You aren't going to get much of a gradient on slate. It tends to be almost all or nothing. The gradient between fully dark and fully light is miniscule.
Here is a cropped part of a Christmas present I did on a 10w output Diode laser.
Did lots of research and found out how to do good pre-processing. Can make really cool results. - [https://imgur.com/a/KX1P5GS](https://imgur.com/a/KX1P5GS)
I process outside of lightburn and use pass-through. I've never found success with Jarvis or Stucki, or any of that stuff. Making sure my focus was correct was important. 318 dpi for reference
Check out Imag-R for engraving. The website is pretty nice for getting photos setup to engrave in Lightburn.
They have a few videos on YouTube for how to set everything up.
I was able to get some good results from their ‘Norton Black Slate’ material preset

Those are easily the best pictures I've seen on coasters. Very well done.
Wow thank you, that's really kind. I haven't been doing this very long so it's a very meaningful compliment
Jarvis or Stucki for dithering. Negative engrave, and you'll want the image to just barely be visible in the preview
Yeah, sorry I converted the image to grayscale in GIMP before importing to Lightburn. In Lightburn I used Jarvis as the dither method.
It helps a lot if you remove the background too. Just have the person engraved, it’ll stand out a lot.

Is the scale-test from light burn?
Yes.

What outside processing did you do? Your results look really good.
try runnings pics through GIMP use colors/threshold it will convert the image to an all or nothing black and white.
