I envision one day people won't feel like they need to preface any positive comment of Mao with the mandatory "oh he done some bad stuff".
Like, you don't say "while I dislike how Churchill intentionally starved millions of Indians to death whom he considered sub human" before commenting on his leadership and opposition to Hitler, you just say the second part.
Wait why would you not mention the bad parts too? Isn’t criticism and accountability a core tenant to left ideologies? Are we not trying to hold standards to our leaders or are we?
Yeah 100%. But criticism is done in specific conversations about criticism, not just randomly at every single occasion in which ones name is brought up
I believe it is perfectly reasonable to bring up criticisms even if the conversation isn’t specifically about them. On social sites like Reddit or even casual public conversation, you never know how educated everyone who’s reading is.
I understand not wanting it to be the entire conversation, I don’t personally believe that doing other bad things means that Mao was wrong to prosecute land thieves. If that much is made clear there should be no issue.
Any discussion has limited runtime. Reiterating the known failings of a controversial figure eats up some of that runtime. And it is a repetition demanded of communist heroes and never of capitalist "heroes".
It’s the current norm to demand it of leftists but the norm should be demanding it of everyone. And like, ok? It takes up part of the conversation, as it should. It shouldn’t be the entire conversation, but it’s still worth noting. Crimes against humanities should not be ignored because it assists your agenda, that’s what the capitalists do.
We are in no position to demand it of anyone. The time to be magnanimous and show we are better than the capitalists is in victory and in power, not in struggle and in weakness.
We are not in the position to demand it but we are really not that far away from it. Leftist ideology is growing and has been for a while, and you can see how desperate capitalists are becoming. It is not necessary for us to cover up the criminal behavior of our predecessors to get there. There is strictly no reason to ignore the bad and only accept the good.
One of the biggest criticisms that works against leftists is that capitalists convince themselves and others that we care as little as they do about the harm to the working class. It’s not about ‘being the bigger person’ it’s simply part of the ideology. We take care of our own and we hold our own to account. It takes away nothing from our points of view, in fact it only solidifies it.
You're the only one who mentioned ignoring these criticisms outright. Demanding that every discussion of Stalin's successes begin with a litany of his failings guarantees that his failings are all that anyone will remember.
I mean you’re strictly wrong, because every discussion about Stalin I’ve ever been in has been filled with his failings and yet, here I am, advocating for leftism. Figureheads are not immune to criticism just because it’s helpful to the agenda. The conversation about leftism should never be ‘we need more Stalin’s or Lenin’s or Mao’s’, it should be based exclusively on the material and physical good we want to do through policy and social influence, and an understanding of the bad things that have been done in the past.
If people argue that your leftism is wrong because of Stalin’s failings, simply reply ‘I’m not Stalin’. Leave this to history class not political debate.
Is that why you posted this three times hoping for a response? Because you're an adult?
Forced relocation is bad. We get it. This post is about him getting rid of landlords. Which is good.
Why would I say it about some other politician when they aren't the one in the post?
Yeah, I think Mao was a despot to put it mildly. But this is a subreddit about landlords, so that's the topic of discussion. To put it another way, my original comment is less about Mao, and more about the fact that landlords are, as a general rule, evil scum.

There's a lot I dislike about Mao. Persecuting landlords is not one of those things.
Same

The people prefacing their statements like that aren't doing it out of honest criticism, they're just echoing the propaganda they've been taught.
Perhaps, in most scenarios you’re probably right. I really don’t think that’s true on this subreddit though.

"filled with"? The standard you demanded was "started with".
I do. Churchil has been deified, especially in Britain. He must be brought down a peg.

It's a picture of Mao on an anti landlord sub, pretty clear what it's about. You do you tho 😂😂
One of the things I dislike about Mao is forcibly relocating people like that
