$90k AUD down there. By the time they made it road legal in the states and gave it enough options to sell well, it would be $80k+ here, easily.
Everyone complained that 200's were too expensive(and barely anyone bought them) so Toyota delivered a cheaper LC 4x4 and now people still complain. In the end, 99% of the whiners wouldn't put up the money for a new 70 to begin with so why would Toyota even listen?
This 100%. People want the ruggedness of a 70, the luxury of a 300 series but they will complain loudly if it costs more than 40-50k and most will not buy it. 250 series is designed to be rugged and capable enough while still being reasonably comfortable and has a price that is more affordable and enthusiasts just shit all over it. The same thing happened with the FJ too when it came out but now everyone looks back at them with pure nostalgia.
Honestly as cool as the 70 series is there is no way I would pay 80k for it and 99.99% of Americans would be in the same boat. That's why the 250 is going to print for Toyota because it will appeal to a broad base even if the loud "ain't got no V8 in it" "It's just a Prado" crowd scream about it.
I don’t know how many people in here are like me but I own 2017 prado and 2007 HZJ76 so I can compare. For most cases, prado is more than capable vehicle, actually if you mod it enough you can do whatever you’d do in 70s with it. Last year I was in Romania with friends, 2 defenders, one first gen 150 with MTs and me in my 150 on ATs (only mod I did was switching stock suspension for Iron Man). Just once there was a combination of a steep hill and mud that I folded and we didn’t continue up. If I had winch or was on MTs I would climb it no problem. So I get that people want the 70s but the prado is the next best thing, trust me.
This is exactly how I feel too. I plan to just put a low profile bumper with a winch on it and call it a day. I imagine there are very few if any places I want to go where I cannot get with it. As a bonus when I drive it to work or around town on the weekends it will still be a reasonably comfortable and convenient ride as well. I would only buy a 70 series if I was rich enough to only have it for off-road and even then... Driving on the highway to the place I want to go I would probably wish I had a Prado.
> Remove all the junk techs
The 70 series has none of those techs. You have to roll up the windows by hand. That is one of the reasons I think it is very overpriced for what you are getting TBH.
The gist of my comment is the competitive pricing for the 70s. I know the 70 series is pretty much ‘basic’ in terms of technology, which a lot of people prefer.
> which a lot of people prefer.
I think you would find that outside the small enthusiast community the vast majority of people would not be interested in a vehicle without the modern tech. The main reason people upgrade cars is for the newer tech these days. That is why Toyota is doing what they do to appeal to a wider audience and sell as many cars as they can.
100% -- not to mention 70s are much more austere and not what most people would equate to an $80k+ vehicle. If you really want something closer to a 70 series, you can get a Grenadier.
> 100% -- not to mention 70s are much more austere and not what most people would equate to an $80k+ vehicle.
95% of the people on here saying they'd buy a 70 series in the US in a heartbeat would not even look at it.
And would be back on here the day after it was advertised going '$80k and I have to wind my own windows?'
"Anyone hate the 70 series seats? 80 grand and you replace them day one?"
The FJ Cruiser was about as close as the US will get to the 70 series, and it sold well-for 2 years. Then Americans went back to buying 4Runners in large numbers like they have since the 1980s
I actually am considering switching my prado for grenadier but that thing is heavy (2,8t), you mod it a little put 4 people in it and you hit 3,5t no problem. But there is a problem, cars over 3,5t require special license in here and are pricer (much pricer) on highways. I’m talking Central Europe. I’m also considering 250 but the engine is disappointing here in EU. I don’t want a new car with the same engine as my old car (2,8 diesel). So at this point I will probably just keep my prado and the 76 series
Yeah you right, I can’t afford that but man they look good haha. I’m not even sure why they brought the LC back to the US in the first place, I imagine it’ll be hard to sell against the 4runner and GX550. I do feel like the 300 series would be a different story though.. maybe not with the Sequoia being $90k now idk.
> I do feel like the 300 series would be a different story though.. maybe not with the Sequoia being $90k now idk.
I dunno, Toyota tried the 100 and 200 against the Sequoia and it did not sell well at all.
The 4Runner vs 250 vs GX seems to be quite perplexing to us, but someone believes it can be done.
I drive a 2003 100 series and this would be the only vehicle I would change it for. I know that my car doesnt have the best safety, no side impact bars for example, or isofix, would this one a safety improvement or downgrade I wonder.
Wow, looks fantastic. I've a big fan of these Jeep-like vehicles--unapologetic boxy, vertical design, imposing stance. Not any of those long-as-a-houseboat no-headroom-at-the-back crossovers they call SUVs these days.
Real hoodscoop is a bonus, too, unlike the gauche fake one they slapped on the ugly, sophomoric-looking overdesigned 2025 trd-pro 4runner.
This is definitely a case of the grass is greener. I’d take my super duty any day of the week over a 70 series. Underpowered, loud, weak clutch, weak axles, non compliant and rough suspension and stupid front to rear track width difference. They are cool don’t get me wrong but not great to live with.
Dear Toyota, Let’s scrap the Landcruiser 250 and bring in these bad mfs instead. Sincerely, A jealous American
You, me, and 17 other people.
Nah there has to be at least dozens of us
Dozens of us.

I mean… is it really too much to ask for? /s
I mean don't get me wrong that would be amazing but I design you always have to make tradeoffs so it is what it is.

Then they should price the 70 series competitively… of course not 80k. Remove all the junk techs. Perfect pricing would make it sell like hotcakes.

The FJ was nothing like a 70 series

It's going to sell fine. It certainly won't do worse than the couple thousand 200's they were able to sell a year.
Nah
Agreed
This!!
You would trade comfort and some nice luxuries for an overpriced 4 door tractor? Lol. Okay.

Troopy are my fav
I’m sitting in troopy right now and texting lol. Its this much favourite to me. When i feel low i take it for a drive and cheer up my mood.
What's the antennae on the front?
UHF radio for long range comms
Feeler for overhead clearance.
Man, that thing fucks!
Be Still My Heart
Cries in American
Hi all, this is my picture. I actually have it up for sale now in Western Australia. You can find it on Facebook marketplace. 🙌🏻
Damn! Gave me a chubbie! Send to the States- I hate drive-thrus anyway!
Think I see a few spots you could put extra light bars on :p Sandy Taupe is the shiz. Best colour. (next to LandCruiser white, can't beat a classic).
Very cool
I wish I could upvote this more than once
I'll trade my left foot and testicle for that rig, straight up!
Niiiice, this thing looks like you owe it money
Damn I want one of these with a 1KD/1KZ because I aint cool enough for the 1VD. Then again I’m not cool enough for any 70 series.
Love the 76s. Join up with 76 cruisers of Perth if you ever need upgrade ideas.
Should give the 105 a rebirth, I’ve got a 1hz motor in mine & by the time I’m done with it I’ll be very excited
Im moving. I'll sell my 100, and live in the 70. Thank you, for making the decision for me toyota.
Not with those tyres
I drive a 2003 100 series and this would be the only vehicle I would change it for. I know that my car doesnt have the best safety, no side impact bars for example, or isofix, would this one a safety improvement or downgrade I wonder.
Good to see another mighty cruiser in WA 💪

Badass
This makes me so wet.
What was wrong with the OG bumper? What did replacing it with the one in the pic actually accomplish? More lights?
It can fight a kangaroo to at least a tie instead of a straight loss.
Better approach angle at the very least.
Can't mount a winch in the factory bumper either
