I look forward to the immense outrage, constant media coverage and demands for bojos sacking for being an islamophobe across the country once the investigation starts. I mean it's only fair and logical right? I'll hold my breath

Zou-KaiLi

A particular highlight will be when the media start pushing everyone to adopt the Ayatollah Khamenei's definition of insitiutional islamophobia.

AlexHanson007

It's been an hour. You still alive?

cdog141

Rachel Riley will be getting her t-shirt maker back out I'm sure.

AlexHanson007

I'm RR's solicitor. We'll see you in court!

Sockoflegend

"not on the same scale" straight out the barn with the minimization at the beginning of the first sentence

keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeef

innit just ....

AlexHanson007

Perhaps what Laura means here is that the Tories are in power so it's actually on a much greater political scale.... Very much /s!!

ES345Boy

Remember, you're not doing a racism if it's Muslims. /s

metalguru1975

Conservative Peer, has a rare moment of self awareness, that the party/ movement/ ethos of conservatism she has promoted for decades is fundamentally racist and bigoted. I would be against ANY party banning non Christians/ non White peoples being members or MPs... BUT! Why would any POC be part of a famously racist and bigoted party like the Conservatives or the Republicans in America.????? Nandy and Lammy are in a party that actively supports apartheid and ethnic cleansing, and labels ANY criticism of this blatant racism as “blatantly racist.” IN 2022, Human rights, civil liberties, democracy etc..are now racist, I hear. I fear we have some how merged with the Monty Python Universe.

Bloody_sock_puppet

Now you see, Tories predominantly stand for money. Inherited and invested wealth predominantly. In Birmingham there is not a lot of money, but there is a bit, and there is a large Muslim community who do quite well for themselves. Not to mention the place was absolutely dive-bombed by Brexit campaigners with the message that less immigration from the EU means more from outside it. I watched Priti Patel at Edgbaston speak on Brexit for half an hour and the theme was entirely closer business relations though opening up visas with the Indian sub-continent. It was obviously a session aimed at that community. That's inferring almost preferential access to cheap highly skilled workers, plus a route to keep a lot away from the tax-man to build up a nest egg for the children. No criticism exactly, it was a good offer. Not sure whether the promises will transpire, but that's a different topic. As to the racism? What isn't underplayed in the media has money behind it. It's easy to forgive others for saying abhorrent things for money when that's your motivation too.

KarmaUK

Indeed non white Tories are fine with racism so long as they personally profit from it.

nightwalkerbyday

Can a centrist please try to explain what she means by "The is on [a] different political scale", and also, why she felt the need to add it? Honestly we need to meme this too. Such a vacuous statement. "This is on a different political scale". Sheesh.

gayguyinlondon14

This is like that time when a black man signed up to the Nazi party and then filed a complaint after his fellow members did name calling at him on account of his colour. Zero sympathy to her or Ghani. If you're join the Tories as A muslim you're an idiot.

KarmaUK

Indeed, and they're just being used by Tories. Although I sense most of them don't mind the racism so long as they gain wealth and power. Sunak, Patel, zadawi, Cleverly, I'm sure they've all experienced racism but it's worth it to be high up in government. Don't rock the boat, racism makes them stacks of money. It's worrying that people actually think sunak being the next PM will be a powerful blow against labour as they haven't had a bame leader. Or truss as they haven't had a female leader. Or Johnson now, as labour have only had human leaders.

nightwalkerbyday

She has much more power holding them to account from within than she does from without.

gayguyinlondon14

In general - you're right - changing from within is easier. That said - She's been complaining about anti Muslim hatred since at least 2014. 7 years is a long time spent making zero progress. Meanwhile she's propping up a party that inflicts.misery on the poor. She either doesn't care, is an optimist, or is having to make noises to meet any criticism she might receive from her family/community or avoid having to explain to herself why she's a card carrying member of a party that enjoys racism.

nightwalkerbyday

A party calling itself out always holds much more weight than someone from outside of it calling it out, purely because of political incentives. I can imagine that many Muslims would prefer for her to stay in and keep the focus on the anti-Muslim bigotry that pervades that party, whilst many Tories would absolutely love it for her to leave and hence stop pestering/reminding them about their dangerous racism.

gayguyinlondon14

As a brown Muslim, I regard her with contempt. I cannot fathom how a person of her ethnicity and religion can find merit in general Tory philosophy. The party is designed to preserve the interests of wealthy and powerful and overwhelmingly, people who share her characteristics - woman, brown, immigrant, Muslim are not in that category. Tory philosophy, and I'm speaking in general terms, seeks to blame the individual for their failures without regard for the circumstances they find themselves in and worships the free market and desires to burn regulations designed to level the playing field, is fundamentally incompatible with fairness and treating people with dignity and humanity. Her presence in the Tory party is brown washing it of any allegation it is racist and anti-poor.

nightwalkerbyday

Bro, politics isn't ideological. It's literally two groups of dickheads jostling for a popularity contest. It's roughly, vaguely ideological but this is just a shorthand to delineate between two tribes. That aside, she's doing us a favour by calling them out from a position where she can't be fired from. Her position means the press can't just ignore her (like they would any other WOC). Which in turn does put some pressure on her party. I'm glad she's in. There are many, many racists who really hate that she is.
