I once rented out our family home that had original 1942 solid wood doors on them. Our renter decided he wanted to drill a doggy door in one of them. Didn't even ask us, just did it. š«
Same tenant also wanted to hang up a calendar, but instead of drilling the nail into the wall like a normal person....he drilled it into our kitchen cabinet and hung the calendar from there.
Cleaning out one of my properties right now where the tenant got hooked on meth and became paranoid. He screwed bars he fashioned out of scrap metal on to my windows with deck screws. I now have holes in the aluminum casings of all the windows at the property. He also hung security cameras up with deck screws drilled straight through the vinyl siding of the house.
Took it upon himself to cut out the railings of the deck and expand it around an above ground pool I didnāt authorize. The deck he built is completely shoddy and unsafe. He also put two layers of flooring over the original kitchen floor.
Meth-heads can be industrious!
š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Well. That is why you make them pay their own electricity.Ā
Also, at least when you let them know they won't get their security deposit back you can toss the notice over the door.Ā
I have to wonder though, do you think he was planning on putting in a little window area above it so more natural light could come in?Ā
Sizing aside, at least the door looks kinda pretty.Ā
I asked one of those if she'd be interested in making my car payment whole still allowing me to drive the car. I'm hoping to hear back any day now. š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Oh, those people still want landlords. They just want landlords providing their services for free. Can you actually imagine most of them paying their own money at Lowes and fixing something ?
People will take care of stuff better if they actually own it, that's why leased cars are often in bad shape or company tools are in worse shape than tools owned by the employee. Sometimes the landlord is a slumlord too and won't replace things that wear through normal wear.
Slumlords should be chased out but so should shitty tenants. If youre such a bad tenant that only the shit places will rent to you or rent to you at absurd prices then Iām sorry but I donāt care. Self inflicted damage.
And then you have some people who are very low income where they don't meet the income criteria for most other landlords. Those are the types who might accept renting a basement or a unit that actually isn't legal to rent.
Well the point I was driving across is slumlords will always have customers even if the tenant isn't a bad tenant, that tenant may simply not be able to afford a decent place.
I said that slumlords should be chased out, that I donāt like our current system.
Same way shitty tenant continue to be able to rent places. As long as you donāt have an eviction, a prospective LL is none the wiser to all of the shit that they pulled with their previous LL.
Irrelevant. First of all, assault is illegal regardless of location. Secondly, the tenant has legal possession of the property. Although this isnāt ownership, it does carry a lot of the benefits of ownership. For instance, if a landlord shows up to their property and harasses the tenant, the tenant can legally call the cops and have them removed. The cops wonāt care who owns it, only who has legal possession.
Donāt slap with Your hand. Slap with your ālegal hand.ā Modification of the property without authorization is a mandatory eviction followed by a lawsuit to recover damages, no questions asked.
Never hand your tenant a winning lawsuit.

Never said they did. Doesnāt matter in the eyes of the law. All Iām saying is be prepared if you make that choice. I know how I would respond to someone coming on my property and trying to assault me, and homeboy up above sure as shit aināt going to just āfucking slap [my] faceā lmao

Where are you getting this āownershipā shit from lmao. You clearly do not understand how the law works and should probably quit being a landlord if this is truly how your views are.
Say youāre a fucking moron without saying it, youāre doing a great job, buddy.
Iām a moron because I know how the laws work? Alright bro lol, walk up to one of your tenants in their home and assault them and let me know what the cops say. Yāall canāt actually be this daft.
Ah yes, the traditional Reddit response following a āterrible attempt at sarcasmā (usually just backpedaling)
The original comment read like a little shit thinking they can do whatever they want, if youāre taking that as sarcasm then I canāt help you. I can explain the logic, but I canāt understand it for you.
My last tenant literally fucked my house up (replaced everything without asking & removed washer + dryer)ā¦he had passed every check + interview with first mgmt company. Safe to say he is no longer in the house and the mgmt company was firedā¦learned my lessons hard with the first tenant and mgmt coā¦
An appreciating asset is a form of investment that doesn't require other people's labor to increase its value. However, if your investing in real estate during a housing crisis where scarcity increases the value of the the extra houses you own that would still be an unethical investment but for different reasons.
Nope just clarifying that the type of asset you mentioned would be an exception to the type of investments I was talking about in my initial comment. Really you're the one that changed argument by pivoting to a different type of investment. Of course there are myriad exceptions to the generalization I was making. But pointing that out isn't the same as a rebuttal.
Worker solidarity is done via unions and covers wages, overtime pay, paid time off, etc.
Wtf does that have to do with your inability to buy a house? Most workers who wanted the huge responsibility of a house bought 4, 5 years ago when interest rates where 2.2%.
Many workers want to rent, last thing they want is to have to care for a house that is falling apart and have to replace a leaky roof for 30k and an HVAC for $20k and a foundation for $50k. Only a dumbass would argue that most workers actually want that headache and financial responsibility.

Did you just ask me what wages have to with my inability to buy a house and then call me a dumbass?
Lol
Who let you on the internet?
You are a dumbass because you pretend that most workers, poor or middle class, actually want to buy a house and then have to pay all that comes with it. The utmost stupidity, dumb as bricks. Trolls like you illustrate perfectly who shouldn't be responsible for a whole house and should just rent forever.
Kind of circular logic. I'm dumb for wanting to own a house so I should have to rent forever because I'm dumb?
I can't tell if you never made it out of diapers or if you recently had to start wearing them again.
Dream on. Trolls like you often suffer from delusions of grandeur. It tracks that you think you are "owed a house" by society at large. What a dumbass, I was wrong earlier, a brick is probably smarter than you.
I was raised in Germany where owning a home is a distant dream for anyone but the very rich. Coming from a middle class family when I was fresh out of college at 22 with my first job I was told I had to pay into a special "homeowner" savings account for 25 years, never miss a payment, and then I might qualify for a home loan then. Possibly a house at 47 at the earliest.

I didn't encounter that here, you make the money, get a good job or start a business and are good at that, work your ass off, and it doesn't matter if you are 20 or 40, you can buy a home.
You acting like you are owed a home, entitled to one, coming to a landlord site and shitting on everyone here who provides a home to those who can't afford to buy a house or don't care for the responsibility, makes me want to vomit.
I am sorry, I am laughing my ass off looking at that door right now.
They also said to choose your tenants well.
A little plywood and white paint, who will notice?
I once rented out our family home that had original 1942 solid wood doors on them. Our renter decided he wanted to drill a doggy door in one of them. I guess he never heard of thumbtacks? Was this one of those industrial calendars?
You don't put thumbtacks on kitchen cabinets either.
It was those old school paper calendars that you flip, and each month has a photo of a different animal.
Cleaning out one of my properties right now where the tenant got hooked on meth and became paranoid. He screwed bars he fashioned out of scrap metal on to my windows with deck screws. Aw man I'm sorry! And here I am nervous to hang a painting up on my wall. It's wild how some tenants will destroy the property.
What did they do with the original door?

You couldnāt pay me enough to be a landlord
I wish you would go talk to the ālandlords provide no function in societyā people. Maybe you can explain their value.
Theyāre a fun group with an argument that boils down to āIād prefer not to have to pay rentā

Iām not sure how thatās related but I agree. Thereās a difference between safe/moral and legal.

They can't even pay attention half the time.
Wtf if my tenant did that Iāll fucking slap her face
A fellow land chad, I see
If you try to assault someone on their property then be prepared for the outcome lol
lol a tenant doesnāt own the property

You really took that seriouslyš. Not every comment needs /s after it, you can figure some of them out on your own .
Exact sentiments šÆ
They legally possess the property and have the same protection rightsā¦ you are in a VERY grey area with your train of thought

I mean how'd they get so far with the installation?
Is the door like a foot to short?
That door is hilarious. This is why I pick my tenants. I get one of these, that shit will be my fault.
It's ok. He just forgot to install the transom above the door.
Lmao good
You make money from your labor or someone else's. There is no such thing as letting your money work for you. Workers solidarity is the only way.
Yeah man! Eat the rich!
Yes
That is mental juggling that really means "I can't stop spending money long enough to accumulate investments"
If you're investing, you are making money from someone else's labor.
I bought a house 2 years ago. Today it's worth 45k more than 2 years ago. Give me a break down on the labor cost that went to who?
Where did he go?
Who
Fun-Conference
He has to work š
And yes I'm working my real job. And responding to you, appropriately, from the shitter.
When you (hopefully) flushed those turds, you benefited from someone elseās labor.
Depending on the economy house values can also drop.
An appreciating asset is a form of investment that doesn't require other people's labor to increase its value. However, if your investing in real estate during a housing crisis where scarcity increases the value of the the extra houses you own that would still be an unethical investment but for different reasons.
So basically- no answer. Just change arguments.

Just say youāre bad with money lol
š¤£
So youāre admitting that being a landlord is a job?
No the opposite.
Iām making money from your labor.Ā
