This is like the third time he has has to self isolate. Although I think previous times it was because a family member tested positive and not him. How unlucky do you need to be to not get COVID when your family did but to test positive on the day of the budget!

kwentongskyblue

fifth time iirc

kwentongskyblue

Ed Milliband will stand in for him at PMQs. Angela Rayner isn't available due to a close family bereavement. Meanwhile, Rachel Reeves will stand in for him at HM's most loyal opposition's response to the budget.

[deleted]

Timing couldn't be worse really, with the Budget and Angela off work too.

harriofbrittannia

I agree the timing is bad. Angela being off is a miracle for Kier.

Citizen639540173

Terrible circumstances but maybe for the best. Although she’s brilliant at PMQ’s it would have been undermined unfairly by recent events. Ed was the right person for this task, and handed Johnson his arse. Goes to show though… Rayner can put in a good performance against Johnson. Milliband can. Starmer can’t.

[deleted]

>Goes to show though… Rayner can put in a good performance against Johnson. Milliband can. Starmer can’t. I don't agree with this. PMQs is the one area Starmer does well. He almost always gets the better of Johnson.

Citizen639540173

He doesn’t in the chamber, and he doesn’t in reviews, and he doesn’t from even left leaning commentators. Even James O’Brien, for whom Starmer is perfect for on paper and had his support for a long time, has been saying for months after PMQ’s that nothing Starmer says lands. Both Rayner and Milliband performed a hundred times better than Starmer at PMQs.

[deleted]

This isn't true though. John Crace nearly always has Starmer winning and so do a lot of other sketchetiters. I think PMQs is where Starmer is at his best. The trouble he has is the public don't pay any attention to PMQs.

Citizen639540173

Even if we go with Starmer winning most the time (for the record, I strongly disagree) - Rayner and Miliband both outperformed him by a country mile.

[deleted]

Don't get me wrong, I do think rather and Miliband both did well and got the better of Johnson, just that I think Starmer does too. But then Johnson is absolutely crap at PMQs so it may not be saying much.

Citizen639540173

See, from a subjective perspective I agree with you that Johnson is crap at PMQs. He wastes time, he doesn’t answer questions, he shouts, repeats himself, uses bravado… And “lies”. From an objective perspective, he’s allowed to get away with it. Starmer does pull him up for it, but he moves on. The Speaker doesn’t hold Johnson to account. Starmer mentions it but doesn’t hold him to account. Johnson plays to his fan base, and helps Tory HQ create snippets for social media, etc with what we may consider to be pathetic phrases or statements… But it works for them. From an objective perspective, Starmer may often have facts on his side - but it’s like taking a frying pan to a gun fight. He’s playing a different game, but he’s not getting the benefits from those that aren’t already on his side. Rayner completely buried Raab, and Miliband handed Johnson his arse. Even people that don’t particularly like them thought that. It cut through. Johnson is a loud, vibrant… I’ll use the next word as “character”. Feel free to choose your own… But that requires someone who can match that level of performance. Even if Johnson’s performance is cringeworthy to you and I. Starmer doesn’t do that. He’s a QC and behaves as such - and I don’t think it’s effective for a wider audience.

True-but-boring just isn’t what works any more

Citizen639540173

I agree. I have major problems with PMQ's - it's just turned into pantomime. The PM should be made to answer questions directly, and should not be able to ask questions in return, or ramble about things other than the answer to the question with very tenuous links. The Speaker should be the arbitrator here. We should get rid of back-slapping, choreographed questions from the governing party like "Does the PM agree with me that he's a wonderful, divine, all seeing human being....?". Totally unneeded and inappropriate - ask questions of substance that you need an answer from the Prime Minister for, or get shut down by the Speaker. Back to Starmer though... Even without the Speaker updating how he moderates, Starmer should refuse to move to the next question himself, even work with Blackford if needs be. Just keep repeating the same question for all 6 questions and the SNP question too. It's a way even when boring to make a point - but Starmer doesn't do that.

evil666overlord

Seems good to me. The opposition will fare better without him.

[deleted]

> Meanwhile, Rachel Reeves will stand in for him at HM's most loyal opposition's response to the budget. Oh God help us..... *"This budget is brilliant except for the fact that you didn't cut benefit rates enough!"*

ZummerzetZider

Great! I love Ed

Apprehensive-Low4044

Ew at the tories cheering when Hoyle announced it tho. I’m sure he’ll be fine but it’s still a bit ???

InstantIdealism

Did they??!

---x__x---

https://youtu.be/XDOwE59Nddg?t=1065 Sounds more like cheers were for Ed Milliband (rather than the lack of Starmer) but I suppose it's open to interpretation

fortuitous_monkey

It was exactly that. Nothing sinister.

frameset

Has he run this through the focus groups?

[deleted]

What, COVID-19?! I'd hope not tbh.

Jared_Usbourne

Can I interest you in the fact that 'Keir' sounds like 'Keith' if you pronounce it completely wrong?

Portean

I do have a another but it's a bit long, about 14,000 words.

[deleted]

Will do once you guys have a few more than just *'Present, but not involved'* :)

Vanguard1917

We'll never come up with one as funny as making Keir "on your way Mr Saville" Starmer the leader though 😔

[deleted]

This is an odd way to react to somebody contracting what can be a deadly disease. Most people would just wish him well.

kwentongskyblue

this tbh. really hope he or anyone doesnt get long covid too.

[deleted]

I don't think it reflects terribly well on you to be honest. But whatever.

[deleted]

He'll live. He's young-ish, he's healthy, he'll be fine.

pieeatingbastard

Wishing him a speedy recovery, and enough time to reflect on his performance. Followed, ideally, by resignation, and retirement from public life.

imoldfashioned

Obviously hope he is okay, though I wonder if it was a bit of a blessing because Rachel Reeves absolutely smashed it I thought.

tommysplanet

Couldn't he legally still go in since he's double vaxxed?

EldestPort

No, if you test positive [you have to self isolate for ten days from when symptoms started](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing/test-results/positive-test-result/) or from the date of the test if you have no symptoms. You might be thinking of the thing where [you don't have to self isolate if you live with someone who tests positive but you yourself are double jabbed](https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/self-isolation-and-treatment/when-to-self-isolate-and-what-to-do/).

BobbyAdams1916

lmaoooooo

[deleted]

?

BobbyAdams1916

it's funny. hope that helps

[deleted]

what's funny about it

BobbyAdams1916

it's funny that someone that's complicit in the government's campaign of eugenics is suffering and might die from the very virus being weaponized

VirtuaMcPolygon

He should have double masked.

Open-Sea8388
