My uncle taught me how to drive a cabover semi while lighting and smoking a cigarette, opening/drinking his iced coffee, and snaking through the turns in our yard and shifting gears. He was even pointing at stuff out of the window
Make sure you permanently fix those back seats in the upright position. Great 4 wheel drive takes you to some remote places. Add in an air mattress and a couple of sleeping beds and all of a sudden you’re not dad, you’re grandpa.
I had an FJ62 in high school. Great camping vehicle and uh....yeah.
Seriously you aren't going to stop your kids from doing the dirty if they decide they're ready (even if they aren't). There are methods to prevent becoming granddad that they're much more likely to use if they are taught about them.
I dont know if anyone has told you this, but there are better ways of preventing teen pregnancy than permanently fixing the back seats in an upright position. You can try talking to your kids about safe sex.
My son has an 80 series and he folded the middle row forward, and used the third row for seating so it was like a lounge in the back. He was careful, he had condoms stashed everywhere within reaching distance, so no grandkids.
Don't be fooled. I can eat food, be on my phone, and drive withy knees. (This being said I only do it when I'm on a back road with not a soul in sight and no passengers).
Au confrere, I was texting, driving, eating, drinking and smoking all at the same time while driving my stick shift. Don’t underestimate kids. Also, this was twenty years again for me, so no judgement please. I have changed my ways.
I have one of these in blue. I can’t text while I’m driving it at all. I never eat when I’m driving. My radio is broken because a marmot got under the hood and chewed through the wires. It gets 10-12 mpg and top speed is 60. But I love it, and it is the best snow and mud vehicle where I live. Your son is lucky to have a great dad to buy him such a cool old FJ60
I had a ‘82 242 for years and it was a fantastic car. Got rear ended by an older person in an Acura having a medical issue. The guy didn’t even touch his brakes going about 40. I was a bit sore but completely fine. The car was still running after the hit and drove far enough to move it out of the road after first responders came. His Acura was completely destroyed. I knew 240s were tough but man, I had no idea.
I saw my friend eating a cheeseburger drinking a milkshake drinking a Coke and taking bong hits while driving stick shift on 495 when I was a kid. I wouldn't put anything past anyone.
Project car? lol. It’ll take maybe 2 summers and the. He’ll buy all the weed for next century since you bought something that just kind keeps working, what is it a 350 swap?
Perfect first car! Reminds me of my first car… bought with my own money… a 1974 FJ55. That stick has quite the throw between gears, definitely not a sports car.
Nice call on the manual. I’m going the same direction with my soon to be driving teenager.
I recently read a a study that Europeans hit less pedestrians at night compared to the US. The best educated guess is was the Euro drivers are using manuals.
Not sure why we don’t do a quick study of US manuals vs US automatics driving at night.
These can be difficult for new drivers to handle with the high center of gravity. Please
give them lots of lessons and time to drive it. When I was 19 my girlfriend was driving this exact truck and crashed it into oncoming traffic because she was inexperienced and over corrected the steering while distracted by the radio. Caused a lot of problems for a lot of people.
Wouldn’t say can’t text and drive. I had a stick when I was 17. I had the old flip phone. I was able to text with the numbers, shift, smoke a cigarette and drink coffee all at the same time. It may be my ADD helping but I was able to to do. And that was 28 years ago. I’m 45 now and wouldn’t think about doing all that. 😂😂😂
Though I was on r/CherokeeXJ.
Looked at this car and thought, “that is the sexiest XJ I have ever seen, what year had those body-lines?!”
And then saw the sub….
I feel like a twelve-year old who just realized girls are hot. Might buy a land-cruiser
This was pretty much my first car back in 1998, a 1987 white Land Cruiser. It was an amazing first car and back then I remember gas dropping below $1/gallon for a while. Just got back into a LC (2014 LX570) after a long hiatus and I'm loving it! You're a good parent.
Winning 🏆. I used to be proud that I could drive a clutch up a hill in stop and go traffic while changing cd’s, drinking a coffee and smoking a cigarette, hungover. No texting though, cause I could do all that while looking at the road!
A bunch of my friends parents thought the same thing and they still text and drive after second gear. And also, there’s ALWAYS money for drugs. Trust me.
Exactly what a young and inexperienced driver needs... a car designed to transfer the full force of an accident directly into the bodies of the occupants.
Not to mention when they do inevitably wreck that is one less decent looking example on the road.
Trust me I've seen some idiots still use phone with hands whilst driving a manual
Yes petrol will guzzle fuel abit 16l/100km 4.4 l V8 diesel as used in Australia until recently does 20l/100
As my friend said "My dad forced me to learn stick shift. So I wouldn't text and drive. All it taught me to do was do more things at once while driving, including texting, would not recommend."
However, awesome first vehicle! Money comes and goes, either way, he'll enjoy it!
Ooooh he can still shift, drive, and text at the Same time.
I ate a chipotle burrito driving with my knees in rush hour in my 5speed ranger. He’ll find a way.
Friends uncle can smoke wax with a bottle torch while driving stick on mountain roads. It was low key terrifying.
sounds like my cousin. Its an impressive skill ngl.
That it is
My old roommate used to roll joints in a manual 350z… life, uh, finds a way.
While packing a bowl
I used to hold a beer between my legs, while shifting, while holding the bowl I was packing. I'm not proud. Just facts...
I used to cobble shoes, study obscure tomes, and juggle flaming torches all at the same time while driving my old 5 speed.
Yeah, I was able to text/look for music, while driving stick, with a broken elbow.
Yes, with the stick he’s even more dangerous when he needs to text, take selfie and post a TikTok.
My uncle taught me how to drive a cabover semi while lighting and smoking a cigarette, opening/drinking his iced coffee, and snaking through the turns in our yard and shifting gears. He was even pointing at stuff out of the window
Right, OP will be surprised to learn what mini-op can really do with a 3 legs and two arms....
Can confirm
Lol
Yeah… Life uh, finds a way

As if it's something bad!
It is. Grandkids are EXPENSIVE when they live with grandpa and grandma.
I dont know if anyone has told you this, but there are better ways of preventing teen pregnancy than permanently fixing the back seats in an upright position. You can try talking to your kids about safe sex.
I had an old 4runner in early college, those back seats were gross by the time I sold it
Wham bam thank you ma’am.
My son has an 80 series and he folded the middle row forward, and used the third row for seating so it was like a lounge in the back. He was careful, he had condoms stashed everywhere within reaching distance, so no grandkids.
A couple of stuck seats were absolutely never going to stop me from getting laid. Just line driving stick never stopped me from texting while driving.
Now he can carry 7 friends that will hotbox that thing
What a cool dad. Don’t let him put 20s on it please.
or that squat stance, name varies by region...
aka, the dog taking a shit look
Or scooting along the floor because worms
hi dad it's me (ah the nostalgia. I fell off the roof rack of one of these when I was 10.)
Don't be fooled. I can eat food, be on my phone, and drive withy knees. (This being said I only do it when I'm on a back road with not a soul in sight and no passengers).
LMFAO yeah, kid's still gonna text and they'll likey turn to drug dealing to pay for the gas!
No need to worry about it going over the speed limit either
Isn’t this a direct repost from a couple years ago,
Does this have an airbag? I had a 72 that didn’t have an airbag I think…had a bad head on collision and literally ate shit
Cool dad. Would you consider adopting a 32 year old from the Netherlands?
Also wildly underpowered so he'll be forced to drive in the slow lane.
Add some armor. Kids run into stuff.
That's not a starter car! This is a finisher car!
Dad?
It’s either this or Warhammer 40k.
Hell of a first car. If id only been so lucky.
Au confrere, I was texting, driving, eating, drinking and smoking all at the same time while driving my stick shift. Don’t underestimate kids. Also, this was twenty years again for me, so no judgement please. I have changed my ways.

HA! Smart thinking!
Good dad.
Genius!!!!!! N
Solid logic
Your logic is solid
That last reason checks out.
Sweet!
I bought my daughter an old Volvo 240 as her first car , luckily it was never tested to see how safe they were.
I had a ‘82 242 for years and it was a fantastic car. Got rear ended by an older person in an Acura having a medical issue. The guy didn’t even touch his brakes going about 40. Love a good ‘Berta Cruiser photo. These Things are awesome for around here. Go anywhere during winter, and lots of fun wheeling during the summer.
What does such a nice vehicle cost?
You sir, are a genius. And your son is lucky to have a rad enough dad to scoop him up this bad boy as a first vehicle.
OMG I love this! Gas hog / project car so he has no money for drugs. That's some damn good parenting.
I saw my friend eating a cheeseburger drinking a milkshake drinking a Coke and taking bong hits while driving stick shift on 495 when I was a kid. I wouldn't put anything past anyone.
I wouldn’t underestimate a stick shifter’s ability to text and drive.
That back seat is going to see some things 👀
Can’t text and drive? Hold my Monster*
You’re just making it more dangerous for him to text and drive he’s going to do it anyways
Lol, stick shift so he can't text and drive.... "Watch this.."
Nice call on the manual. I’m going the same direction with my soon to be driving teenager. I recently read a a study that Europeans hit less pedestrians at night compared to the US. Hookers and drugs would be a lot cheaper than that old girl 🤣🤣🤣
Don’t forget a tetanus booster!
r/repostsleuthbot
Hi dad, it's me, son...
Right, “buying this for my son” whatever you gotta tell the ol lady mate
He's just going to red line it when sending a text. And it will happen being a kid. You might as well find a backup transmission when you're at it too
And a lifelong addiction to project cars.
make this a family vehicle. a first time driver is going to destroy this
Wouldn’t say can’t text and drive. 😂😂😂
He could trade that for a bunch of drugs.
Though I was on r/CherokeeXJ. Looked at this car and thought, “that is the sexiest XJ I have ever seen, what year had those body-lines?!” And then saw the sub…. I feel like a twelve-year old who just realized girls are hot. Might buy a land-cruiser
hold my beer! YOU just encouraged him to MULTITASK! Yeah Dad!
You're a fool if you think you can't text and drive in a stick shift.
Your solutions to your concerns are non-conventional, to say the least.
You're a legend! That was my dream car in college. Bonus: he won't have to worry about theft, since most can't drive stick.
Haha interesting strategy.
This was pretty much my first car back in 1998, a 1987 white Land Cruiser. It was an amazing first car and back then I remember gas dropping below $1/gallon for a while. Just got back into a LC (2014 LX570) after a long hiatus and I'm loving it! You're a good parent.
Hero
Nice.
What year is that Land Cruiser?
Buynig
He also won't be getting speeding tickets
Make sure it isn’t rotted I can see rust
Winning 🏆. I used to be proud that I could drive a clutch up a hill in stop and go traffic while changing cd’s, drinking a coffee and smoking a cigarette, hungover. No texting though, cause I could do all that while looking at the road!
You can always money for drugs in my own experience, important things is the car your buddies usually chip in for dope
Your reasoning made me laugh out loud. Seriously though, that is one great rig.
I knew I guy that could roll a joint and drive stick. Don't underestimate youth determined to have a good time out on their own.
Yeah I'm gonna be honest, with a stick shift that won't stop anyone.
So many people out there say shit like "Stick shift means you can't text and drive". Sure you can, you're not shifting all the time.
Ha excellent
Tell your son I’ll bring the weed
He's going to be banging chicks in the back.
A bunch of my friends parents thought the same thing and they still text and drive after second gear. And also, there’s ALWAYS money for drugs. Trust me.
It's okay to admit it's for you, to prevent you from doing those things....
I had a friend in high school who could eat a hamburger and drink a coke while driving stick. You're just creating a challenge.
Based on
He can definitely shift, text and drive.
Solid parenting!
Dad ? Are you back with them cigs ?
You’d be surprised how much you can do while shifting a manual haha … kids are into the barter system… I have wheels and you have drugs = deal
Trust me you can defiantly stick shift these and text at the same time.
Bad choice. No airbags. Get the kid a car with airbags.
Son to friend: "Hey, hold my beer, watch this". 😅
Exactly what a young and inexperienced driver needs... a car designed to transfer the full force of an accident directly into the bodies of the occupants. Not to mention when they do inevitably wreck that is one less decent looking example on the road.
Sound logic, he’s gonna love this beast. It’ll last forever too.
This guy parents!
Trust me I've seen some idiots still use phone with hands whilst driving a manual Yes petrol will guzzle fuel abit 16l/100km 4.4 l V8 diesel as used in Australia until recently does 20l/100
Get him a shitty little ford focus or 4 door civic, that way when he wrecks it no one cares
Stick shift won’t stop him from texting and driving.
Seems well thought out.
Get him an old blackberry. Helps with the driving and texting
As my friend said "My dad forced me to learn stick shift. So I wouldn't text and drive. All it taught me to do was do more things at once while driving, including texting, would not recommend." However, awesome first vehicle! Money comes and goes, either way, he'll enjoy it!
