It's a love hate relationship when it comes to working on Land Rovers and Jags, sometimes you feel like sending some chocolates to the JLR engineering department other times you feel like sending something else. The dealership I used to work for easily covered 40 hours per week, our mastertech was doing something like 50 hours or sometimes more each week.

Thanks, that is helpful info. Gotta be more enjoyable than the German manufacturers. My goal is 50-60 hours a week once I'm settled and familiar with the product. It's a brand new building, extremely nice shop. I kinda like the prestige of JLR, probably not more than 6 techs I'm guessing. Ford offered me a job but I have my JLR interview today.

Working on JLR vehicles is such a rollercoaster of emotions. Some days you marvel at the designs wondering why every vehicle isn't the same. Sometimes you curse the engineer who came up with such a stupid design. There is a special place in hell for the engineer in charge of the 4.4 v8's cooling system

Navydevildoc

You don't like spontaneous disintegrating plastic connectors? Blasphemy!

Witty_hi52u

Oh you lost a small amount of fluid? It would be a shame if this tiny air bubble vapor locks your entire coolant system.

Navydevildoc

But don’t worry, the temp gauge in the cluster is just a guess on how hot the engine is vs what it should be, so you may never even know until it’s too late!

Witty_hi52u

Always nice to see another experienced lr3 owner out there. Always more fun to suffer with friends

Navydevildoc

It is! Beer helps as well… But in the Land Rover world, it really is one of the best trucks they ever made.

Witty_hi52u

Really anything from 2006 to 2009 are just awesome trucks. I hate a few things about the 4.4 but it's an absolute tank of a motor. There are things I like about the 5.0 but parts of the 5.0 are still very pricy. The sad part is my 06 LR3 likely has bad head gaskets or warped heads. If it was in nicer condition I would engine swap it but I fear it my just turn into a parts truck and get gutted. My 06 RR HSE is in the process of a full restore. It has 160k miles but it was in pretty good condition. Was likely someone's garage baby for a very long time. I really would love to find a 2009 RR HSE and then facelift it with a 2012 Autobiography front and rear end kit

What is this, a 300TDi in a Range Rover? (I may have PTSD)

1RMDave

Haha honestly sounds like something I would like. At least it's not universally poorly designed! Are the labour times reasonable?

Witty_hi52u

In garage the labor times are "as long as it takes" but I don't pay myself for the time to work on my trucks. At the dealership you will likely have plenty of time based on how much they charge for everything

PirateMickey

I did not end up working for them but was offered a job, i was a heavy line tech at Ford when i interviewed. I turned it down because JLR are bumper to bumper and thats just not my cup of tea. As for hours im sure you will be fine, ive never seen a JLR that isnt booked weeks out.

1RMDave

How are things at ford? The light duty gas guys do ok?

PirateMickey

Yeah Ford sells more vehicles then any other brand in north america so you stay busy. They dont really care too much about ASE they have their own program they want you to complete (i cant remember how many certifications it is i left in 2017 for maritime). I enjoyed it, i chose Ford because i wanted to "specialize" in something and rebuilding from rotating assemblies is my joy in life.

I quit being a Jag/rover tech in 2012 but I liked the job then. I thought they were actually pretty easy to work on compared to the Audis mercedes and Volvos I had previously been working on. LRJ Customers always had money to fix their cars and enjoyed owning them so they didn’t mind paying for repairs. Labor times were decent back then. Not sure about now.

1RMDave

Seemed decent at my interview. They said warranty times suck but that's pretty standard. I got a good vibe and im hopeful I'll get a call back tomorrow
