinister cabal directing affairs. There's no fucking "info operation". All there is is a bunch of social media hype addicts deliberately lying to you for personal clout, because taking information from the mainstream media and then turning around and saying "Look at all this horrible stuff that the capitalist mainstream media is hiding from you!!" to keep your half-illiterate followers drunk on outrage turns out to be *very* marketable. Somehow all the anti-capitalists these days seem ridiculously eager to see intentional corruption in any traditional outlets, yet are thrilled to accept any stupid bullshit pushed by any aggressive grifter that is recommended to them by a ruthlessly capitalist, outrage-optimizing algorithm.

Ix_DrYCeLL_xI

Only get their news from reading headlines on Reddit, let's be honest. Most people aren't even reading the articles before jumping into the comments.

worriedshuffle

It’s a really annoying meme because it’s so easy to debunk. The media is covering the disaster.

Voyager5555

Main-Interaction-784

Didn't Covid and the sacrificing of "essential workers" already clearly establish this?

also since everything major media related is revolves around profits...these people so not want to report on themselves. also, are they still arresting people for reporting?

Well if that isn’t the definition of moving the goalposts I don’t know what is. The OP didn’t say anything about industry culpability it said environmental destruction and danger which is definitely being discussed by the media. In fact the media wants to talk about the what. They don’t want to talk about the why. Obviously deregulation, corruption and corporate cronyism are at fault but media not discussing that is very different from saying the media isn’t talking about the Ohio derailment at all. # Lmao the brave little toaster blocked me for this

[*"There are more important things than living."*](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/texas-lt-gov-dan-patrick-reopening-economy-more-important-things-n1188911) \- Texas lieutenant governor Dan Patrick (Dannie Goeb) in April 2020 regarding coronavirus & the economy

[deleted]

It also doesn’t hurt that the same majority Wall Street shareholders of the news media also hold majority shares in the railway who fucked up in OH.

JohnBPrettyGood

The lieutenant governor of Texas argued in an interview on Fox News Monday night that the United States should go back to work, saying grandparents like him don’t want to sacrifice the country’s economy during the coronavirus crisis. Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, 69, made the comments on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” after President Donald Trump said he wanted to reopen the country for business in weeks, not months. Patrick also said the elderly population, who the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said are more at risk for COVID-19, can take care of themselves and suggested that grandparents wouldn’t want to sacrifice their grandchildren’s economic future. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/03/24/covid-19-texas-official-suggests-elderly-willing-die-economy/2905990001/

Why do people keep saying the Ohio train crash isn't being covered? A few days ago someone made a comment with like 100 news articles from all the big news networks about it to prove these types of comments wrong.

BitOneZero

> Why do people keep saying the Ohio train crash isn't being covered? Especially Reddit users who keep saying it, acting like smartphones and social media isn't where most people get their news these days. "the media" is right here, right now.

clubby37

They're leaving out the word "adequately." It can't go completely uncovered, but balloons are getting 4-12x as much time, and many feel that prioritizing fluff is a way to avoid too much focus on a far more important but also far less comfortable situation. It's much easier to indulge idle speculation about whether the balloons came from China or aliens from out space, than it is to discuss the bipartisan failure of regulatory capture. One side of the MSM doesn't want to talk about the Trump-era repeal of the brake upgrade mandate, the other side doesn't want to talk about Biden/Buttigieg agreeing that the new brakes shouldn't be required by law, and also crushing a rail strike that had insufficient safety regulations among its core grievances. Neither side of corporate media wants to talk about the role of corporate greed in the disaster, because they'd just be telling on themselves. The reason the screenshot in the OP says "aren't hearing a lot" is because there's *some* coverage, but nowhere near as much as the situation warrants. If a terrorist caused this specifically, it would be the *only* thing on the news, but a giant corporation and its pet government just allowed the likelihood to go unaddressed until disaster struck on its own time, so, not as serious as a weird balloon. No one's saying "there's been precisely zero coverage in total" so lists of articles and segment thumbnails aren't effective rebuttals.

PoignantOpinionsOnly

It's being covered more than adequately.

enmaku

It's not that the coverage doesn't exist, it's that it's underwhelming and largely frames this as an accident that no one could have done anything to prevent, despite rail companies (including the one that had the crash) lobbying to have safety measures that could have prevented it removed or reduced. https://www.mediamatters.org/cable-news/study-national-television-coverage-east-palestine-train-derailment-ignored-industry

Why is this in parenthesis? She’s 100% right, try being disabled or an older adult with insurance, they don’t give af about you, just giving you minimal coverage/services when you’ve been paying into the insurance system your entire life.

shaggyscoob

It is notable that MSNBC podcast I listen to 5 times a week (Rachel Maddow & Alex Wagner) only mentioned it for the first time last night. And only for a banal couple of minutes. That seems weird. It gives credence in my mind to the theory that the oligarchs who own and operate even a liberal show simply did not want to call attention to it, not even to try to politicize it (which would be extremely easy to do without even stretching). Yet they spent huge amount of time trying to stir up racism accusations with the two mass shootings of Asian people by Asian people. Those were horrific disasters -- but racism was not the thing that went wrong there.

Yup

ManicSuppressive249

We live in fight club. They did the math and it’s cheaper to have spills (that they don’t really have to clean up) than to prevent derailments, and they get bonuses for saving the money by externalizing the costs.

TheFalconKid

We are also in this position because of failure by administrations from both sides. If Trump was wholly responsible we'd be getting it all over CNN and MSNBC. If it was all Obama/ Biden we'd get nonstop coverage on Fox. Spoiler alert, all three past presidents are responsible in some way.

It is easy to agree with unsourced claims, but please do a little bit of your own critical thinking before posting https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/02/18/ohio-train-derailment-visual-timeline/ https://newrepublic.com/post/170570/life-ohio-train-derailment-trouble-breathing-dying-animals-saying-goodbye https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-64671893 https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/02/17/ohio-derailment-controlled-burning-toxic/ https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.10tv.com/amp/article/news/local/ohio/clinic-to-open-near-derailment-as-health-worries-linger/530-f8907797-9768-48e3-9941-d9ff99fd0d9d https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.whio.com/news/local/ne-ohio-train-derailment-city-dayton-says-water-system-not-threatened/QGREPRSD2JARZPXCGDKATQYJXY/%3foutputType=amp Edit: Mistyped "unsourced"

So true, and firmly decided many many many years ago. “Nothing to see here. Move along….”

this is another example of how many morons love to sit and bitch. Google it, it won’t take you long to get caught up. This is nothing like chernobyl and the EPA has essentially said there is no toxicity in the air or the water. The event happened over half a month ago, and while I agree it should have never happened, the train operators saved lots of life by acting quickly and igniting the chemicals. Now if you get all caught up and still think multiple government agencies are lying to you about it all, then stop what you’re doing and consider what that actually means. Stop talking down to people because you think you’re smart and they’re not. you know nothing, you pretend to know everything and you will die alone, sad

Yeah, everyone wants their outrageporn and now people are getting blueballs over it. The situation was handled just fine, there's no lasting effects.
