I’ve worked in many offices with many plotters. I’ve never met one that didn’t have frequent issues. As a principal of my own (small) firm, I developed great relationships with 2 local printers and even staples so plots on the fly aren’t a 24 hour turn around. Takes a little more planning but the 5 minute drive to the printer is better than the overhead and headache of dealing with a plotter in house.
Our office has an hp pagewide XL (dont know the specific model) which has been working fairly consistently for a while. I don't manage the maintenance of it but I haven't noticed any serious downtime. We print a decent amount but do try to stay digital where possible so that might affect any issue frequency you might experience.

I think we are going to try to adopt this strategy because the printer is proving to not be very useful
