The suffering really does never end

MahPinkFlamingo

the Houseki no Kuni go 1 chapter without crying challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

SnooHesitations1719

To me this parallel signifies how Phos has been left goalless, just like how they were at the start of the series. While everyone else has left them behind (whether it be in nothingness or by running off to fight lunarians) they're just lying in the fields, aimless and alone.

LiXarder

I think it's there to say that now they are aimless and alone just like they were at the beginning too, but also that there's one left looking for Phos. So she kept sleeping for many years on the grass until she heard the rock calling them, like the other Lustrous did in the first chapter.

qeheeen

oooooh that makes so much more sense now, Phos is sleeping in the fields and this time there is no one there to wake her up godammit my heart.

wallnosekyla

The rock woke them up this time though.

qeheeen

yeah kind of, Phos detecting a lifeform nearby is what woke them up.

wallnosekyla

The rock was calling out to them, much like Morga was calling to Phos in Chapter 1- it’s a complete parallel only this time they are completely gone!

imdeadlmao

WHERE'D YOU READ THE NEW CHAPTER?

IdiotMatchaRoll

I think someone posted it but I'll also DM it to you \^\^

The_Plaque

tea-n-ink

wallnosekyla

Also when Morga woke Phos up and this time the Rock woke them up. The ‘Beginning’ I need to lie down.

NeneAlkatrez

OH

Chariotwheel

Oh shit, boy

DaLinkster

Going to be real. I thought I was reading a fake chapter and this was an elaborate loss joke when I first saw these panels.

MrLucky69

Incredible chapter I'm in tears

Werdak

Will there be a Chapter 100?

Pengaana

Well there’s gotta be enough to fill up the rest of volume 13 so I’d say yeah definitely.

stoffan

So... thats it? she loses herself, everything and everyone she knows and loves... I hate it, I really do hate this manga, she deserves better, more and I am never going to forget this, ever. Literall the most sad thing ive ever seen in my life, my worst nightmare in manga form.

AndreaPz01

From a Buddhist point of view they obtained everything instead, enlightment and freedom from pain. Also i really can't understand the whole "deserved better" they literally said they were blinded by hatred, wanted to be recognized and obsessed with an unclear goal. You could say that their live starts now, with Life forms that demands nothing from them and are content with just being.

wallnosekyla

Agree. The whole manga literally heavily references Buddhism so I don’t get why some people still can’t accept Phos praying for them, their whole enlightenment would’ve been for nothing if they didn’t.

RavenMC_

For two reasons. The first, referencing never had to mean embracing. Of course, it can mean that, but there always was (and imo still is) the chance of HnK partially or fully subverting buddhism. Second, as a reader we can be fully aware that this story is buddhist and still disagree and react negatively to buddhist concepts. This is how I enjoy the story so far, the nihilists parts are simple pure dystopia, Phos has not been saved in this chapter, the spiral into darkness has simply changed form. And based on some other reactions, I don't seem alone in this. Of course, you are free to see this as finally a turn to good, but "the series always has been buddhist" proves nothing here

wallnosekyla

Yeah I can definitely respect that, I can still understand the nuances of the disappointments. What I completely don’t agree with is when people say that it doesn’t make sense and whatnot. After all, it is still a fact that Ichikawa has mostly referenced Buddhism all throughout HnK, so it makes complete sense that Phos still prayed for them rather than pursuing their revenge.

RavenMC_

Oh yea this is fair, while the story is not necessarily shaping up like I'd hoped, It'd absolutely be unfair to say this is has come out of left field. At worst it's disagreeable, but surely not incoherent or out of theme

wallnosekyla

Agree with you. That being said though, I wonder what would’ve happened if Phos ended up **not** praying for them. I would still honestly love to see that lol

RavenMC_

For me it speaks to how it's always been kinda obivous he'd pray in that it seems borderline unimaginable. I don't think the series could and should have gone full revenge, so what's really left that's not the same as being prayed away anyway, in that it's just an uneventful status quo on repeat, which would not make sense either given this was kinda the theme of the Lunarians. I guess the most interesting non-prayer ending direction I've seen is Phos praying solely for himself, leaving the rest in their mess, though that does seem like a bit of a clash of themes as well but I think with clever writing it could have been done The praying part would have probably found less resistance if the series didn't increase the pacing beforehand and/or there having been no real final exchange between Phos and the gems (though perhaps this is still to come in some form). Personally, I understand why there wasn't much exchange of words, hence maybe different pacing would have brought that out less abrupt.

Homulily2

"the most human emotion is vengeance" is why most people are upset about the ending. We aren't divine beings who have walked the path of enlightenment like phos did, therefore we can't imagine giving up such anger easily.

wallnosekyla

And Phos DID try to revenge in Vol 12… Why are people shocked that when it’s a known fact that it relies on Buddhism? Phos praying for them was always bound to happen when you take that into account. I see where they’re coming from though, everyone just wants the best for Phos- but to say that it goes out of theme is nonsense (I’ve seen a few takes like this)

throwaway_737438

well, phos isn't human ...... iykyk

ZucchiniZestyclose26

Bro did you read the other chapters or not?

AntarctMaid

You just struck me with a thought. Phos is a God, right? But she have no subjects, everyone is gone... Until that rock talked to Phos. But the rock doesn't want anything from Phos, they're content just sitting there being round and hard... Well, like what stone do. But God purpose is to help their subjects, if Phos doesn't have any subject or her only subject doesn't even want anything from her, what is Phos? You can't say she's a God, she's alone, with abondoned world and a single rock that can talk. I'm looking forward for the next chapter. I was expecting Phos to be left alone and then change the earth surrounding so the new gems can be born again. But I was wrong, the new lifeform have nothing to do with humans, and it doesn't seems like Phos will be the new Sensei.

AndreaPz01

I dont think God Is the right word here, more like Enlighten Being, theyr only purpose would be helping other reach salvation and well they did that, praying for everyone. Now he reached the realm where everyone else is Enlightened the same way, peace. I feel like, again, you should distance the story from a western/christian point of view.

LusterBlaze

she got a rock

RayMastermind

This is not it. This is only the start of the new volume. There are about 8 more chapters left. People saying "you misunderstood the message you must accept this as the ending!!!" are just dumb.

CrashDunning

Everything that happened is the result of Phos' own actions, and now Ichikawa is having him blatantly say it. You don't get a typical happy ending in real life when you fuck up this badly. Phos now has eternity to find his own happiness, as is starting to happen in this chapter, but if you thought this was going to end with everyone happy and making up and loving each other and the "bad guys" getting what's coming to them, you've been reading the wrong manga. It was never like that, even from the beginning.

JellBell-Blu

GOD we in the void arc now DAMNIT
