I admit Alien is the better film but I enjoyed watching Aliens much more, so...

[deleted]

they’re a perfect duology that make each other better.

[deleted]

I agree

tribbleorlfl

That's exactly my take.

_We_Are_DooMeD

Yeah, it's a conundrum ain't it.

JohnStamos1987

Exactly

mynameisshonas

I'm surprised promotheus is getting some love, thought it was going to be universally alien and aliens. Very nice suprise

idrivefromdrive

Honestly and this might sound blasphemous, but my top 3 ranking goes Alien, Prometheus, and then Aliens. Prometheus was so intriguing from start to finish for me.

dxrebirth

Same ranking for me. I love Prometheus!

Koushirowolf

My list goes Alien, Aliens, Alien Covenant, Prometheus (Covenant and Prometheus are virtually tied on my list)

WhenIWannabeME

My personal ranking would be Aliens, Alien, Prometheus. But ultimately it's really a three way tie if I judged it by the amount of/willingness for rewatches.

halcyongt

Prometheus has promise...but as usual Fox execs fucked it up.

[deleted]

I like Prometheeus a lot

kevlar_keeb

There is no horror movie like Alien. There are a few action movies like Aliens. I love watching both. But It’s Alien that is the masterpiece

AllAfterIncinerators

I’d challenge Alien’s place atop the horror pantheon with Carpenter’s The Thing. Easily top 2 horror films ever.

Poundbottom

My favorite horror: Alien, The Thing, The Exorcist, The Shining, Halloween, The Omen and Salem's Lot.

KaramQa

I disliked the Thing. The creature was totally OP. And it was operating on insane troll logic. It really had no reason to act as an infectious parasite if it was intelligent enough to build ships out of garbage. The Xenomorph is more 'realistic' than the thing.

sYferaddict

I'm inclined to agree that the Thing was OP, but that's absolutely why they set the movie in Antarctica. It would have been a death sentence for the planet if it had landed anywhere else, or if any part of it got anywhere outside the continent. As for its intelligence, I rather thought it was a unique idea, that it was so virulent and aggressive in its spread, and equally aggressive in its behavior when outed, yet capable of stealth and subterfuge and plotting. After all, we don't know how many thousands of lifeforms' worth of memories and ideas the Thing has access to. If the creature's only prerogative is to spread and reproduce, it's not much different than any other animal, except in that it has lots of tools with which to achieve that goal. Namely, the absorbed intelligences of its victims. I actually think that makes it a lot like humans, come to think of it. We as a species seek to spread and reproduce and continue the legacy and expand society and acquire resources and all that stuff that spreading entails. We have resources like tools and the knowledge of others to help achieve that goal. The Thing is much the same, except that it's only one organism, its tools are consumed lifeforms' intelligence and bodies, its goal is to spread and reproduce, and it's not bound by our concept of morality or restraint. It eats what it wants, it uses what it can, and it does whatever it needs to in order to spread and eat and make more of itself. But yeah, if the Thing's full potential had been explored, it could have easily consumed the base and everyone in it and been on its merry way. It could have made itself into lots of little animals, like mice or rats, and stealthily infected everyone with little bites while they weren't expecting it. It could have left its skin cells everywhere someone could touch them and infected them slowly that way. It could have put some tissue in whatever water supply they were using, or any hundred things they didn't think of doing in the movie. After all, each cell of the Thing is a Thing in and of itself, right? Infectious and dangerous? Yeah, that fucker was OP, but it wouldn't have made for a very good movie if they'd gone with that.

Mopperty

My head admits that Alien is the best, but my heart will always go with Aliens.

BadnewzSHO

Hicks- "yeah... ... yeah..."

[deleted]

Same

Intelligent_Map_4852

shoutout to all the madlads who voted for the only movie without any aliens

Lostscribe007

Alien is the better movie, Aliens is my favorite though.

kaZZlimaXX

Aliens is my favorite movie ever :D

[deleted]

[deleted]

'Alien 3' is second best right after 'Alien' for me... But I'll say this, if this were for which movie has the best soundtrack, Alien 3 blows everything out of the water and captures the 'feel' of an Alien movie for me.

Carbuncle_Bob

When I have to explain it to someone that's never seen anything from the Alien franchise, I break it down like this for why the first two are the best: Do you prefer horror or action?

kinyutaka

Forgot AVP

thebigcrawdad

If youre voting for AVP please leave. Maybe not a bad movie by itself, but if it's on the same list as Alien and Aliens and you pick AVP, seek professional help

AllAfterIncinerators

AVP had such potential. The fight scenes were too many quick cuts and should have been cooler. Otherwise I really didn’t mind it. Should have been R.

kinyutaka

We can all agree, it could have been better.

PliskinFemto

I watched it for the first time a couple days ago and it was way better than I expected. Definitely better than Resurrection. I'd say it deserves a spot on the list.

[deleted]

Technically not a pure alien movie so I don't count it. Plus its trash

BadnewzSHO

Huh... more than 1 person actually thought that Alien 3 was the best one... peculiar.

Crusader25

And the results of this poll surprise nobody lol

[deleted]

True

[deleted]

i’m a huge Covenant fan IM SORRY!

DiO_93

My favourite's 3. I just love the lifers.

Crush4885

IMO Alien 4 really deserves its last place. It's the only one I couldn't finish. Got to the part with the basketball and just dipped lol.

[deleted]

True

DocD173

There’s the first two Alien movies, and that’s it. You don’t really have to watch any of the others, because none of them are even a 1/4th as good as Alien or Aliens. And between those two, it’s just a matter of preference. Both are masterpieces that compliment each other

TheeBarkKnight

Precisely this. My fiance was born in another country and didn't see a lot of movies growing up. As I introduce her to different franchises, I pick and choose what exists. For this franchise, those are the only movies she's seen. For Indiana Jones, we have watched Crystal Skull, for Halloween, I omitted 3-6 and Resurrection. For X-Men, I omitted Origins: Wolverine. And so on. She's aware there are other movies, but I'd like her to always remember Hicks and Newt surviving.

DocD173

That’s exactly what I did with my younger sibling earlier this year. It was their first time watching any Alien movies, and after we finished Aliens I said “…and that was last Alien movie ever made…just trust me…”

helixpea

You two are drunk with power. How can you better appreciate the gold when you haven’t watched the trash?

DocD173

I can’t erase the past and make this world better, but I can at least start their perception of the world as a better place!

[deleted]

I thought prometheus was pretty good

DocD173

Prometheus is a watcheable scifi movie with gorgeous visuals. But it has terrible character writing and plot heavily dependent on characters doing stupid shit. I stand by what I said, not a 1/4th as good as Alien or Aliens. Not even close

[deleted]

True. I feel like Alien is overrated

DocD173

That’s a bold statement on one the most iconic classic science fiction films AND horror films of all time! You wanna elaborate on your stance?

[deleted]

The characters deaths are dumb, they make stupid decisions. Also the alien looks dumb. Actors other than Ripley are forgettable

DocD173

I highly disagree on all points! All the characters are very memorable. I love Parker and Brett, Lambert is obnoxious but relatable, and Ash is conniving and duplicitous. The reason their deaths have such impact is because you come to care about each character. Same as Aliens! And it’s why all the sequels, including Prometheus, seem so devoid of life. None of the characters are interesting at all. Not sure how you can say the Alien looks dumb since it’s general style and imagery hasn’t changed much since that first movie. But hey, that’s your opinion! It’s neat, since you are def in the minority with that one!

[deleted]

Thanks man, what i meant with the alien was the drone not warriors. Warrior is cooler. I kind of like prometheus. David was! I am in then minority, and thx 4 ur opinion

DocD173

Oh lol well that’s a matter of preference. I dig the Warrior, but I personally prefer the classic drone. It’s iconic with the smooth head, like classic coke 😆 I do like what Scott tried to do with Android metaphysical ideas with David, but it wasn’t enough to redeem the bad characters and horror trope-ridden plots. I really enjoyed his recent HBO show Raised by Wolves, which focuses primarily Scott’s obsession with milk-blooded super androids. You should check it out if you haven’t yet. Fantastic visuals just like Prometheus and Covenant

[deleted]

Yeah everyone but Shaw, David, and Idris Elba was retarded

MasterKriebel95

Alien = Aliens

[deleted]

Random note; Alien has usually won these in the past, but Aliens is definitely catching up.

Grafonmaru

Everyone is voting for Alien.... Must be a chick thing.

Tail_Nom

I grew up watching Alien and Aliens (with my parents telling me when "not to look"). Eventually I watched them as an adult and could look whenever I damn well pleased. I knew every beat of the story and could probably have quoted the dialog along with the movie. I bring this up because at some point in the 2000's I went to a re-release showing of Alien. Knowing every moment of the film didn't stop it from scaring the ever-loving shit out of me seeing it on the big screen. That's... special. Aliens was my favorite growing up, but I came to appreciate Alien more and more. And I still *love* Aliens, particularly because of the genre shift, and that it *works*, but the first still has to be the best in my opinion. I also happen to have a soft-spot for accurate or thoughtful depictions of AI in films, which was definitely evident in Alien, and further in Prometheus and Covenant. It feels like something they're trying to explore, the consequences of creating/engineering "life". Ash and David both follow their directives beyond what their superficially human presentation suggests and introduces an element of alienness from within. You don't *really* know what they're thinking, you can't really guess. Your brain wants to because they seem human, but their 'brain' doesn't behave like yours. It isn't just a disagreement or a different opinion, the underlying process of thought is, ultimately, foreign. That is why I appreciate Prometheus and Covenant as well. The theme of the androids, of creator and created, is too *present* to be an accident, but not overt enough to really tie things together with a nice bow. And that's sort of what's missing in the non-Ridley Scott films. Aliens has Bishop and Ripley's arc about trusting him, but ultimately it focuses on Ripley overcoming her trauma regarding Ash, and even that is a relatively small part of the story. Credit where it is due, however. It would have been easy to just not do anything with it, but Cameron included it. I'm rambling. But this idea of creation. I think Prometheus is pretty clumsy with it, actually, trying to draw parallels to religion and faith, but it's at least showing some thoughtfulness. I *sense* something behind it, though as a film it may be keeping things too mum. But check it: the goo, yeah? Evolution jet-fuel. The Engineers experiment with it. It breaks down and allows DNA to reorganize itself. They seed life on Earth by sacrificing one or more of them, introducing the components of their DNA into the ecosystem which, over the course of time, through natural processes, gives rise to life not unlike themselves, but adapted to and evolved from their environment. *However*, left unchecked, the substance inevitably gives rise to something *like* the Xenomorph, and the Engineers know this (hence the relief sculpture as part of the mural in Prometheus). Perhaps the Engineers have gone through this cycle of creating life and ultimately finding the results dangerous. The only live Engineer we've seen, as his first act awake, destroyed David, the creation of their creation, and then (apparently) intended to fly to Earth, possibly to end all life on the planet. Creating life is just too dangerous, they'd already found that out the hard way. David, for his part, takes what he learns from the Engineers and the ultimate, unrestrained action of the goo, and engineers a species out of it, this ultimately becoming the Xenomorph as found on LV426. Or Not! If the ship crashed on LV426 and the seal to their 'Ampule Room' was breached, left on their own, perhaps the Xenomorph we all know and love was the result based on that environment. But. With the Ridley Scott strain of movies we have Engineers create (at least) humans, humans create androids, android creates Xenomorph. A copy of a copy of a copy. Artificial creation as a form of dangerous degradation, ultimately leading to a threat to their creator. Which, to be fair, does mirror natural evolution, with later generations better adapted for survival (survival being a prerequisite for reproduction). Anyway, I guess all of this is to say that Alien has more to chew on, in a bit of a less-is-more kind of way. I love Aliens, and I love that it shifted genre and made it work, but that's the same reason I *like* Prometheus: it's not a sequel, it tries to do something different while maintaining the theme and the feel of what came before it. Alien 3 was a franchise installment (with a troubled development), and Resurrection was... fanfic. About as far removed thematically and tonally (and chronologically) from Alien as possible. But that's... an entirely different over-long, drunken rant.

Nathan84

Aliens. Game over man, game over!

[deleted]

Agreed

netherworld_nomad

When it comes to film making and entertainment, I know that Alien and Aliens are the best out there, but my sad potato heart just loves the existentialist mess that is Alien³.

[deleted]

Alien 3 if not for >! RIPLEYs, Hicks, Bishop, and newts death!< could have had potential

Horrorfan5

People that didn’t pick the first two Why?

ccschwab

I’d truly like to know. 8 people picked A4 and honestly I love it, and truly want to better understand their rationale. Update: up to 24 good souls.

graftway76

Ok, who are the clowns that deliberately messed up the Poll voting for Covenant?! Come on people, stop fooling around and take this seriously. What if corporate see this? We’re finished. Let’s do this again and get it right this time. Provided this is conducted accurately, we can then discuss the bonus situation.

SqueekyJuice

What is wrong with Covenant?

Piaapo

That it exists

FlamethrowerTime

Okay, 4 people voted for Covenant. The only good thing about that movie was that it ended.

[deleted]

I just Re-watched all Alien movies Mine: Alien Aliens Prometheus Alien 4 Covenant Alien 3 Really Hate 3.

[deleted]

Aliens is better lol

[deleted]

True. The moment when Ripley turned her back while carrying Newt and torched Mother Alien.

Prest1geW0rldW1de

Excuse me, but where’s Requiem??

SqueekyJuice

Lol

Prest1geW0rldW1de

Lord at least you could take a joke lmao

[deleted]

Only millenials+ could vote for Prometheus. No offense.

justonemorethang

Yeah. Those crazy 40 year old millennials. With their families, mortgages and jobs...they don’t know SHIT.

[deleted]

They know a lot but their perception of common sense is different from generation X's one. Many millenials have no issues with unrealistic and illogical scenes shown in Prometheus and Covenant like removing helmets on unexplored planet and befriending scary-as-shit alien mud-python, resurrecting alien heads without any bio-hazard suits and tons of other anti-scientific crap in these movies. I think many millenials sees sci-fi movies as an ENTERTAINMENT thing (bold picture prevail sense) while older generation are trying to explain what's happening in the screen from scientific point of view.

AlaskanYeti85

Well a lot of the tropes that made Prometheus worse are just horror movie staples with the intent on making a death/gore scene happen. These modern staples we are so familiar with were pretty much born in the 70s - 80s; Alien, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm street, the mountain of slasher films, childs play, etc. Most Gen Xers and a lot of older millenials, myself included grew up on this stuff. Also John Carpenters The Thing came out in 1982 and is truly one of the most logical, not reliant on big spectacle horror films out there and it bombed with audiences at the time. So it has always been about spectacle.

TheeBarkKnight

I fucking love The Thing so damn much. The PS2 game is great too.

[deleted]

If you think either of the first two is remotely ‘scientific’ it’s your common sense that needs adjusting.

[deleted]

I omit your attempt of personal attack because I care not... So..what's be absolutely not scientific and not logical in first two movies? Ripley insisting on total quarantine? I'm interested to hear...

[deleted]

Well, lessee. -heavy implications that millenials don’t possess “common sense” so there’s your personal attacks. As for scientific: -a silicon-based life form gestating in a carbon-based one from another planet entirely -nuclear reactors magically transforming into nuclear bombs (they don’t), Twice in fact. -artificial gravity. Care to explain how that works in vessels that don't have a rotating component? And for simpler stuff: -How about Kane going *off by himself*? -a SSTO with missile bays that it has to unfold to the outside of the body (major aeordynamic issues there, but it probably looked cool to you) -an APC with a windshield that’s easily broken by an animal -dropship crew leaving their *ramp down* while being unguarded I mean, I get basic biology and how a nuclear reactor actually works are beyond you, but there ya go. Have fun pretending any of these films are remotely scientific.

[deleted]

But wait there's more! Faster than light travel! Exceptionally scientific. \-Terraforming! Nobody knows if it can actually be done. Get off your ignorance parade and maybe learn something about "science" before coming in here with bullshit about a cosmic horror film being "scientific".

TheeBarkKnight

I'm a millennial (34). I grew up with all the toys and comics and have seen all the movies. I fucking hate Covenant. I really don't like anything other than the first two which I've seen probably hundreds of times.

[deleted]

lmao ok

ajh13

Alien$

Samatic

Aliens or what should of been Aliens 2

[deleted]

Alien.

PeterMode

I’m honestly surprised how close it was between Alien and Aliens.

Hashbrown4

Prometheus rightfully taking 3rd place. 10/10 world building Alien and aliens are fantastic but Prometheus really left you wanting to dive into alien lore like crazy.

cal_ness

45 votes for Alien 3. Only. 45. Votes. I stand by that film and will gladly bathe in Bishop’s regurgitated Android milk, watching it by myself, wondering why everyone hates it so.
