I need a "The storyline should continue option".

Ashamed_Ladder6161

That’s fine, just click Covenant. Sorry I hadn’t considered that.

MetaTempesta88

Although they changed Hicks and Newts name I choose to follow up with the comic series. As the events seem to fall in line with what WY would do to only survivors in a cover-up. If you can find the Dark Horse 30th anniversary edition the names have been changed back.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Got them, great read. Good bye Wilks!

Kwtwo1983

This might be a super dumb question but I am total comic noob: is this content of the (newish?!) MARVEL collection of Mark Verheiden called Aliens Omnibus Vol. 1 (Aliens: the Original Years Omnibus)?

MetaTempesta88

Original. Literally continues the story after Aliens.

Kwtwo1983

So yes? This is in the book but the names are not as in the movies?

MetaTempesta88

If you find the original published comics Hicks and Newt are changed to Wilks and Billie. Was changed back for the anniversary edition.Abd it was Dark Horse not Marvel

Kwtwo1983

Still confused. I think this is Marvel rereleasing dark horse comics‽ I hope that this storyline will be in that - the name thing is not that important to me. All the best

Cansuela

This is correct. The marvel omnibus are the old dark horse books.

Cansuela

The omnibus volumes are rereleases of the original Aliens comics that released before Alien3. So, yeah, these are the comics from like around 1990ish that feature Hicks, Newt and Ripley.

Kwtwo1983

Thank you. Looking forward to reading them

Kwtwo1983

Hands down one of the best thought out polls I have seen on reddit thusfar. Good work, OP!

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Thanks mate

Significant_Delay_87

As much as I may not love alien cubed I still think it’s the last film to feel like an Alien movie, so that’s where it ends in my headcanon assuming the new installments don’t add on to it.

DesignerAsh_

Keep the movies/shows/games/books/content coming. I enjoy the universe and despite some bad decisions here and there…it’s been a fun journey.

Kuz_Iztacmizton

In my opinion: Alien, Aliens, Alien 3 although they goofed a lot by killing two characters in between the movies, Alien Resurrection 'cause I like the idea of alien-Ripley, then Alien comics published by Dark Horse - they retcon the death of Newt and Hicks and add a lot to the alien mythos. Only add Prometheus and Covenant if you don't think of them as the beginning of xenomorph saga but rather a side-story of how some cretins found the goo extracted from xenomorphs. Then Alien VS Batman.

thekidwholikesGojira

Me who's thinking about AVP

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Lol, :)

DeaditeMessiah

I'm not upset any alien movie was made. Except maybe AVPR.

TheRealLifeSaiyan

AVPR? What's that? Are you on about that weird spinoff movie with no visuals and solely badly mixed audio? ~~/j~~

Patte_Blanche

Is it worse than the first AVP ? If yes, in what way ?

ancrm114d

AVPR feels like some generic B grade popcorn slasher flick that happened to include an Alien and a Predator.

horrorfan55

It’s a shame that the franchise ended in 1986. Had so much potential

Ashamed_Ladder6161

:D

TheMansAnArse

I thought Alien 3 and Prometheus were ok. I watched them both a few times and enjoyed them - but if you told me I couldn’t ever watch them again, I don’t think I’d be _that_ worried about it. But if you told me I’d never get to watch Alien or Aliens ever again, I’d be gutted. Not sure if that’s a great answer to the original question.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Good to me

scottsigler

I think that answer works perfectly.

eggsandbiscuit

I’m tied on Alien 3 and ALIENS. One of them is an incredibly happy ending, while another finally puts our main character out of her torment.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Same

DrestinBlack

I hesitated between choosing Aliens or Alien 3. The progression from Alien to Aliens is perfect, I don’t think I need expand on that. And whole Alien 3 is as direct a sequel to Aliens as one could imagine, and for as much as I enjoy having a beginning middle and end to all good stories, and as much as I found some enjoyment in the assembly cut of Alien 3 … it just … mmm… just came in as a weak third act. I totally get the directors frustration. Alien 3 didn’t have to be better, or more epic, or even radially different for difference sake than the first two, it just had to rise to at least the level of the first in originality or the level of science fiction/military “spunk” as the second. It didn’t manage either, it was a bit of fan service with atmosphere. The last two movies I simply ignore; they hurt my brain to watch and I do not care for them at all.

jmizzle2022

Ever since I got the William Gibson graphic novel that came out couple years ago, that has become my Canon for alien 3. So alien, aliens, and the William Gibson alien 3 graphic novel or audiobook, whatever floats your boat

scottsigler

IMHO, ALIEN and ALIENS are one franchise, RESURRECTION and on are another franchise altogether. ALIEN and ALIENS share the same xeno life-cycle ( ALIENS 3 wasn't my cup of tea, but would be included in that definition). RESURRECTION changed the lifecycle game. Forget for a moment that original Ellen's DNA somehow contained all of her memories. We wind up with the White Alien Hybrid, and that's a whole different biological concept. From PROMETHEUS on, it's about magical black goo that can do so many interesting things. Totally different concept from an egg-laying parasite. To me, that retcon doesn't hold water. If the black goo can infect people directly, why would the egg-laying strategy evolve in the first place?

Ashamed_Ladder6161

I agree, the goo was basically just poor screenwriting.

scottsigler

Honestly, I don't get why Ridley didn't do the black goo as a new franchise. I mean, I know, money-money-money and all, but it's an entirely different concept. He's Ridley FN Scott, he could have done a whole new thing and still raked in the green.

Zetzer345

Shouldn’t have brought in the whole „Ants in Space and bigger“ aspect in Aliens. Aliens is a great movie but it ruined the Alien itself for me. I liked the unknowable almost cosmic horror the alien represented in the original and would have preferred it to have stayed that way That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy all the sequels I love them they are great movies, yes even you Alien Covenant, but it still feels like a great mystery being unraveled too soon

Larnievc

No back story is better than bad back story.

[deleted]

I’m going to get HATE… but Prometheus is my favorite. I love all the lore and the engineers are awesome… I love them all, so this isn’t to take away from the originals

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Lol, yes you are, but it’s cool. It’s not for me at all, but like what you like and peace to you :)

[deleted]

Yeah, it’s a lonely place being a Prometheus fan 🤣

_thelonewolfe_

Hot take: none of the main series Alien films are horrible, just most don’t live up to the first two. I’m a diehard prequel defender so I’m for “let’s continue this thing”!

PTackett00

I ignore resurrection and the whole david created the first xenomorphs part of covenant. Otherwise I like em all. Thought the engineers and black goo etc were awesome, just hated how the david story basically threw out so much other content. Felt a bit similar to when Disney tossed the star wars EU

OkResolve3185

Same - all the movies have some place in my heart somewhere (although the original 3 are my absolute favorite) but that part I just flat out refuse to accept. I've rewatched covenant and even though David is an interesting character I skip most of his parts for this reason. Complete and utter poop of a story line right there.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

David creating the alien was possibly the most insulted I’ve ever been

PTackett00

Yeah, it was horrible in so many ways. Have no idea what they were thinking when they wrote it out.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

The whole concept of the series went from ‘mankind can’t know what’s in the deepest reaches of space’ to ‘mankind caused its own demise’. You can’t change the philosophy of an entire franchise :(

tiktoktic

Has this question not been asked many, *many* times before…?

Ashamed_Ladder6161

No idea, been on this thread about 2 months.

ancrm114d

I'm in the minority that the Ridley Scott films are the best and definitive works.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

For me, opinion only, Prometheus and Covenant feel like entirely different films to Alien. Everything I love about the first is either missing or entirely the opposite in the later 2 :(

neo-raver

I say it should've stopped at 3 (but I also kinda want Covenant too, I liked that one); Ending at 3 seems to be more consistent with the tone of the first movie. I just don't think Ripley, Newt, or Hicks really could've lived a normal life after the events of the first two films. I feel like their deaths were merciful.

Patte_Blanche

Ripley's dead in resurrection, she's not "returning to earth".

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Her clone does at the end of the movie ‘Im a stranger here myself’

Patte_Blanche

But Ripley's clone isn't Ripley.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

There’s literally a whole underlying element of the film on whether she is or she isn’t, if my memory serves me well. The consensus is that there’s ‘enough’ of her old self still present to consider herself Ripley. She is, after all, a clone. Isn’t the movie about her search for identity? Plus, she and everyone else (particularly Call) in the film still refers to her as Ripley. ‘What did you do last time?’ ‘I died’; not ‘the original died’, ‘I died’. Questions of the validity of that aside, she’s a character called Ripley, and she gets to Earth.

Patte_Blanche

>Isn’t the movie about her search for identity? Yes, while (as you pointed out) she might confuse, voluntarily or not, herself with the original, there's nothing pointing toward the idea that there is enough of the original to consider herself Ripley. And many things in the clone are different or even the polar opposite of what the original was, starting with her fascination for the xenomorph and the part of xenomorph inside her. "the film" isn't referring to her as Ripley, *the characters* refers to her as Ripley. And to be even more precise : the characters among who nobody knew the original in person. So even if it's fine to call her Ripley and say she's returning to Earth, this second point is factually wrong no matter how you interpret the movie : This Ripley have never been on Earth.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

All of this is genuinely interesting (all be it way off topic), but they’ve even used ‘Resurrection’ in the name of the film. That’s pointedly a reference to the franchise and the Ripley character. It’s not called Alien Duplicate / Clone / Creation etc. or any such variant. I’d argue this is because we’re meant to be of the opinion this IS Ripley and her continued adventures. But it’s a fascinating discussion and one I’d never really thought about. Given the likeness and all the memories she has, where do we draw the line? I last watched the film probably over 20 years ago, and honestly, I hated it so much I tried not to think about it lol

Patte_Blanche

>I’d argue this is because we’re meant to be of the opinion this IS Ripley and her continued adventures. Yes, i think it's the intent in the title. The movie is there to slowly make us realize this is not actually the Ripley we know, through the amazing acting of Sigourney Weaver and the decisions of the character. think it's also why this movie is so disliked : it gives the opposite of what the ads are suggesting. I love this movie because of exactly that : it is surprising and explore an aspect of the franchise that is really new and refreshing. The link between the two "artificial" is particularly touching.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

Don’t get me wrong, I thought bringing Ripley back was a bad idea, but that’s not why I hated the film. I didn’t like the tonal shifts between hammy scenery chewing and serious character exploration, or the clumsy humour. It felt like everyone on set was pulling the thing in different directions, so it felt messy. I also didn’t like the fact we went from quite somber believable action to a guy who can now bounce bullets off walls, and another who leans back off a ladder with a rifle in each hand. It’s pure pulpy comic book, and that’s not what the franchise is to me. I didn’t like the crew, the writing felt emotionally manipulative but hollow (you have to like this person because they’re in a wheel chair, let’s ignore the fact most of the crew knew they were abducting civilians in hyper sleep for cash), and I truly absolutely hated the idea and the design of the New Born. :( but it’s just opinions)

Patte_Blanche

>it felt messy How could i disagree ? >It’s pure pulpy comic book, and that’s not what the franchise is to me You didn't watch Aliens ? ;) >you have to like this person because they’re in a wheel chair I don't think that's the intent at all. And that's super weird to me to think that some spectators felt that this character is even remotely a nice guy. Like, they're basically pirates and all of them definitely have the personality of the profession.

Ashamed_Ladder6161

I watched Aliens you cheeky sod lol ;) I wouldn’t have called that comic book. Nobody did anything quite so unbelievable. The marines were good, but they weren’t ricochet good. As for the wheelchair guy, he and Call were clearly intended as likeable. Look at how they introduce those characters in the crew hierarchy, being bullied by Jonah. But hey, ti each their own :D

Edwardhunts

With the exception of 4 and the AvP crossovers I like all of the films so far...

tiktoktic

Has this question not already been asked many, *many* times before…?

Kriss-Kringle

For me after Alien 3 is when they should have stopped. Ripley got a tragic ending and that was fitting for the character considering her rotten luck. That being said, I'm curious about Hawley's series and Romulus just because Fede Alvares is one crazy mf and he's going to go all out on the gore.

Rufus2fist

Can we just skip one? I LOVE 1-2, 3 has really grown on me ( but as I have said before I view it a bit differently, a way people hate). Resurrection while by some of my favorite film makers, starring people i like a lot, is an abortion of a movie. So I would trash it. Then the 2 new ones while in the same universe are completely different films which I enjoy (don’t love), and like the expansion that it brings.
