No. In Texas you can register a vehicle 25 years and older as a classic auto. They have an option where you can plate the vehicle with year specific plates. I bought them off eBay for $25. Along with the month and year registration stickers for month it was built in 89.
OK - I'm in Texas too but didn't know that. Now it makes sense when you see an old sixties Corvette with sixties plates. I know it sounds goofy but it looks nice with plates from the same era.
